I'm actually trying to think of a decent backstory on why a scum would be recruited into a group of acolytes.

After all he's just lowly scum, he's not a gang lord or desperado (yet).
The highlight of his life so far is that an Inquisitor even so much as looked at him.

Specifically, a pocketchrono belonging to some administrator we got information from with earlier, a dagger with some crazy inscription on it (I don't really remember what its deal was, and wasn't motivated in character to ask - I was the guardsman and the psyker snapped up that fukken knife quick), a promethium can, a skull, a letter, and possibly some other stuff, it's been a while.

2) Psyker and Adept healed them with psykermagicks and medicae skill.

i always thought of it as this

a group of acolytes goes to a planet to investigate something or other, so they themselves find and recruit/hire extra help. The scum doesn't ask many questions and knows alot about the planetary goings on that some others might not know and is more accessible to the party than high ranking gang lords.

not to mention that scum does not necessarily mean that you are some back alley gutter rat mugging passers by. you could be any social class, including noble, just committing some kind of professional crime, counterfeiting, racketeering, gambling etc..

Apocalypse-Now mission. We were to travel upriver on a Jungle World to find a Commisar. Reports were he was being a bit 'odd'. We were to meet with him and determine if he was fit for command.

Eventually we get there to find Orks have ruined the place, slaughtered the Imperials and crucified the Commisar.

A firefight ensues while the Scum and the Cleric (me) get him off the cross and start to retreat. He was still alive at this point - he'd just been tied to the cross rather than nailed.

As we start hobbling off with the Commisar to afety the rest of the group do a good job gunning down the Orks. There is one left, and he is wounded. Here's where it goes a bit awry.

The Guardsman shouts I'LL GET HIM and primes a grenade. Throws. Rolls bad. GM makes it scatter. Lands right at our feat. Guardsman rolls max damage.

Commisar died. I KO'd (only survived because of the 'half all crit damage' Talent). Always glared at the Guardsman ever since.

I've got an interesting group, to say the least. We rarely get through a mission without threatening to shoot each other at least twice.

- A Hive World Scum (me) that has adopted the vocal mannerisms of a Planar on Sigil.
- A Forge World Tech-Priest who acts like a condescending dick to everyone but the Scum. Will occasionally do awesome shit like beat a daemonhost to death with a servo-arm.
- An Imperial World Guardsman who went through Commissariat training who hates Arbites after a Judge challenged his authority outside of war. Has a conscript we've dubbed "Radio" because all he does is carry the voxcaster.
- A Void Born Psyker, given a brevet/non-existent rank of Sergeant by the Guardsman. He's earned the ire of the Tech-Priest MANY times because of his early overuse of Weapon Jinx.
- A Hive World Arbitrator who is the only Acolyte to understand how fucked up and borderline heretical his teammates and Inquisitor are.

The picture? That's probably going to be our new enemy when they learn about our Guardsman's anointed bolter he bought from the Haarlock estate with the Tech-Priest's modifications (inspirational carvings and generally cleaning the whole thing to make it more efficient).

Our assassin who is a crazed druggie swapped bodies with me due to a perils roll and was pissed at me so she shot me in the back of the leg. As I'm hobbling away I try to cast distort vision to throw her off my track. Roll phenomena. Ok Roll perils. crap. Rolled Daemon Host. WTF?!

To put in in perspective each character only has around rank 2-3 on their tree. They were fighting an easy boss and cause the druggie had to have a sissy fit the party now has to fight a mid-to high level boss.

SPOILER: In the end, when we got the Titan moving and the Greater Daemon started his shit on the roof, everyone but me was out of order due to fatigue or fear and I was down to 0 fucking wounds. I survived 4 rounds of a fucking Lord of Changes full attention and destroyed the fucker with my shotcannon while on top of a moving Imperator-Class Titan. Thank you Sin-Scarred, having a Toughness Bonus of 10 on top of my 6 Armor definitely helped.

>three pronged attack with two bros at ground floor, sniper waiting on the roof, and me ziplining down onto chimera
>fall, spiky bit through my leg
>get back up, try to knock cultist into horde of something like fifty other cultists
>fall down again, spiky bit again
>teammate kills cultist on top of chimera, I rip the mounted heavy bolter straight from the metal, taking an armored plate with it
>gun down a daemonhost that's popped out of the chimera in two rounds, take out about 20 more cultists in the horde with it before we're all done
And that's how I got to rank 4 in dark heresy

I occassionally post the shenanigans my group gets together in my own threads, but I dont have enough material for that now so, summary of last weeks short session.

>Inquisitor gets captured by a Dark Eldar kabal when sacrificing herself to save the rest of the group. She gets Haemonculus'd into an Eldar. Billions of insanity points and suicide attempts later, she decides to find a cure instead. The rest of the group thinks she's dead.
>After the Dark Eldar raid, the rest of the group does not trust the RT, whom ORDERED the Arbites Judge to conduct an investigation on the Inquisitors Cadre the Judge was part of. They are now planning a mutiny together with his ships AdMech crew if he pulls more stupid shit.
>Seneschal is still zipping about the system in a Guncutter trying to cause a portal to Commoragh spontaneously exist.

>Take advances, buy gear, introduce chars to eachother.
>Two guardsmen, a sniper and a grenadier
>A 'healbot' techpriest
>A psyker by the name of 'Them bones'
>Last but not least an Arbitrator built like old Blue Eyes
>Inquisitor has us locked in a large room with dim lighting
>"From a door opposite where you entered you hear a loud crash"
>"Next thing you know the door is blown off its hinges and a cybernetic-ogryn monstrosity charges in."
>... NOPE...
>Grenadier hits it in the face with a krak grenade.
>Ogryn has no more face and collapses
>Old blue eyes walks over to the corpse and rubs the butt of his lho stick on it before getting out a new one.
>"He must have..."
>"Seen that one coming..."

After this we got dumped at an astronomic array where all the techpriests had gone mad and killed each other.
We full right then and there CSI. It might be the start of a great yet odd season. >.>

Oh wow, that reminds me of something a cleric in my group did once.
>Daemon ritual is commensing right infront of them, sucking up all spilled blood in the area from a hundred sacrificed Clerics placed in an unholy symbol, into a writhing moaning ball of blood and warpstuff
>Cleric decides he wants the blessing of a local warrior Saint in order to fight whatever comes out of the ritual, he's standing about 5m from it.
>Praying to this particular Saint usually involves drawing blood from yourself with your weapon to anoint it with the Emperors wrath. Cutting palms and fingers etc.
>Cleric cuts his palm with his sword and utters a prayer to the Saint and the Emperor. The blood instantly gets sucked into to the ritual, completing it. >Suddenly Daemonettes, daemonettes everywhere.
>clericsfw

He did manage to save the group from getting raped by the Daemonettes later in the session though.

>GMing Deathwatch
>First time I've GM'd it, so still getting used to it
>Party is a Space Shark Apothecary, a Storm Warden Techmarine, and a Dark Angel Tactical
>Investigating an Inquisitorial site that's gone dark, and everyone who's been sent hasn't returned
>Base is a wreck, decomposed bodies everywhere, some are skeletons. Most of them have the back of their skull broken into and brains are missing.
>Keep investigating, eerily quiet
>Find survivor hiding in an empty prison cell, living like a rat and treking out for supplies as needed. Our heroes caught him on his return.
>Scared, he fires his laspistol at the marines, doesn't even hit.
>Tactical marine doesn't have time for this shit, makes a called shot to the laspistol with his bolt pistol, man luckily only loses one finger.
>Space Shark notices something as the others talk
>Ohshit, did that wall just move? Shoot it!
>FUCK! SOMETHING IS INVISIBLE, IT BLEEDS!
>Party hunts down the invisible beast, and gets ambushed by it. Space Shark succeeds in resisting getting pulling in by fleshy hooks, and party opens fire, dealing decent damage
>They realize it's a Lictor
>Lictor runs into the forest to prepare for another attack, Space Shark won't play that game and charges it.
>Lictor gains initiative, launches a flurry of 4 attacks, 2 of which miss, one which the Space Shark parries with his fist (Homerule that one can parry with Unarmed Warrior, since you're counted as "armed"), but one hits
>Loses half his health and gets his helmet fucked up by a poisonous swipe of the talons.
>Techmarine makes a single shot into the fray, scores righteous fury, blows the Lictor's head off

THEN THEY RETRIEVED DATA FROM THE FACILITY, RESCUED THE LONE SURVIVOR, AND FLEW OFF ON THE THUNDERHAWK. IT WAS A GOOD DAY.

Like three times. Fucking Necrons and their nigh immortality. We also met our Rogue Trader PCs, and in our new Black Crusade game we killed off one of our Deathwatch characters. Our GM likes tying together our different campaigns.

I love doing that as GM also. The players love to see what their old characters are up to, and it usually isn't hard to tie them together. Even characters they didn't like, or ones they retired due to physical damage, are appreciated when they show up as an NPC.
