I'm not sure about this thread.

Would WH40K fan art be /tg/ related?
if so.

Post it, its manly as shit and the art style is ALWAYS good.

porn is acceptable too if need be.

Starting with Dark Eldar. Not sure what I'll move onto after that.

40K fanart is the kind of things that this board has in overwhelming abundance all the fucking time, so yeah, it's /tg/-related as fuck, obviously.

Also, worksafe board, porn is forbidden.

lurk moar, but I approve of this thread.

The Empire part - the Kroot, Vespid, and all the other little alien races they've absorbed or encountered - are rather interesting. The Tau themselves? Not so much, IMO.

Nah, you aren't. I like them too, at least in my own interpretation of them as a large warmachine, where common good is far above individual, though with some deviancy allowed, as long as it serves the common purposes.

For example, my cadre is more melee oriented than Tau typically are, in order to stay unorthodox, force the enemy to adapt to the different approaches of fighting, only to have the tactics shifted once again the next time they meet me.

I've not actually read it yet, it's just what I've heard about it - that the main character badmouths Abaddon the Despoiler to his face and survives, and then turns down personal offers of power from three of the Chaos Gods. It seems a little...sueish. And that's not a term I use lightly.

Remember him /tg/?

Well to be honest, he does say stuff to Abaddon's face, about how his BCs have failed to fulfill their ultimate goals, i.e. topple the Imperium, about how they've failed their fathers, and that corruption has set deep in, thus disabling them from true unity and the chance to win without trying to back-stab one another in the meantime. As for the visitation from the Ruinous Powers... it was more of.. how did Ruven describe it, a glimmer, a tiny drop of their attention directed on Talos that made him those offers. It's not as if the whole brunt of their attention and might converged on him and he laughed in their faces.

>> No.14883064

Mouthing off to Abaddon is perfectly in line with Chaos, the only thing unrealistic about that was that he did not throw a Galvatron-esque temper tantrum and break up his own ship.

>> No.14883091

>He's not the bumbling incompetent that some elements of the community like to portray him as

It's not only the community...

>You may not place a Chaos Lord on the same ship as Abaddon (you don't get to be a Chaos Lord by spending lots of time near a bloody-tempered maniac!).

>"You have failed me for the last time..." Abaddon the Despoiler does not tolerate failure, as many of his followers have discovered to their cost. If Abaddon's re-roll is used for a Command check or Leadership test on another ship or squadron and the test is failed a second time, he will become angry - very, very angry! In the Chaos Shooting phase Abaddon will direct at least half the available firepower and lance strength of the ship he is commanding against the weaklings who have failed him (assuming the worthless scum are within range and fire arc). Resolve the attack as normal, just as if Abaddon's vessel were an enemy.

>Should this dreadful failure occur on Abaddon's own ship, it will lose one damage point as the Black Legion massacre those who failed him. No Leadership increase is gained.

>> No.14883092
File: 236 KB, 1280x960, 1297955309852.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google] [report]

Also, Chaos Gods very rarely actually notice mortal followers, and even then it has to be those who generally do something to catch their attention - for good or ill - in a big way. That three of them would notice, even for a moment, one Chaos Marine from a Legion that generally looks down upon actively worshipping Chaos seems a bit of a stretch.

Yes, but he needed Talos. Talos has the same "gift" as his Primarch, i.e. he was a prophet of sorts, and Abaddon's warp-seers were all blinded and couldn't see shit, so he wanted Talos to join the Black Legion. So he endured it, most likely, because he needed him.

Honestly, you think the Ruinous Powers give a shit about one CSM, one mortal, one flesh-thing? Unless that flesh-thing is the Emperor incarnate or Abaddon or one of their exalted champions, not likely. Remember that they have been described in the Chaos Daemons codex as beings more immersed in their own Great Games in the Immaterium.

>> No.14883139

This. The idea was that Abaddon was trying to convert Talos. The offers from the aspects of the different Chaos Gods were part of his plan as well; he got his sorcerers to summon them up to try and tempt him. Abaddon by no means comes off as the weaker side after that exchange.

Anyway, I really recommend you read the book. It gives depth to traitor marines. It's a book about them which isn't all about boltering people and drinking their vital fluids. It's also rather well written.

Eugh. Was there any actual sensible reason given why every single one of Abaddon's other servants was blinded, so he needed the aid of a single so speshul Night Lord? I really quite like the Night Lords, and the little snippets of them we see in ADB's Horus Heresy stories are wonderfully done, but the main character just sounds really obnoxious.

If you don't like Talos, you better not read Lord of the Night, where Zso Sahaal manages to cripple a hive city by himself.

As for the reason why they were blinded, it wasn't just Abaddon's seers. All psykers were blinded to any predestination. I think it had something to do with the incoming Imperial relief fleet "jamming" them of sorts. And since Talos' gift has nothing to do with the warp, his sight functioned normally. However, it is not something he uses of his own free will... his prophetic visions come at a cost and are more similar to epileptic seizures mixed in with other disorders than a gift of any kind.

>> No.14883195

Apparently there aren't going to be any more DoW2 expansions, but DoW3 is being worked on. I'd expect the usual Eldar/Orks/Space Marines trio to show up, plus one more. Tau seem unlikely, but Necrons could be possible, filling the "terrible, seemingly unstoppable bad guy" role filled in the previous two games by Chaos and Tyranids.

If you want you could think of the Ruinous Powers as a body full of nerves spotting something in their vicinity and reacting to it. Do you notice everything your nerves try to tell you? Fickle nature of Chaos, most likely. It wasn't that Talos was an essential gain for the Black Legion. Abaddon more or less invites him down for a chit chat, isolates him and tries to subvert him, first with words and then warp based temptation. He was a potentially useful asset, one Abaddon was keen enough to possess to pull some shit together for but not enough to dedicate truly significant amounts of resources towards.

As for Talos, most of his fellow traitors think of him as a foolish idealist who believes that their legion was once a great and noble thing. He'd like to see them restored them to their former glory, but that isn't something that's going to happen. At least not in Soul Hunter.

Even if you don't end up liking Talos there are plenty of reasons to read the book. Any bad you might find in there is massively outweighed by the good.

I might see if I can pick it up in one of 2-for-3 offers Waterstones sometimes does in tie-in fiction, but it doesn't sound terribly promising. It takes a really, REALLY good book to outweigh a bad main character IMO.

Complaining about super special 40k protagonists seems fruitless, the setting is filled with those.

Besides Draigo and other much-maligned Ward characters, there's Vect who as of newest DE codex equals Bugs Bunny in tricksiness and guile, Pask with his mad tank skills and blowing up titans with his trusty Russ, Creed and his tactical genius, Gunnery Sergeant Harker routing an Eldar warhost by ambushing it and heavy boltering its Autarch to death (also the guy snapped a Ravener's spine with his bare hands), phenomenal cosmic power C'tan, Logan who makes mockery of the Inquisition and Ecclesiarchy and casually bitchslaps them when they try to retaliate, certain members of the Gaunt's Ghosts...

Seriously it's been a part of the setting for a long long time.

Certain characters in the Gaunt's Ghosts books elicited almost the exact same reaction, to be honest, and go a long way towards why I don't get on with the GG series. Similar story for Harker and Pask to an extent.

But the others? They're supposed to be special. They're the paragons of their species and cultures, the epitome of what it means to be a Dark Eldar, a Cadian, a Space Wolf, or whatever. Talos doesn't seem to fit into that, from what I've seen.

Helrseach has a few human characters as well. ADB seems to make a point of including them in his books when astartes are involved to server as a comparison and for said superhuman killing machine to play off of.

As for the combat, the guy's written that he tries never to include an instance of combat unless it moves the plot forward in some way or helps illustrate an aspect of a character. It shows.

You can be "special" without being super awesome cunning and bestest at everything.

Teclis, Vect, Njal and the like walz through every challenge effortlessly. Even Marneus Calgar has at least had some setbacks.

In Fantasy, Vlad von Carstein and Settra the Imperishable, even Lord Kroak, are iconic faces of their factions that have legitimate failures and flaws. Archaon and Abaddon are generic big bad doomsday guys which is a flawed concept of different sort, but even they don't rival the Wesley Crushers of Warhammer.

Hey, you don't see me questioning you about your special snowflakes. Leave this one alone, it's the only one I actually like.

I joke, of course. Well, perhaps I should've said, a epitome of a true TL for my tastes. Most of the books/'dices have the usual gavthorpestereotype.rtf (kill for the sake of killing, etc..) printed in their bios. Talos isn't like that. He has a cause, he knows his cause is righteous, he doesn't worship the Ruinous Powers, doesn't offer any sort of worship to them. He and his brothers built the Imperium, shed their blood and the blood of god knows how many enemies of the Imperium to preserve it, to keep it safe and orderly. It's impossible the Emperor didn't notice an entire Legion being murderous psychopaths who utilized fear as their main tactic for conquering and quenching rebellions. They were used as a weapon, whether the Emperor sanctioned them or not is the tricky question due to Konrad Curze not being the most reliable witness for the deal. But he most definitely knew what they did. He just used them, just like he used Lorgar up to a point where he no longer found his methods fitting his current needs.

This is just my perspective of course, not a fact. Everyone's gonna have different standards. But Talos.. he knows tradition, he knows the proper usage of fear. Yes, he has done horrendous deeds, he's no hero or a martyr of the Imperium he once served.

tldr; Traitor Legions built the Imperium, they're gonna tear it down (each for their own reasons)

It was a genuine question, not a snipe. I was asking because the closest thing the Black Library has produced to a character that embodies the concept of a Chaos Marine would, IMO, be Honsou from Storm of Iron. Showing their drive, determination, and that they actually can have motives and desires beyond random violence and carnage. But at the same time, he never struck me as obnoxious or sueish in any way.

Yep. Basically Honsou trained him to hate Ventris, to despise him and blame him for his existence in the first place. To make things even more juicy, both Ventris and the Daemonculaba clone had shared their memories so each knew things about one another. Of course they even fight, when one time the clone deliberately misses a vital stop when shooting with his bolter at Ventris and instead Ventris gets a new shiny biotic eye. There's that one book which ends, this one is before Chapter's Due, with Ventris receiving a message from one of his allies that the world they saved from the exterminatus due to the Nightbringer's presence there and defended it from Tau, had been bombed with some manufactured virus which caused the overgrowth of latent 'nid organisms, which then in turn engulfed the entire world and left it somehow dead. I can't remember the specifics, it was a long time since I read it.
