Does anyone have a scan of pages 2 and 3 from Battlefleet Gothic Magazine #6?

Those have the original rules from the Necron Shroud that were altered later on. I need them.

OP Here,

The rules I am talking about are the original rules for the Necron Shroud in the Battlefleet Gothic Magazine, Volume 6, published foreverago.

Picture shown are the rules for the shroud that were printed later, which were considerably nerfed.

I found a torrent with BFG Magazine scans in it, but issue 6 is mysteriously missing pages 2 and 3...

I want the originals so I can see what the ship looked like back when the models were more 'fluffy'. I think it may have had a scarab swarm manufacturing plant, but until I get a full scan of that issue, I cannot confirm.

I was once part of a multiplayer XBAWKSHUEG BFG battle.

The first planetkiller was crippled by turn three from all the novacannon shells exploding around it. The second one died to a critical hit from boarding Space Marines in turn five.
And it was my Melta-Torpedoes that caused too many fire criticals for the Ork Space Hulk to handle.

That battle was just completely and totally epic. 7 vs. 7, 4 referees, well over 22k points. Took a whole weekend to resolve.

And the opening torpedo salvo from the Imperial side was glorious.
Like launching a pod salvo, for those who know Honor Harrington.

Does anyone have any BFG stories to keep this thread alive?

>> No.14586573

Part of what kills BFG is that people assume it's not popular.

They don't think it's popular, so they don't buy it.

It turns out, if you have just a chaos and imperial fleet, and show it off at a hobby store... It blossoms quickly.

Every 40k player I have ever met LOVES it, most love it more then 40k (because it forces more tactics to be considered and used, aside from dumping buckets of dice on the table)

Fantasy players appreciate it as well, since lots of the facing and movement rules make sense to them.

Are there any other component charts? those are gorgeous!

>> No.14586632

Absolutely! Recently I went to my local battle bunker and had an EPIC series of battles. I fought against nids, imps, chaos, all sorts of stuff.

the greatest moments were against the imperial player and the nid player..

The battle was NOT going well for the imperial player, my Grey Knight strike cruisers and barge were boarding and crushing his cruiser fleet ship by ship, outflanking them with superior armor and maneuverability. The barge was crippling on average one ship a turn, things were looking grim.

Then, he made a surprising move, and declared all ahead full on a pair of his lunar cruisers. one of them had been just crippled from a pair of strike cruisers boarding it. He rammed my battle barge, dealing 5 damage, and a hull breach resulting in two more damage.. crippling my pristine barge in a single move.. neither one of his ships took damage from the event.

I was not going to allow this! the two strike cruisers I had decided to follow suit, all ahead full'd, and RAMMED right into the rear of the offending ships. The crippled lunar was hulked, and the other was crippled as my strike cruiser INSERTED itself into the engine room of the other.

>> No.14586687

The tyranid battle had me playing as my imperial navy.

The nid player was ALL ordnance, massive claws and feeder tentacles. My imperial fleet was focused on heavy firepower. (Two L column shift overlords, two dictators, two lunars and a gothic).

The battle was MESSY, before he even got close, one of his hive ships was crippled, and two of his massive claw cruisers were dead. It was not enough to stop the living tide of ships, and soon i found my fleet swarmed by dozens of massive claw krakens, feeder tentacle escorts and vanguards, and a pristine hive ship eating a lunar for lunch.

Then i pressed the motherfucking button. The lunar exploded with a 14 cm range, causing one of the dead cruisers to also explode. The resulting firestorm obliterated 75% of his escorts, and crippled his last hive ship. A total loss became a quick victory.

Have you ever played against orks or Necrons?

Presently I'm acquiring the following fleets (each at 1,500 to 2,000 points each):

Orks, Necrons, and Imperium.

>> No.14586710

I have a hell of a lot of fun with my Tau in BFG. It's like I'm playing WW2 in the Age of Sail.

>> No.14586752

With and against.

Necrons SEEM like twenty kinds of broken, because it's supposed to feel like they are billions of years more advanced then anything in the game.

In reality, necrons are very difficult to play and actually WIN with. If ONE of your cruisers dies, the game is over, sorry, you lost. You can obliterate the entire enemy fleet, and you still lost (or at best draw)
Heaven forbid you lose your tombship. A hulked tombship can cost as much as 1650 victory points.

How do you win with Necrons? using your brain, it may seem fun to use your inertialess drive to zip all over the table, but it isolates your fleet and makes it easy to single out ships.. Use it on escorts on turn 1, make the enemy player freak and focus on them while your other ships move into position normally.

How do you beat Necrons? They are the ONE fleet that space marines are built from the ground up to defeat. Tough enough to take the damage they deal out, weapons that hit and crit on a 4 (the necron critical table is extremely painful), and they can crush necrons in boarding actions.

Orks are the fleet you play if you want to have some good old fashioned goofy fun. They got a very nice boost with the new rules, but they are confusing as balls for me.

My ork fleet is comprised of four terror ships, two hammer battle krooza's and six brute rams.

The whole point of the fleet is for laughs. If i blow a ship up, it's fun. If my ships are blown up, it's fun. when i ram, it's fun, when i get rammed it's fun.

When I explode in the middle of their fleet... a 10 hit cruiser is so delightfully sexy.

>So, I should take care when running the Harvest Fleet?

In general, yes. Their guys are extremely powerful, but if you lose one guy that's it. Of course, this has all been said before.

>What does having armour value of 6 mean, by the way?

It means when the enemy does the damage roll, only a 6 will damage that armor. If a ship has armor 5+, when they fire macrobatteries they need a 5+ to do something. Armor 6 means you need a 6 to do something. Lances default require a 4+ to do something.

Yes. Most races have the setup of take hits, remove Void Shields.

Necrons instead get a save based on their ship type. If a shot does something, raiders get a 6+ save, 5+ for other ships, and 4+ for the tombship. Think of it as an armor save.

Points constraints.

I play 1500 battles, since they are tournament standard, and I LOVE the hammers too much to not field them (I converted mine out of a pair of Avenger Grand Cruisers... they have more dakka then you can imagine!!)

Onslaughts are utter BOSS, with d6 weapon batteries each, one lucky lock on roll can wreck almost anything

Savages are the fastest platform for heavy gunz, but the range is painful.

Ravagers are OK, but you cannot combine their salvo, which can hurt results. Also, the odds of you reloading are very very small.

>> No.14587008

The mechanicus fleet is utter boss. They have amazing ships and sexy upgrades (to say the least!) also, with the most recent rules updates, some of their best ships had points reductions, and the Ark can now be a carrier as well as a punchy ship.

The greatest problem is the cost of each miniature, fortunately, your fleet will be small due to the points cost.

I play the tournament standard 1500 points, enough for you to fit an ark in (which you should always bring, since it is #3 on the list of most powerful battleships in the game)

The mechanicus fleet is a more elite Imperial fleet. Their ships are slightly modified standard imperial ships. IF your just starting to learn though you'll find it easier to just go with the normal imperial fleet and then try out the Mechanicus once you've got the hang of the rules and how Imperial ships play. yeah, no warp tech with necrons so we get armor saves not sheilds. which is a mixed bag, if your lucky your invincible if not your meat. What makes them a bitch though is that they repair all crits on a 4+.
Crons rely on counter fire more that others imoh. Cause if they get too many lucky shots your boned, but to stay that close to you invites doom (lighting arcs are a whore) plus once you get a ships shields down you get like 5 hit and runs from even an escourt squad and they are dead in the water.

And yeah, their holofields are amazing, but the sheer firepower that the orkz are able to unleash when in range manages to overpower them. If I didn't have the fields, it'd just be a guaranteed goodbye to anything in range.

>> No.14587140

Eldar are the single most misunderstood army in the game.

They are just as balanced as any other fleet, which most players don't realize.

Having problems with eldar players? push them into a corner. Yes, you will lose ships, but they will inevitably fail holofields, and eventually they need to make a push through your lines in order to survive.

be careful with this tactic. Craftworld eldar can take Aspect Warrior fighting crews, and may just board your ass instead of running away. With howling banshees and striking scorpions on their ships, they wreck face on par with space marines.

I suggest making fleets with several range overlaps to assist in dealing with tricksy eldar.

In 1 turn with lock on I have turned a imperial cruiser to a flaming wreck, crossed to another cruiser wrecked it, then crippled a second cruiser from this one ship.

>> No.14587197

The Necron tombship can obliterate any other model in the game in a single locked on round of fire. Only the hulk can guarantee survival against a round of fire, and it will end up with less then half it's hits left. It has a 4+ save against any damage aside from boarding, can upgrade that to a 2+, goes d6x10 AAF and can turn while AAF. It can also have a guaranteed LD10, with a weapon that destroys enemy leadership permanently.

There is NO ship that does not fear the tombship.

The emperor is a GOOD battleship, but it is not a great one. It only is equipped with batteries and launch capacity, making it heavily susceptible to bridge smashed critical. It is also a bit of a one-trick pony. The other carrier battleships outshine it. For example:

The Oberon is cheaper, has the same LD bonus, and has more firepower. Launch capacity can be made up with a mars.

The Despoiler has FAR more firepower, and can take prow torpedos (which is a huge bonus when you reload ordnance all the time). it also comes with a-boats standard

The Explorer is 230 points, and has NO restrictions on numbers taken (you can have as many as you want in a fleet)

Gorbags revenge launches fighta-bomma's, has better gunz, and comes with torpedo's standard.

The Void Stalker can break most ships in half with it's 45 cm Pulsar lances, and has holofields.

The emperor is GOOD, but it just cannot compare to the rest.

Here are some pointers.

Tyrants shine like gold in the Mechanicus fleet, especially if you roll up the weapon relays (the lance helps a lot to make the vessel stronger)

Dictators are utter boss, since they have 4 turrets and torps and that super sexy dorsal lance.

Lunars are always good, and can throw 3 lances out the broadside

Gothics are SICK, but have no batteries. Be careful against eldar.

No dominators, sorry bro.

That was five or six years ago, before everyone forgot about BFG. . ..

We basically agreed to just get everything on the table that we could scrape up. Ended up with 4 Chaos 3 Orks vs. 5 Imps 2 Eldar (inb4 hurrdurr good guys vs. bad guys)

The Eldar were on the flanks with the Imps evenly spaced between them, Chaos and Orks basically set up in two seperate groups. I was second from the right side, so an Eldar to my right and another imp to my left.
Both of them were very strike craft heavy, while my fleet was almost exclusively gunline (and torps). I had a few strikeraft, but I used those as fighters to to cover myself.

Across from us were the three Ork players, centered around an Ork Space Hulk.

Our left flank wanted every Nova Cannon fired at the Planetkiller, so we had to kill the Space Hulk the oldfashioned way. Without going into too much detail, teh Eldar player used massed bomber strikes to clear a way for my gunline, we systematically reduced the hulks' turrets and then I basically finished it with Melta Torpedoes (they automatically cause D3 Fire criticals) (contd)

depends. The marks are all useful depending on the style of fleet you want. Want to board people in the face? go khorne. Want to live longer? go nurgle. Want to be sure you pass your LD? go tzeench. Want to snort coke off the ass of a demonette? go slaanesh.

Point-per-point, escorts have more firepower then cruisers. If your enemy does not pay attention to them, he may find one of his prized ships reduced to a molten pile of slag. allow me to give you an example.

For 180 points you can have a Lunar/ Gothic cruiser, OR six cobras.

Six cobras launch a strength 12 torpedo salvo, have 30 cm movement and 90 degree turning arcs. If put in the right place, this can obliterate a cruiser.

The Lunar or gothic may get on one or two hits with either it's strength 6 torp OR it's broadside guns, usually never both.

Escorts die quickly though once attention is drawn to them. Use the attention to move your big ships in for the kill

If you like using escorts, consider the following fleets:

Corsair eldar (most powerful escorts in the game)

Space Marines (Tough and super-strong escorts, better then the IN counterparts)

Tau (castellans have 45cm batteries and 2 gravitic launchers)

Dark Eldar (you have to take them)

The necron tomb ship can erase a planet killer from existence in a single round of fire.

If I were the necron player, I would AAF first round to get out of arc of the armageddon gun (preferrably behind it). I can survive any following fire for a turn with good odds, lock on, and blow it to shit. All you need to do is cripple it or force it to brace, and it's over.

an ideal firing solution for a tomb ship is:
18 dice for lightning arc
6 dice for particle whip.

1. I notice that the grey knights Strike Cruiser on forge world is only 6 pounds($11). While all comparable ships on GW's site are $19 or more. Is there a reason?
2. How big is a SM Battle Barge? I'm thinking of getting one to use as a showpiece when I get my salamanders force to 2.5K, but I don't want to spend $35 for something thats smaller than a land raider.

Anyone have advice for someone interested in collecting Imperial Navy? Any ships to avoid like nurgle, or that I should be all over?

>> No.14593417

Love your cruisers, Imperial navy functions the best when your cruisers are in a squadron of 2. Lunars may seen weak, but in pairs are amazing. Gothics are the only cruiser who do not need squadroning (they are best as fire support for the rest of the fleet)

The retribution is weak, but cheap. The Emperor is expensive, but lets you consolidate your launch capacity into a single vessel, letting you focus on firepower. The Oberon and Apocalypse are your best battleships hands down.

Nova cannons are not the answer to your problems, and other players HATE fighting against them (aside from eldar). Don't take more then 3.

Your escorts are powerful, but not enough to replace your whole fleet with.

Keep your fleet together in formation, this allows you to overlap firing arcs and prevents your fleet from being isolated (this will end the game before it starts!)

Your battle cruisers determine your tactics. Mars' for bombardment and bombers, Armageddons for medium range obliteration, Overlords for long range domination. focus your tactics around them if you don't have a battleship in play.

Light cruisers are golden

The imperial navy is focused on weathering fire, and giving a ton of it back.

Here is my tournament Imperial navy fleet, with nothing but cruisers.

2x Overlords (with left column shift and LD8 commander)
2x Lunar cruisers
2x Dictator Cruisers
1x Gothic Cruiser.

Exactly 1500 points.

This fleet allows my dictators and gothics to be aggressive while backed up by extreme long range fire support. Each ship is tough, and in the squadron, they double their firepower against enemy ships.

Since the bulk of the fleet is short range, the enemy still must contend with your overlords, whom should be screened by the rest of your fleet. Throwing a strength sixteen battery and four lances at 60cm, along with a st 12 torpedo is fantastic, and with the upgrade to gunnery it makes them just as good as any other battle cruiser.

The Mars is an artillery cruiser. Designed to fire it's nova cannon and launch attack craft without getting trapped in combat. It can purchase additional turrets and gunnery shifts. Keep this bad boy back and sniper your enemy to death. these also do very well in a squadron of two

The Armageddon, like the gothic, is one of those rare cruisers in the imperial navy that does just fine all on it's own. It is designed to get up close and personal with the enemy, and punch them in the face. It can take a nova cannon OR it's normal torpedo's. If your carrier capacity is taken up by normal cruisers or a battleship, take these badboys as an alternative to the overlord.

Following the advice of >>14586573
>>14589812 , could you recommend me two relatively cheap chaos and imperial fleets that would be evenly matched? A sort of duel-fleet, to show off the game.

I have even less understanding of chaos than I have of the IN; I think I recall that they were faster, lightly armored on the front, had better weapons and ranges, and were cheaper, yet were still somehow balanced.

I disagree with squadroning Imperial cruisers. But do keep them in a line, together. They should always be facing the enemy, while Chaos cruisers always want to be abeam.

>> No.14594041

If you are using CRUISERS ONLY then i suggest the following fleets. I will provide two fleets for each faction.

Imperial Navy:
2x Overlords
2x Lunars
2x Dictators
1x Gothic
you may have seen this fleet mentioned before. It's a solid, tough to crack fleet and is extremely competitive.

fleet 2
2x mars battlecruisers w ld8 commander +1 turret on command vessel
5x mix of gothic or lunar cruisers

Both fleets are very competitive.

This fleet functions the best with independent ships, but hades and Murder cruisers work spectacularly in squadrons.

2x Devistations
1x Styx (w LD 8 commander, mark of nurgle, mark of khorne)
2x Murders
1x Hades
1x slaughter

As you can see, this fleet is focused on both long and short range, your styx is harder to kill, and is a nightmare when boarding.

Chaos is the only fleet where i actually suggest forking the cash over for a Repulsive grand cruiser. Point-per-point, it is the most powerful ship in the game.

1x Repulsive GC with +1 shield and dorsal lance upgrade, LD 9 commander, mark of Slaanesh, mark of nurgle
2x Murder cruisers
1x hades
2x Devistation cruisers
1x slaughter

Can I get some help? My own BFG thread seems to have collapsed, and I was directed here by some kind anon. I'm going up against a friend on Saturday, 1250 point game. Would anyone mind critiquing my list?

Plaguefleet of Nurgle

2 Chaos Strike Cruisers with Terminators (Taken from the Additional Ships Compendium, received opponent's permission to use)- 310 points

2 Slaughter Cruisers- 330 points

2 Hades Heavy Cruisers with Mark of Nugle and Chaos Marine crews and Terminator squads- 610 points

Comes out to 1250 exactly if I've done my math right. The idea is to use the Strike Cruisers and Slaughters as a vanguard for my forces, the Strike Cruiser fighters dealing with any enemy ordnance (friend is playing Dark Eldar) while the Hades are the heavy hitters, using their teleport hit and run attacks against the shieldless eldar ships.

Any advice/thoughts?

Bump for BFG discussion. I really like the Dominator. Not even for the nova canon. But DAT BATTERY STRENGTH 12.

>> No.14597017

In smaller games (1,000pts or less) you should use more escorts because cruisers are hard to kill... you sometimes end up with one cruiser on each side, trying vainly to destroy the other. Boring. But in large games they get swallowed up (die too easily).

In 1500pts, they're a lot more useful to the Imperials than Chaos. Swords and Cobras are great. They're also essential (at any fleet size) to Space Marines and Corsair Eldar.

Just remember, in this game escorts have MORE firepower and LESS armor than cruisers, for equivalent points. That means you actually need to take care of them, and hold them back until you can get a killing blow in. They are not ablative armor for your cruisers!

Storytime? Storytime!

A game I witnessed years ago between Craftworld Eldar and Orks, with escalation rules (read: sensor blips at the table edges).

So, it's a few turns in and that Void Stalker and the three escorts accompanying it are sitting near the table edge, having just ruined two Kroozas. THe only damage they took in return was a hit on the Voidstalker that resulted in a lucky crit taking out the holofields, so the Eldar player dcides to sit there for a turn to repair.

Cue a sensor blip coming up near them and the Ork player rolling wether it arrives. It does and the Ork player goes to his case to get the model. The Eldar player is a bit miffed, but not overtly concerned. What`s it gonna be? A few escorts?

The Ork player comes back and, with a cackling laugh, places his Space Hulk on the table. And then he announces that the Warboss is gonna hit the red button. Cue a ramming roll against the Voidstalker. It hits. It also hits two of the escorts and one fails the holofield save.

Everybody, even the Eldar player, started laughing like psychos as they roll out just how flat a pancake those Eldar ships become.

Bump for BFG

>> No.14603604

Damn right, bump for BFG.

I frequently refer to BFG as an "adult" game.
Why you ask?

1. Typically, the players are not eight year old little shits.

2. The cost is low enough that a real adult can actually afford it without having their parents pay for it.

3. The play style is a good mix of epic explosions and firm tactical thinking. This is the first game I have ever seen people defer the first turn to their opponent.

4. The rules are reasonably static. This means that they don't change often, preventing most codex creep which is rife within "core" games.

5. It is easily modded. Want to use star wars/star trek/bab5/any other space minis in your game? make up some reasonable rules and have at it! The rules are extremely flexible.

Can anon think of other aspects that make this a "grown up's" game?

I think the rules are very complex compared to the supported GW games. I think that tends to scare away the kiddies (who can't exactly grasp 40k either). Also, the lack of a "hero" role in the game definitely discourages kids from playing. Unless you play 'Nids, running up to give your opponent a hug will get you trounced. You're in control of a bunch of floating cities working together to blow up other floating cities from hundreds and thousands of kilometers away in battles that can last for days (in the fluff). If I were eight, nothing about that would seem any more exciting than a traffic jam.

what I like about the current system is that it assures two things

I just started looking into BFG recently and have been gathering components to build some ships. I have a couple ships just to check the scale and size of the bases, but they are both apparently cruisers. Do Battleships use the large flying bases and everything else use the small ones?

Also, thanks /tg/ for being awesome.

>> No.14606578

>> No.14607248

IIRC, battleships have a 50mm base, and cruisers and escorts have a 25mm base. Not sure about the measurements for torpedos and fighters.

>> No.14607444

Is the difference important? I'm a Tau player of 40k, so I started playing BFG by using stickynotes on the dozens of flying bases I get with drones. Does this affect things significantly?

>> No.14607471

The base that came with Yriel's Flagship is the exact same size as a tau drone base, which is why I wanted to ask. I have tons of bases that came with drones and gargoyles, although getting a hold of large bases might be more difficult.

>> No.14607993

Well, having the proper diameter base is important; while all weapon ranges are measure from centre point to centre point, there are a lot of area effect weapons and the like which take hold if they pass through or touch any portion of the base.

This is important for properly resolving torpedoes, fighter/bomber attacks, collisions with asteroids and other phenomena, and boarding. You can probably get away with using whatever size bases you want for the first few games, but the size difference is pretty important for the more advanced rules, as it means battleships have a harder time evading torpedoes, for example, due to their larger base size.

Still it's not super crucial that the bases sizes are exact and on the dot if you're playing friendly games, just make sure it's consistent.

>> No.14608038

yeah, BFG jsut uses the standard GW flying bases.
the small ~30mm(I think don't have one at hand to measure) one for all ships except those with 10 or more hits and 3 or more shields (usually just battleships) which use the large GW flying base (60mm if I remember right)

Despoiler-Class Battleship with chaos warmaster, CSM crew with chosen terminators, and Mark of Khorne (x1) (565 pts)
Slaughter-Class Cruiser with Mark of Khorne and CSM crew (x4) (215 pts each)
Idolater Class Raider (x1) (45 pts)

That's not really the problem, there is certainly enough guns and short-range firepower is one of IN's smallest worries.

The problem is that it's not really different from other IN lists, they could have for example made a list with grand cruisers replacing battlecruiser or something novel like that. "IN with no carriers" ends up too similar to existing fleets since IN isn't carrier-dominated fleet in the first place, and ALL of its carriers cannot be taken away or ordnance-based fleets will eat it.

>> No.14611967

Well, yes and no. Any imperial player worth their salt will take at least LC8 to cover their bases and prevent being overwhelmed.

This fleet is based on the idea of "Fuck their couch! we got GUNZ!"

Still, nothing new.
