Not always killing them. They'd mess with the memory of those who were less expandable like other marines and sisters. They'd also do it to expendable dudes who'd proven their worth. Like if Creed were to battle alongside them, he'd probably be mindwiped. Then his troops would be mindwiped/liquidated as needed.

many years ago...like 3 or so maybe when I was but a grognard and dawn of war 2 had JUUUUUUSSST come out there was a thread by a concept artwork dude who worked for the company of the game.

he was taking requests.

I clearly recall the requests he undertook.

An inquisitor in IG dress.

A space wolf assault marine.

An imperial guardsman with a boinic arm

and a deamonette he did a few more I think but I remember this because the imperial guardsman was my request.

I will platonically love the anon or trip fag who would post that guardsman because my computer AND emergency flash drive died taking the only copy of my guardsman request that I have to the great recycle bin in the sky

>> No.20082990

i mean, i have a few, but the 40k universe doesn't often give the spotlight to joe guardsman, who took out a chaos champion with a lucky lasburst or bayonet placement. there's a few examples of this in DH (and OW is fucking rife with them, which is why i'm really sad i have no friends who i can play any tabletop game at all, much less OW with)...but it makes me sad. Millions of guardsmen die daily in the 40k canon...at least a few of them must have fucking badass stories

i already have this pic, but yes, you're correct, it's astonishing that this dude is using his 40akog to actually...you know...aim. This is the shit i wanna see...because i can only assume that the Imperium has survived because of the relative competency of guardsmen like this for 10,000 years

See, I'd like to see smart guardsmen. Crazy, zealous, yes.
But smart.
Smart as in, "Lets set up a proper L shaped ambush with armor support so we can pulp these Chaos fucks" kind of smart.
Oh, and arty.

>> No.20083089

but that's part of what i'm saying...i wanna see guardsmen with heavy bolter emplacements anchoring kill zones while they advance under suppression fire...not the fucking "1941 soviet army blood-charge" shit that we see constantly. If the Imperium has survived, it's survived on guard regiments realizing they have to use tactics to win wars...basically I wanna see Band of Brothers or The Pacific...but with guardsmen (admittedly their opponents might be any amount of nightmarish constructs, but that ain't nothing tactical application of fire can't bring down)

I'm just tired of the guard being mooks in artfluff...even if it might be true if the MUHREENS are around

>> No.20083090

I mostly chose this one because its A. a single guy B. Not a DEATH AND GLORY CHARGE IN GRIMDARK but something mellow C. I like it.
I sympathize, mostly because the /k/ommando in me wants a lasgun. Fuck the ATF!
Its the Imperial Guard. Thats part of the shell cratered, trench strewn hellhole of a territory you just inherited.

Sir you can never have enough Artillery. In my IG army, there are 9 earthshakers, and 4 quad guns.

Yes. 9.

>> No.20083174

i just want to see the "underdog" humans triumphing in a universe that is inherently inimical to their continued survival. I know 5ed rules were pretty damn kind to the guard (lolplasmalawnmowerspam)...but, fluff-wise, i can't help but see a force that has to adopt the best tactical practices to fight off the countless hordes and maintain the vestiges of a once-proud human empire

>> No.20083193

Not to argue with taste or anything, but the Marines from Halo are similar, with more of a tactical emphasis.

>> No.20083248

I don't disagree...in fact, the mini live-action movie they made for ODST is still one of my favorites. Even if it's cheesy, i still can't get over humanity fighting a technologically/physiologically superior enemy due to our willpower and elan. Humanity Fuck Yea is often overrated, but in 40k threads, I honestly think people underplay it
THIS is how Stormtroopers should be portrayed!

>> No.20083252

Earth shaker carriages are so hard to remove in 6th edition, funny how one of the worst units in the IG/DKoK army list became one of their best.

>> No.20083267

I've always preferred infantry armies. There's something inherently ballsy about normal(although meaner than usual) men and women reducing alien monsters, superhuman mutants and tanks and robots into swiss cheese and tomato sauce. In 1500 point I field 3 platoons, each with 4 squads, command and a lascannon support squad. I don't like tanks as much as infantry so I field none.

Besides, I'm infantry trained myself so I'm biased...

The last time i actually played tabletop was 4ed, during the guard doctrines. I ran drop troops (my fluff was that my regiment was seconded to the Imperial Navy as garrison troops, and only deployed during initial landings, like the USMC [the last 4 generations of my family have been USMC])...so, against MEQ armies i shredded due to the prevalence of plasma and meltas in my army...and my ungodly good luck with scatter and plas overheat rolls...
but this is what i'm really getting at. I want to see fluff more like the Halo ODSTs than what we see now for the IG. I want to see tactics, flanking, suppression fire, cover and advance, dynamic entry. The guard, if anything, shouldnt've regressed from modern forces. I just want to see images of them being a competent fighting force as opposed to the background blood sacks to ward's continual marine wank...and that's why I like the ODST stuff. The Halo universe has its flaws, but at least it portrays the human units as capable and tactically knowledgeable...especially the ODST people (plus, ODST armor was badass)

>its not like a whole lot of knowledge could be lost in 40,000 years.
yes, but especially with the new "toys" the humans are up against, just as many things could be gained. The Administratum is obviously far too vast an organization to effectively disseminate this information, but for particular armies, one would expect that they'd transfer tactical know-how on how to fight their assigned enemies. With the exception of glory-hungry/bloodthirsty generals, it'd stand to reason that any guard unit would be relatively indoctrinated in "best practices" against their chosen enemy after about 6 months in-sector. Any unit that had survived multiple encounters of this kind would be the same kind of unit portrayed in the ODST trailer...a sort of "we may be shitty humans, but our tactics and 'fighting spirit (loljapan) will defeat you)'"

regardless of tabletop realities, I want to see fluff written/drawn with these considerations in mind

Inquisitor Lawrence, an unassuming man, save for his odd grey hair at the age of 23, addresses his guardsmen: "You three. Your commanders recommended you as relatively resistant to the...shall we say...oddities of the warp. This is fine by me. Bitch all you want about your transfers later, just remember that you receive double pay while under Inquisitorial Mandate, and my hearing isn't that good so long as anyone doesn't ask me any difficult questions. Now then, this emperor-damned world has some sort of economic destabilization-cult under way...how do you guardsmen think we should deal with it?"
>economic negotiation (get the inquisiton to grant additional worker's rights to this world)
>military negotiation (get the administatum to come and buttfuck this world for being "rebelliouis" (this could result in both positives and negatives for the imperium)
>social negotiation: (get drunk and party with bitches...your militarily jaded souls have no idea what this option will bring for this world)

Guardsman Nerrik, the Inquisitor "kindly" directs you to his orders circa M41.999.4chanpost20084028. Strangely enough for your guardsman ethos, Lawrence seems to be a relatively forgiving sort of man, and merely laughs at your comments about beauty seen versus imagined: "Nerrik, I too once thought in these avenues! I cannot say more, merely that the emperor moves in stranger ways than you may comprehend with your current knowledge"

Out of quest: i haven't the vaguest idea what would be the roll for a character to gain knowledge of his boss from this encounter.../tg/, any ideas? I'm thinking 65+ on a d100

Also, Inquisitor Lawrence hears some scuttlebutt about summoning the Kriegers on this relatively compliant Imperial World, and deigns to pull said guardsman aside (please give yourself something of a name, if only for my ease).
"Guardsman, you must not understand the true value of the Imperium. No matter your jokes and jests about the ineffectiveness of the standard weapons of the Administratum, you must always face the foes of Humanity with a smile!...*silence*I can see it in your eyes, guardsman...you want to say something...didn't I say free speech was part and parcel of my retinue?!
