Nope, since 40k story doesn't move forward

As far as I know, it's just another one of those things that Games Workshop leaves intentionally ambiguous to give the universe that sense of being large and mysterious.

no, there are four

Chaos, C'tan, Eldar, Rebel

and only three of those make sense. (Chaos, Eldar, Rebel)

He runs around in bright red armour, with seven buddies (for a total of eight), has a focus on martial skill and "blood bonds"

Or, you know, Anaris, the Dawnlight, the mythical Eldar sword?

Farsight wields the Dawnblade, which looks suspiciously like a wraithsword

HMMM

He's called that because before he got all hormonal and flipped off the Ethereals he was renowned for being able to plan and predict his opponent's manoeuvrings months in advance.

What ever it is that made him turn we know its probably not Chaos, I mean seriously how many chaos adherents don't have spikes/skulls/insanity/excessive genitals? Considering the timespan he's been under chaotic influence he should be a lot nastier crunch-wise and spike-wise.

The C'Tan idea only worked before 'crons got a Ward in the bollocks. And even then the implication was that the Ethereal's were C'Tan pawns, not the other way round.

Eldar is somewhat plausible, smells Eldrad no? But being psychic blanks means mind control is probably not the case, so maybe Eldrad just had some tea and biscuits with O'Shovah and popped the question about whether the Space Popes were pricks or not?

Rebelling against Ethereal mindcontrol seems the strongest case. Ethereals evolution is blatantly intelligent design to fuck with the Tau race. Not to mention the 4th edition codex is constantly hinting at the Tau Empire being obsessed with Fascist/Communist social control methods like death camps, sterlization yada yada. So maybe the Ethereals are not Tau, but some other race that moved in an said why not let these bitches scratch our backs and commit suicide for pre-dinner entertainment? Farsight pretty much saw that Ethereals are the dicks that every other species can see them for.

There is no flaw in a doctrine that preaches unity, peace, and compassion.

It is certainly a better Ideology than the vile nonsense which is the Imperil Creed.

Anyways, back to Farsight. Farsight's desertion has caused a schism in Tau society. A wave of uncertainty and doubt washed over the Tau Empire. It could have signaled the return of the Mont'au. Thanks to the swift action of Shadowsun and the Ethereals this uncertainty was lessened if not extinguished.

Farsight threatened to unleash the Great Terror upon the Tau. By his defiance and hubris he hurt the Tau more than their enemies ever could.

In my eyes, Farsight is villain and heartless monster.

Quite a few? Of note is his aggressive tactics, EIGHT suit bodyguard (sacred number of KHORNE) and a free bonding knife for every squad leader (you know, a blood ritual between comrades in arms)

>The C'Tan idea only worked before 'crons got a Ward in the bollocks.
it never really worked. It was just a result of the ridiculous C'TAN DID EVERYTHING mindset that pervaded the fluff of the time. There was NO support for the idea beyond "Arthas Moloch is a dead world that was inhabited by chaos at one point but had pre-human civilization even before that"

There is a book, Xenology, which is of debated canon, who's strong implication is that the Eldar foresaw the Tyranid invasion, abducted some Tau, genetically engineered them so that they have a pheromone emitting organ that the Eldar took out of a queen of a xenos hive species, and reintroduced them into Tau society, explaining the mysteriously sudden arrival of the Ethereal caste, uniting the previously unimportant Tau into a society that rapidly became a interstellar empire capable of tar-pitting a good number of Tyranids. Farsight's isolated expeditionary forces, when their Ethereal was killed and there was no replacement, were freed of the control of the pheromones, realized how the Ethereal controlled the Tau, and established an independent enclave in preparation for an anti-Ethereal rebellion.
Again, the canon status of Xenology is in question, but I love it, because manipulating a benign and unimportant intelligent species into a chemically controlled collectivist dictatorship forced into an unwinnable war with an extra-galactic threat just to buy a little more time to think of a plan is the kind of hilariously dickish move the Eldar do at their best.

After the end of M40, the segmentum was split into two sides, East and West. This marked the beginning of the era known as the Damocles Crusade. The Ethereals dispatched one of their hardened commandos, codename Farsight, to dismantle the Imperium's machines of war. At the end of operation Kroot Eater, the Aun, Farsight's mentor, was killed in action.

This act led Farsight to break away from the Tau Empire, and form his own enclave, free from the oppression of those who would seek to use Farsight to further their own gains. This is the story of the Enclave.
