Since its founding the Chapter has made itself known for its vicious tenacity in close range combat and specilation in aquatic enviroments as well as its open disregard for the Codex with its numbers being several times over the stipulated 1,000.

I've started writing up the fluff part of the chapters 1d4chan page. How does this sound thus far?

The Abyssal Jaws chapter came into existence during the 33rd Millennium as part of an unknown founding between the fourth and (allegedly) the eighth. The chapter was founded due to the discovery of a fragment of the ancient text known as “The Call of Cth-” by a lone Administratum clerk. After studying the text, the High Lords were informed of the existence of a bizarre, eldritch creature that lurked beneath the waves of the ocean. Repulsed by this knowledge, the High Lords gave the order that geneseed from the Blood Angels should be stockpiled for the foundation of a new chapter to combat this threat. Rumour has it that sometime before the chapter was formed, their geneseed was altered in an attempt to eradicate the Black Rage and Red Thirst, the two genetic curses that plague their parent chapter. Whether or not this act ever succeeded or if it even occurred, the new chapter would soon develop their own curse. And finally, at the height of the 33rd Millennium, the Abyssal Angels were founded.

If the idea of a dreadnought chapter master doesn't float your boat, maybe this will.

Abyssal Jaws Chapter Master Balthazar is considered an oddity among Adeptus Astartes Chapter Masters for several reasons. The first is his adamant refusal to do any of the paperwork typically required of his office, such as providing documents detailing his campaigns, organizing tithes to the high lords, or even appointing captains. Instead this work is handled by a senior official in the Imperial Guard. Balaton takes pains to ensure going on campaign with the human several times to be sure of his trustworthiness. Beyond that, there is no criteria for having the position.

Inquisitor Yiyandra of the Ordo Herteticus investigated the Chapter Masters odd situation. Her official report on the matter is blank, save for a single quote from Balthazar. "I've got better things to do than paperwork." To this day the inquisitor will not speak more on the subject.

Another notable feature of the Chapter Master is how eagerly he goes to war, with or without troops. While other Chapter Masters occasionally know periods of rest, Balthazar continually wages war. He has been known to petition captains for troops whenever he is on campaign, as his honor guard stands as the sole unit truly under command. If a captain will not personally pledge his troops, Balthazar will ask individual sargents to join his adventures, a call that is never denied, no matter how much it irks his captains. The fruits of his successes however, are more than enough to quiet his critics. When no troops are within a reasonable distance for him to command, Balthazar will ask to lead Imperial Guard regiments on deployments, an event that is considered to be a great honor among Guard leaders. While few other Chapter Master would even consider replacing their loyal marines with guardsmen, Balthazar maintains that "They're not any worse than a space marine, just smaller."

For the past one hundred years, Balthazar has always been seen chewing a tentacle in his mouth in the same manner a normal man might chew a cigar.

The tentacle itself is extremely unusual. It is a sickly shade of green, with various brown spots all along it's body. It extends about .3 meters long, and has been known to spontaneously put itself alight. Oddly enough, nothing can put out this flame. No water can douse it, no movement can disrupt it. It has even been known to stay aflame in the void of space. The flame will however, go out just as suddenly as it began, with no explanation. It seems that no matter how long Balthazar has chewed the tentacle, it stays intact.

Some say that it is a trophy of a demon that Balthazar slew, and tried to eat, only to find that it would never come apart, and he has yet to give up eating it. Others claim that it is a relic of the chapter, and that it grants Balthazar superhuman abilities. A few in rival Space Marine chapters, like the Sons of Malice, claim that it is a mutation, and that Balthazar is touched by the dark powers. All that is known, is that, when asked, Balthazar will refuse to answer, preferring the mystery around him.

Chapter Tactics
Any unit in an army lead by Balthazar that has the Combat tactics special rule exchanges it for the ability to treat any amount of water as normal terrain, and gets Furious Charge. This includes Balthazar. In addition, any model without a close combat weapon may buy one for 1 point
Tentacle of Balthazar.
This twitching tentacle is of great use to Balthazar in battle. Once per game, it may release a thick cloud of....something. Balthazar and the unit he is with increase their cover save by +2 and may move an extra 6 inches in their movement phase. This flaming and flailing tentacle also acts as a digital weapon for Balthazar.
Spear of the Deep
This Relic Blade is a long spear with what appears to be three claws at the end. Upon being used in combat, however, the claws writhe and snap at everything around them. This Relic Blade has rending.
Wrist Harpoon
Str 7 Ap 4 acts as Magna Harpoon in all other respects.
Friend of the Guard
Balthazar may be taken as an HQ choice by an Imperial Guard army.

Previous thread suggested that the MK III "Iron Armor" would be the preferable choice of armor for the Jaws due to the fact that they go on constant environments of both space and sea. Personally, I think we should go for it, unless someone finds a reason not to.

Well, the most important thing is that it looks totally badass. Second, MKIII armour would be very practical for the chapter to use.
-being a precursor to Terminator armour, it provides much greater protection than average
-the chapter maintains very limited amounts of actual Terminator armour, and would have to use this as a natural replacement
- the downside of the armour (that it is too heavy for normal combat) is negated because the chapter focuses on space and underwater combat
-the increased weight helps to keep the wearer submerged
-the increased armour also helps combat the pressure of extreme depth
-though most of the armour is forward mounted, its not like they'll be turning their backs on living enemies
-being less advanced than more modern armour, it is easier to produce; very important considered the chapters somewhat limited production capacity and large numbers
-it looks totally badass

And remember, this does not mean that the chapter relies completely on MKIII armour, it's just the hefty majority.

Lets start taking down general information to keep as a framework for the chapter. Fights in space and sea, aquatic theme. Uses mass amounts of new production iron armor. Is that a tech world deal, or do they locally manufacture the stuff? They use a lot of breacher drills (see the drill in the rites of battle deathwatch suppliment) is the armor themed like the salamanders, or just brutal and effective? Can we safely rule out things they dont do or use? Im gonna go with...anything flame based. Probably will use a lot of spears, drills and bolters. Hook hand bionics? or is that overkill on the aquatic motif? What do they look like under their power armor. Im kind of imagining a grizzled, semi insane Gordan's fisherman. We totally have to get some sort of write faggotry about their third lung being able to filter oxygen from water.

I can picture them (and a lot of the art of them thus far) has the armour modified for a more aquatic theme (see I AM GIANT FISH pauldron). The chapter also tends to take trophies from their enemies and don't remove the blood stains from their power armour (they consider the splatters to be trophies as well.

As for their weapons and stuff, you're probably right about flame throwers. Meltas might still be used though. As for hook hands, that might be going a bit far, but the chapter does use chain-hooks. And, like I said in the previous thread:

As for how they appear underneath the armour? I'm honestly not sure. Outside of all the carnage, the marines tend to be really fucking friendly, especially to non-marines. There has been a picture of a helmetless marine with facepaint going around since one of the first threads (see picture). I picture them looking... Well, as a Blood Angel successor, perty. We decided last thread that they'd be Space Brazillians, so there is a lot of variety in how the marines look racially/skin tonne-wise.

I was thinking about what they would eat/ fight most commonly. So many chapters are always batteling orks, and tau, and tyranids or chaos. Who deals with the common rebels and anarchists of the imperium. Im sure they still fight and kill others, but hey. awesome. Ok concept for their forge facility, their guardsmen would move around their warzones afterwards like little remoras taking all the scrap and salvage for transport back to the fortress monestary to be melted down or repaird. Going by last thread, we know the Jaws hold their Black Priests (Librarian-Chaplains) in such high regard that they more or less run the chapter. In particular, it is they that advise the chapter master and captains which battles they should take part in. This would probably result in the IG High Command despising them, even though they are so loved by the field troops.
In addition, chapters that believe in purity and whatnot would likely refuse to fight along side them. I'd say most Ultramarine, Imperial Fist, and Dark Angel descendants would hold them in contempt. The White Scars and Raven Guard would probably just ignore them. While they would hardly approve of the extend to which the Jaws practice cannibalism, the Space Wolves and Salamanders would consider them bros (like that one guy who is weird as shit but is great fun to play 40k with and comes up with the best DnD campaigns ever!). The Blood Angels would treat them like a mildly retarded cousin that can still function in society but which they don't like to think or talk about. Believe it or not, I could totally see the Iron Hands successors (though not the Hands themselves) getting along quite well with them since they take the Forge so seriously (in thread 6 we decided that the Forge is almost its own entity within the chapter, providing the crews for all the vehicles and serving as Devastator Squads under the Techmarines).

The Sisters of Battle would hate their guts (except for those Gate ones, they're cool) because of their practices. The Inquisition would 'frown upon' much of what they become, but would tolerate it since they had the chapter established in the first place and since the Jaws still appear to be loyal. It also doesn't hurt that the chapter does not directly deal with chaos related artifacts, and merely secures the location until the Inquisition can deal with it.
In fact, we should have one of the =][='s most important vaults hidden in the chapter's fortress. That would give them an excuse to constantly 'check up on' them, too. The Sea Guard should be considered almost like Stormtroopers, since they undergo many of the same trials and trainings the Jaws go through, but lack the geneseed and power armor. It would allow them to pick and choose their fights so they can stay with the Jaws while still looking like an official unit (the High Lords don't like it when chapters fight along side the IG on a permanent basis; just look at Huron).

I'm thinking this. After their foundation, the Abyssal Angels are sent on their way as a fleet-based chapter. Since the oceans of Terra are long gone, the chapter is charged with searching oceanic worlds for any sign of this "Cth" character. They travel around for an unknown amount of time (probably for a few millenia) when news arrives that something rotten has been discovered on the planet Maresia. The chapter investigates, finds something close enough to what they've been searching for and sets up shop there.

How does all this sound thus far? I'm also really not sure when the chapter would start to develop its unique organisation.

2. Both chapters have had name changes during their history (Abyssal Angels became Abyssal Jaws and Fire Claws became Relictors)

It seems there was a misconception down near the end of thread 6. Baltasar (the Portuguese spelling of Balthazar) was the name chosen for the Chief Librarian-Chaplain to replace the place holder name of "Bob." Somehow there was some confusion between his naming and the first bits of fluff for the chapter master. If you look, you'll find the phrase, "Baltasar the Vigilant, First of the Black Priests, Keeper of the Dark Tomes, Lord of the Deep Waters, Banger of Hot Bitches." Note that "Banger of Hot Bitches was likely supposed to be a joke, and a poor one at that.

This little exchange came exactly one post before we started working on the chapter master. Look to posts:
14766003 (Well, it looks like we've got our figure of legend fluffed out. How about the chapter's current chapter master?) and 14766221 (make him a dreadnaught. The future Lord Baltasar passed through his tutelage). The second post listed being a rejected concept for the unnamed chapter master.

Land Raiders are mentioned in the fluff to be amphibious , but a chapter all transported by Raiders would be stupid. Maybe put propellers on the back of all vehicles so they could go under water.

Heresy i know, but we are already there, plus it would be really cool for them to completly lack certain technology, but have specific things that make them even older, like instead of a reliance on drop pods they exclusively use teleporting, heavy use of old, old technology. View of the Abyssal Jaws:The Recongergator faction has a hard time form a lasting consensus on the Abyssal Jaws. On the one hand, the Abyssal Jaws are a old chapter that ruled Maresia for many millennia, as such they are but another institution that must fall before the wave of change lest all humanity drown in the maelstrom of decay. But on the other hand the Abyssal Jaws are a highly unorthodox chapter that exists on the fringe of the imperial administration, as such they have the potential to be allies in the war against sterility and stagnation.

Long term goals on Maresia: There is a plot that has been brewing amongst the Recongergators of [SECTOR REDACTED]. By cunning use of moles and infiltrations going back hundreds of year the Sector Govenor Mr. Z* has become fearful of the Abyssal Jaws undue independence. Soon Mr. Z will clampdown on freedoms of the chapter by barring them transport on Navy ships and other similar actions. In response to this affront the Abyssal Jaws will rebel, ending both the rule of Mr. Z and them selfs thanks to the Imperial response. The martyrdom of the Abyssal Jaws shall then in turn sow decent amongst other space marines.

The first challenge for the chapter would be to discover the location of the mysterious being known only as “Cth” and then terminating it. While seemingly a simple challenge on paper, the oceans of Terra had long since faded into history and there were countless worlds in existence with vast oceans to search. The chapter was given its own fleet and sent on its crusade, no-one knowing if they would ever find this creature and destroy it before it could pose a threat to the Imperium of Man. The following two thousand millennia would become known to the Abyssal Jaws as “The Search for the Forbidden City.”

The chapter known then as the Abyssal Angels was a far cry from what it would eventually become. While not the strictest followers of the Codex Astartes, their organisation was practically identical to that of their parent chapter. When the Tyranid Hive Fleet Behemoth reached the world Desicon 3, a predominantly aquatic world, the Ordo Xenos requested forces from both the Abyssal Jaws and Ultramarines chapters to help defend the world. When a powerful, mutated, hive tyrant was discovered to be the sole synapse creature for the invasion (a very odd scenario, but do to the powerful currents that would drag both marine and monster away, it was perhaps necessary for the fleet.
A kill team made of marines from both chapters was assembled, led by Chaplin Cassius and killed the hive tyrant. However, it came at a high price, as nearly half of the Jaws, and nearly all of the Ultramarines were slain. Cassius entered a coma, but the Abyssal Jaws could not tell, and, as there tradition dictated, they began eating the Chaplin to gain his strength. To their amazement, Cassius screamed upon being eaten. At which point he was returned to the surface, and given proper medical attention and bionics for the missing flesh. While the Abyssal Jaws have since apologized for the mistake, relations between the chapters have been frosty ever since

Massive Stature: Megas has +2 Str, +1 T. In addition, he is able to be picked out by ranged fire if in a squad when Goredrinker has died. If Goredrinker is alive, the beast can be assigned wounds instead of Megas.

Blood Rites: Megas must challenge Independent Characters, Monstrous Creatures, Walkers, and Sergeants to single combat. This means that Megas and the target must be in base to base contact in close combat. In addition, if Megas wounds a target but does not finish them off, he may Sic! Goredrinker on them afterwards.

The Blood-Stained Standard:

An army that fields Megas Odon must take the Blood-Stained Standard, bearing the First Captain's heraldry. The standard grants +1A and +1 I to any allied unit within 6 inches of it. In addition, the standard-bearer may rally once a game, causing any allied units withing 6 inches to gain Megas' Fearless and Furious Charge rules for the next assault phase.

View of the Abyssal Jaws: Inquisitors belonging to the Xanthites view the Abyssal Jaws as a boon. The chapter keeps the Old One locked in the depths of Maresia. That fits the Xanthites of [SECTOR REDACTED] just fine, for they do not yet understand this elder beats and what they do not understand they can not wield against the enemies of man. Meanwhile Xanthites inquisitors can rummage through the remains of chaos war-bands that have been rebuked by the Abyssal Jaws.

Long term goals on Maresia: Xanthites are infuriated with the horror hidden in Maresia. Ever since the world and the sleeping terror was found the Xanthites have sought to ditermen if the Old One could be made to obey the will of man of if it must stay slumbering until the end of existence. So far they have not succeeded, the warp-trinkets of broken war-bands make for an excellent consolation prize however.

This weapon looks like a combination of a Gatling gun and and a harpoon. It has two modes of fire

This mode fires a bunch of harpoons that skewer and drag enemies. You may have this shoot at any number of targets, as long as they are all within 6' of each other. Any infantry model (model, not unit) hit with this is automatically moved up to 18' by Davy Jones, with normal scatter. For afterwards, the model takes a hit with a 1 str for every 3 inches moved, with no ap. This can take units out of cohesion. Any vehical hit is treated as if it got hit with a lifta droppa. Superheavies are unaffected.

They resemble small, predatory fish from the Jaws' homeworld, and are just as devastating. Sawtooth grenades are hurled in handfuls of three to six grenades. After just a thousand years it became apparent that the chapter had become a specialised military force. its not entirely about the weakness of the armor, but the visual style of it. It was also covered earlier that they are hyper aggressive in combat, so their backs are unlikely to get shot and they actually benefit from the increased frontal armor. For a bit of fluff, the ship that crashed and dumped that warhound into the sea could have very well been a hive sized foundry which is where they get their antiquated gear from. some chunk that survived re-entry is still functional on the bottom of the ocean floor. Keep banging heads together for great ideas.

Think of it this way. In Battletech, it is a thousand years from modern day. Many modern day languages, religions, cultural aspects, myths and legends are still around, although new forms abound.

I don't think you're getting the point. The idea that in 40,000 years time, after 35,000 years of constant expansion and change that anybody would have any resemblance whatsoever to a 'Brazilian' culturally or genetically is mind numbingly unlikely.

Just a few years before the Chapter left Terra for the darkness of space, an Adeptus Mechanicus expedition under Magos Explorator Mihaita Akamu and protected by a detachment of Angels Vermilion began the exploration of a mysterious derelict vessel. As their ship approached the derelict, Mihaita realised that this was the Sword of Crimson, a Blood Angels vessel confirmed lost pre-heresy. After much discussion with the Blood Angels over these suits of power armour, it was agreed that they would be given to the newly formed Abyssal Angels, proof that they were blessed by their father chapter.

MKIII “Iron” Power Armour, originally designed for combat in the cramped tunnels of the Squat Worlds, had its frontal armour significantly reinforced, while the rear armour was lessened to compensate for the added weight. Considered to be uncomfortable and clumsy to move in, the armour was deemed unsuitable for convention fighting. However, with its weight significantly reduced while fighting in zero-gravity and oceanic environments, the MKIII Power Armour quickly became the signature suit of choice for the chapter. However, as the years wore on and marines fell in battle, their armour often damaged beyond repair the chapter began to mix and match the various types of power armour at their disposal in an attempt to get the best results they could from the surviving suits. well so far Maresia is a world with about the same gravity as Earth but is notable larger in diameter and is covered by +90% ocean and that the majority of the hives are smaller floating cities or built upon rigging in shallow regions of the sea. The largest patches of dry land tend to be covered with arcologies though there are patches of small islands where it isnt practical to build such large scale buildings. There are of course some smaller hives that are completely underwater.

The economy of Maresia is built around kelp/algae farming, fishing the over abundant sea life, and harvesting salt from the water. There are of course ore and petrochemical mining along the sea-floor and local refiners and factories to make use of the stuff. Most its manufacturing is geared toward ocean-going vessals and other sea related things.

I'd imagine that rather than living in the hives, the nobility live aboard their own vessals (aircraft carrier size) along with their fishing fleets.

The initiation rites require the aspirants to locate and kill one of the dozen species of "sea monster" that dwell in Maresia on their own and consume its heart and/or brain. Of course, it's better for the aspirants to seek dangerous prey or handicap themselves in someway (i.e. simple weapons only).

Almost every boy from age 12 to 16 will attempt this though only those who go after the most dangerous prey and succeed will pass. Those who aim lower can at least be assured respect amonst the Maresia Sea-Guard and a chance at scoring a wife. Though aiming too low only earns mockery.

The female population of the planet, while unable to join the Abyssal Jaws, still undergo the same initiation test to gain social standing as Maresia has very much embraced the ideal of survival of the fittest. Because all the men who pass become Abyssal Jaws, most high ranking positions in Maresia tend to be occupied by women and surnames tend to be matrilineal. Having sons that enter the Abyssal Jaws further increases social standing and so the most prominent families tend to be lead by a matriarch who has had a number of her sons enter the Abyssal Jaws.

the Fortress-Monestary is located on Noxyssus, the green moon of Maresia, though it would make sense than the Fortress-Monstary itself is floats in the toxic oceans of Noxyssus.

Noxyssus is about 50% dry land and 50% ocean. Unlike Maresia's ocean though the seas of Noxyssus are acidic enough to be deadly to normal humans and the storms that wrap lazily around the moon of course deposit acid rain. The moon has always been that way and life on it has evolved to deal with it accordingly, which makes it VERY DANGEROUS. The dry land is mostly wetland, bogs, swamps, and marshes and such; the exceptions being the highlands (which there aren't many of).

Aside from the Abyssal Jaws and their serfs, the are only small chemical refiners in some of the safer areas.

I'm not really sure how I'll tie in the Abyssal Angels and Abyssal Jaws though. I'm thinking of keeping them around as a Crusading chapter for a few thousand years, then having an Inquisitor or something discover the ruins on Maresia. The chapter, realising they have found their holy grail speeds towards Maresia at full speed and sets-up shop there. After that, everything pretty much falls into place.
