17685204 No.17685204 [Reply] [Original] [4plebs] [archived.moe]

So, how about a BattleFleet Gothic general thread? Ships fightan, explodan, firin broadside-an?

>> No.17685328

Battlefleet Gothic is always cool.

My Rogue Traders have hired on to try and defend a backwater frontier system from a small tyranid splinter fleet. I'm thinking about trying to scrape together stuff for us to play out the system defense in BFG, but not certain they'd be able to pick it up fast enough for it to be worth while.
(They also aren't in charge of the defense themselves, just contributing to it.)

>> No.17685406

Most ships a Roguetrader has acces to (Frigates and Raiders) are very fragile in BFG. Unless your Dynastie comands a rather impressive ship they could get blown to tiny bits by some stray shot if you use BFG. You should keep that in mind before throwing them into some massive space battle. One of the supplements for Roguetrader has mass-ship combat rules, but I dont know if they are any good.

>> No.17685474

I know. They do have a little starfort they can use to ride it out, and their primary ship, while fragile, is, unbeknownst to them, fostering a rather developed Genestealer cult. Essentially, they are unlikely to fully ride out the battle on their frigate anyway.

They've also been somewhat unsuccessful in terms of rallying support; they probably aren't going to smash the fleet in space.

>> No.17685517

Ouch. Things sound bad for Team Rogue Trader! Nids AND not having enough support for the space battle? Could be rough. What ship do they have?

>> No.17685619

Small frigate, or large raider, I think. The party themselves are kind of oriented towards personal combat rather than starship; I figure tying them up fighting on the ground would be more their thing.

Any advice on what they ought to face in a small splinter fleet? I'm assume one hive ship and a few of each of the lighter classes.

What they'll have is 1-3 cruisers, a quartet of frigates, two raiders, other than their own, possibly a dauntless-class LC (Or trading one of the potential cruisers for one or two Dauntlesses).

And their mini-ramillies that for unrelated reasons is controlled by an AI which may be plotting to kill them all. Long story.

At any rate, I think it'd be fun as hell to let them play out control of a few ships or squadrons in the overall battle, and then fall back to the planet as the spores start falling. Not sure whether they'd want to learn a new system to run the battle, though, or whether they really want to see escorts like their own drop like flies.

>> No.17685644

Hrm... for something like that, you may want to just use RT for the battle, but the BFG Vassal module for the showing of ships and movement and such. I've only had a little experience with RT ship combat, but once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy and fun, especially if you don't add in some of the more complicated things like landing bays for fighters and nova cannons and torps. Not that those aren't good, just that they take more time to get used to and learn.

Own about 13K of Chaos. Biggest game ever was 25K a side over a weekend.

>> No.17685758

Bubbles of command around admirals.

The three blackstones were nasty, the only thing that pulled it back after the opening Nova cannon barrage.

>> No.17685768

Usually play battles that from what I understand are abit larger then average (1700-2000) simply becouse we always consider bigger matches to be better (same with btech).
Gotta love my chaos fleet, Pair of murders, pair of slaughters, pair of Hades lead by a despoiler and whatever else I feel like throwing in there for good measure. Has worked good so far, that many range 60 lances who lock on really put out a world of hurt.
Praise papa Nurgle!

I'm desperately wanting a play by play narration of this all of a sudden. It sounds pretty damn epic.

BFG: Where necrons still have FTL drives.

Does anyone have homebrewed rules to represent newcrons? I know they have fighters now.

>> No.17685863

I don't remember much.
It opened up with a barrage of nova cannon shots and a tidal wave of torpedoes. Several cruisers squadrons obliterated.
Amongst the return fire a blackstone hit an Emperor Class Battleship. Its warpdrive imploded and took out an enormous chunk of the Imperial fleet.
As the game ended the amount of attack craft the chaos fleet was chucking out was starting to tell.

No-one who likes BFG wants to play as or against Necrons. they break the game and make it dull.

>> No.17685893

Well, provided the player isn't being a complete asshole (straferun, then run away forever and win on killpoints), Necrons can be pretty fun to fight.

Just don't let them be played by someone who will choose victory over fun.

>> No.17685904

I was the first member of the public who wasn't a playtester to play it. Was at Nottingham HQ when the first starter box came off the line. Helped the red shirts put it together, and played the first game all of us reading the rules together.

Was never really into though.

>> No.17685911

It depends. Are you playing a friendly game where whoever destroys the most shit wins? Then yeah, the crons are not very fun and will probably win most of the time. Are you playing with the VP rules? If that's the case, most 1500-2000 point games will be lost to the Crons if even one cruiser is destroyed, as Cron ships are worth like, triple victory points.

Rogue Trader GM here.
My party has a raider and a frigate under their command.
Think they can take on a heavily armed cruiser?

Rogue Trader GM from first response here; what is the opening stage of a Tyranid Hivefleet arriving at a system with defenders? They don't travel through the warp, right? They just come out of deepspace at relativistic speeds or something? Below or above the ecliptic, or in line with it? And, presumably, making a beeline for any genestealer cults or edible worlds?

A Sword Frigate with Mars Macro and Starbraker Lance with a crewskill of 40.
And a Meritech Shrike Raider as their flagship (Voidmaster got 50 in ballistic) with Best Titanforge Lance and Best Ryza Pattern Plasma Battery.
The raider got clan-kin and death cult, so they don't start losing morale unless it does over 3 in morale damage.
Those two ship don't got a handy sheet like that.

Running low on ammo and severely damaged maybe. Taking on a capital ship with a pair of moving targets just isn't a good idea.

Then again my group was crazy enough to take on battleships, but we had our Grand Cruiser(archeo and xeno tech everywhere) and 5 frigates to do the job. 2 of our escorts still got hulked, but we did kill it and get paid by the commander for our troubles.

>> No.17686186

Well, the Trader did kill off one of the scion to a hostile dynasty and steal their frigate.

In 40k, logic was abandoned somewhere around 20M, I think.

>> No.17686208

They CAN win, but the enemy is built decently (and can use NPC orders), and it will cost them hardcore. Their main problem is that the players are using Lances, when Weapon Batteries are superior, and they lack the BS to take full advantage of them otherwise.

Overall, I would actually say betting odds are 65-35 in the cruiser's favor.

>> No.17686271

Sounds like good odds to me.

Our idea of space combat is a lot like super sonic jets with crossbows as the main armament.

The ships are considerably faster than the weapons being deployed against them so logic doesnt come into it too much.

Id be surprised if space bombers were manned though. Its not like they would have complicated orders.

But as you said, logic is abandoned in this setting.

Atlest imperial bombers are manned.
By ancient decree: "If man can't do it, then it shouldn't be done"
That is why macro-cannons are usually manually loaded by crew and not machines.
It doesn't explain everything, but atlest something.

Not so much that, more that it is tech-heresy to make a machine with any real degree of agency, due to the AI rebellion back in the DAoT. So creating an intelligent spaceship and tasking it to blow people up rather raises the spectre of the last time the robot armies turned on mankind.

Things like Imperial ships being reloaded by hand are usually down to tech degredation, where they've forgotten quite how to interface the loaders with the ship's systems, or the forgeworld that used to have the schematics for Vitally Important Cog 17b got tyranid'd and now nobody in the sector knows how to fabricate one.

Just smart enough to do jobs humans are unsuitable for and act as a seriously beefy antivirus when the likes of Eldar or Necrons are trying to hack Imperial machinery to take it over. Strong as an Ox, loyal as a puppy and eats up Eldar programming for breakfast.

Mans last great feat after the end of the golden age.

Of course only very the most senior ranks on Mars are fully aware of the machine spirits true nature.

A CSM battle barge? Never thought of the fact that they probably also got a few of their own.

Would also work for a privateer Rogue Trader.

Right, round 1 is over.
The Imperial started off by wining the initative and fired ALL the torpedoes.
Sadly, the Chaos managed to dodge the blow during their advance and managed to get a single hit with a macrocannon. In other words, they have been throwing heavy worded insults at each other.

Round 2 over.
The Imperial started by having the escorts wipe out one of the chaos escorts and the Lunar cruiser killed off a second one.

And then came the Slaughter.
Coming abroad on the Lunar, it unleashed a hell.
Four hits with it's marco cannons, ripping the shield and causing a sever fire inside the Lunar.
And then it struck with it's lances.
The Lunar is still holding on in there and ignores the petty fire from the last Chaos escort.

Luckily, the cruiser captain manage to get the fire under control as we move in for round 3

Round 3
Starts with the Cruiser locking on and getting its broadside to the chaos Slaughter and fire off a salvo.
It only manages to bring down the shield, but the escorts size the opportunity and scores a cirt, breaching the hull of the large floating Chaos shrine.

With the loss of escorts and the damaged cruiser, the Chaos forces retreats back into the warp and lick their wounds.
A glorious victory for the Imperial Navy.
(The chaos player had to leave)

Whats bigger, a star wars ship or a 40k one?
Not trolling just wondering....

>> No.17690174

I think 40k ones are bigger, though starwars ships have more zeroes for their reactors/weapons/shields/what have you, and make about as much sense as the 40k ones.

If I recall from those heady days of my Star Wars nerd youth, an Imperial-class Star Destroyer is just just under or over a kilometer long, and an SSD is seventeen klicks. In BFG, a frigate is usually just under a kilometer, and a battleship can be up to seven klicks.

Also you can easily convert the Vassal tokens into printable ships of your own.

Just use print screen to capture the images, print, back them with cardstock, and glue to an appropriate sized base. Makes for a cheap and very portable alternative to miniatures.
