Can someone give me a biology lesson on orks?

So apparently they breed via spores, does that mean there are little baby orks growing off of trees throughout the galaxy?

Do orks need to eat? Do they need to sleep? I've heard that ork blood is suppose to be green?

ORKS - a humanoid fungus race. Orks reproduce by shedding spores in the same way that humans shed dead skin. the spores settle into the ground and grow, eventually bursting forth as orks. Orks grow through exercise, mostly combat. As an ork fights and gets older, his skin gets tougher and his muscles get thicker. If he survives long enough he can grow to be warboss sized.

The spores only settle in dead organic matter. So you'll get them growing in the ground. Also, they grow in earthy wombs for a while before popping out fully ready for combat.

They generally tend to fall into medical or technical professions for the orks, where they use their latent psychic powers to make their terrible science work. The Orks were made by the Old Ones.

You see, the Old Ones were at war with the Necrons.

And the Old Ones made the Eldar as the ultimate Necron weapon.

Anyway, the key to the strength of the Orks is that the Old Ones engineered the Orks with an genetic encyclopedia.

Orks genetically predestined to take on a role, take that role. This all works unknown to the Ork of course.

He doesn't know he's making a plasma cannon, he just thinks this part belongs here, and that part belongs there.

This genetic encyclopedia hasn't changed, but Ork Kultur adds all kinds of things to the "Orkish way" that actually don't mean shit, like faith.

Red won't make Orkish vehicles go faster. Red vehicles are simply better liked by Mekboys. And when something is better liked, it gets better service. Voila, it runs faster.

The Ork is a walking paradox. It is both one of the most retarded civilisations in the galaxy, as well as one of the most advanced civilisations.

After all, Orks make the best teleporters. (Only surpassed by the Necrons, but the Necrons cheat.)

Anzion identified that the Orkoid DNA strand possesses a remarkable tertiary helix: an algal strip of coding that remains consistent regardless of the species in question. My team have since expanded upon Anzion’s proposals and discovered a phenomenon more startling yet, which I call the ‘Taeltis Process of Embryonic Selection’. As you’re no doubt aware, a healthy Orkoid spore that falls in a viable location (dark, moist and sheltered) quickly plants taproots and forms a subterranean sac of algal sap for the developing organism that provides nutrients. Nah - mushrooms. When an Orkoid spore settles in dark, damp environments it quickly takes root and an orkoid creature begins to gestate below ground. The fewer orkoid creatures there already are in an area, the more likely it is the creature will be something like a squig or a grot, to ensure that when the Orks do start emerging, there's already enough squigs and grots around so there's a ready supply of food and servants to get a proper Ork society up and running.

Yup. Orks live off a diet of meat, fungus, and strong alcohol, though they'll eat whatever they can get in lean times.

IIRC it was green in 2nd ed, and retconned to red in 3rd ed. It's spelled out in an FAQ that appeared in WD back in the day when the 3rd edition Codex: Orks appeared. Part of the reason for the retcon was to allow people to model and paint wounded orks with visible blood splatter.
