I've been thinking about getting into the actual tabletop for awhile, since I've played all the games, know all the fluff, read the books, Dark Heresy every now and then. The only thing is I know absolutely nothing about organizing an army, building it, painting it, ect. I'm obviously going guardsmen, just asking for any tips before I pour money into them.

Nomatter what though, this is my commander unit.

>> No.13905109

well you're in luck, that's the type i'm most familiar with.

first step: two company command squads. a good place to start out getting those is the battleforces. and they come with combat squads and heavy weapon squads.

when making the heavy weapons, lascannons are your best pals for armor plinking. save the other weapons, because you can get spare bases and custom make weapons teams with a little fiddling.

second, armored sentinels are damn nice support units to tie up a dedicated enemy assault unit in combat while your squishy guardsmen sit back and fire from cover with orders at what's unengaged

>> No.13905123

actually, guard special characters are usually ass garbage. he's one of the few who arent. four orders issued per turn at 24 inches can be GODMODE in the right circumstances, his tactical genius rule notwithstanding

yep. also, there are some things that you should just steer clear of. dont give a guardsman a sniper rifle, he will only fail at using it and make your regiment immobile for the privelege.

use ratlings. they cost the same and come with all the relevant rules to making a sniper team a damn bit useful

also: commander chenkov and his conscript circus of pain can make an opponent cry

Only issue withholding being the very fact that that can easily run into over a hundred models. Max being...eh, accounting for the infantry squads within all six troop slots...hm. 450 Models. That's accounting for the Command Squads, all the regular Infantry Squads and the 6 full Conscript Platoons.

Considering 300 of those are Conscripts that with Chenkov you're looking at a mob that makes even Orks cry.

>> No.13905222

yeah, ogryns are fucking garbage.
if for nothing more than they cost ~20$ for every damn model.

i wouldn't bother, you get a sentinel in each battleforce, and armored sentinels are even harder to clear out of an assault than ogryns for comparable cost of points

And to comment once more before I shut the hell up, I'm not sure if you can order Conscripts but your looking at what, 900 Lasgun shots within 12 inches? Sure, your going to miss a lot with how shitty Conscripts are, but even then that will bring some pain.

Of course, the only real problem is you need to have at least some anti-armor, but with the sheer hoard of conscripts, your bound to get a "Death or Glory" result in your favor.

mechanized veterans for IG are godly. i used to play almost all infantry IG, then tried out mech. i felt kinda dirty, chimeras are just so good. and then 5 vets can fire out without making vehicle open topped.

the meta for 40k at the moment is mech is king. vehicles are much harder to kill than they were the previous editions, and the costs for most of the vehicles have gone down.

i do have a soft spot for my foot sloging infantry so i have my 6th troop slot filled with a foot platoon with 5 vets backing them up.

dont really know anything about artillery or armored sorry.

>> No.13905267

>> No.13905302

yeah. see what i was saying about sentinels is they're front armor 12, and against a walker in CC you only ever hit the front armor. meaning, an enemy has to be a BAMF before they can even glance one of these bastards armor, and melta bombs and krak grenakes and what have you only ever hit on a 6 because lolwalker. they aren't necessarily hand to hand killing machines, but they can really tarpit most units, and can pack some good weaponry to boot.

I've thought about adding him before instead of Chenkov. I'm the Witch Hunter player that mentioned using Chenkov.

A lot of people I play bring enough fire power to silence my tanks, and taking more tanks (think Immolator Spam) doesn't solve the problem much. Swarms of respawning conscripts have worked wonders against all sorts of opponents, but I want to see if outflanking will also help. On paper it should be good at distracting, base taking and tank removal, but I'd like to test it out first hand.

It'd be nice if the Ultramarines decided to do something about it, with their powerful empire and since they never do anything anyway. And they live next door to them to. Fucking lazy smurfs...

Well, fuckers are sitting on dozens of well equipped IG regiments and Naval fleets, and they themselves never ever do shit, so I thought, hey maybe they could do something?
Because all those troops only get to see action every 500 odd years, when the Tyranids or something like that come by. It's not like Ultramar is in a threatened area of the galaxy.

Allright. How about a nice Black Templar crusade coming by the Tau Empire? How well do you think they'd do? (take int account the Templars have rather huge fleets. It's not about groundforces. In the universe of the 40 millennium, the Tau are the most impressive. With their Greater Good, all enemies and allies alike cannot not help but gaze up on the noble concept of the Greater Good. The Kroot, once being the savage people, are now regarded as scholars in livestock. The Vespid, once known for being the mindless insects, now work under the Tau as translators, known for being able to communicate to any species in their own language.

Every Tau knows of their divine empire. The Eldar, the ones who would usually look down on any other species, are said to be in such awe of the Tau civilization that they would take away their own souls, feeding the god Tzeentch, both knowing they can never be magnificent as the Tau.

actually thats pretty much Canon.

the tau are not that numerous that they could hold off a fully planned invasion into their territories for long. thats why they try to coerce people into helping them rather than going the steamroller route the IoM favours.

even though i know a lot of fa/tg/uys don't really consider them Canon the first Cain book makes mention that they look to the long plan and will happily pull back if it means they can come back at a later date when things are more suitable to a diplomatic takeover rather than outright war.

they might have awesome tech but sadly for our little bluies they lack the numbers and the warp capability to do much to the big bad universe

>> No.13911321

So this one time, back when I was with D company before they all got blown up - so, like, two weeks ago - anyway, this was then, and we had some of the kindest shit you could ever fucking believe. I mean, like, they sent it up and yeah, yeah, they say EVERYTHING they send us is the good Brish Cumbian shit but half the time you know it's just some brick they found somewhere, I mean, you'd have to do nothing with, like, all of BC but grow weed if you were gonna really supply the whole fuckin' Cadian Guard with it, right? There's, like, a lot of us. Like, you know, all of us. But this time I'm pretty sure it actually was what they said it was and it was KIND. So anyway we were ALL fucked up, like, it was so nice, man - nothing like some good bud for getting your mellow on, you can just like shoot space bugs all day and not give a /shit/, you get in the /zone/, man. I mean, you just don't know until you've done it, man. Like, have you ever looked at the back of a 'nid on weed? Yeah, me neither, 'cause, like, that's a heresy. Anyway, my point is, we were /stoned/ and the commissar decided he had the munchies

well, we all did

as soon as he said it we were all like EMPEROR'S TITS ME TOO

But here's the problem, right, like, there was TOTALLY this convenience store like two blocks away, and they probably had, like, all kinds of shit, maybe we could get Slurpees, right? But, like, that was two blocks away, like, behind a bunch of xenos and chaos and shit or whatever it is we're supposed to be shooting. I don't know maybe today it's Astartes for some reason, ours not to question why and all that shit

So we're like daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn

Anyway I like to do like half cherry and half cola and if I didn't do it myself nobody else would bother and I'd end up with, like, a blue one

So the SRT gets assembled and we get sent out and like IMMEDIATELY like THE INSTANT we leave cover Jaxin's head explodes, and for a second we're all like EMPEROR'S HOLY BALLSACK THAT'S NOT COOL (man nothing harshes your mellow like heads blowing up 'cause like half the time a fucking, like, daemon or a space ghost or whatever those are comes crawling out of what's left of the dude's neck, and that is a MAJOR buzzkill) but yeah he just got shot so that was okay, nobody liked him anyway, and it was his fault for being, like, so tall that his head stuck up

I said Navigator, not Astropath numbnuts. Astropaths are comm units. And Navigators can detect ships, planets, asteroids, everything. They're called bloody Navigators for a reason. In the Eye of Terror, they might not, but they'd bloody well know when it'd come out of the warp, it's one of the most ancient ships around, that thing's gonna have a huge psychic signature.

So no, Abbadon will never make it out of the eye without the Imperium knowing. That is to say, the Planet Killer wont. Abbadon can take a Hell Talon and fly off, presumably.

>> No.13911384

I typed the wrong word, ostracization commences, blah blah.

And that's not how it works. The Imperium weren't waiting everywhere for the Planet Killer in the Gothic War, did they? No, they weren't. There's too much fucking background noise in the Warp to track something as small as a ship, even in the Planet Killer.

No, but during the Gothic war, the Navy was a tad busy, now they have the Eye cordoned off and only Chaos ground troops to deal with. You bet they're keeping their eyes open for anything trying to leave or enter the Eye.

That isn't to say there isn't any background noise, but Navigators can detect planets from a sector away. A Navigator aboard a patrol vessel near the Eye will certainly pick up on the sudden appearance of the most massive ship in the segmentum.

Unless, you know, it's on the other "side" of the Eye? And a planet is a damn-sight bigger than the Planet-Killer, with far more warp-noise than a singular ship.

There are too many ways for the Planet Killer, powerful and hunted as it is, to slip out of the Eye of Terror undetected. There's still a ground-war on Cadia with the forces of Chaos controlling roughly 60% of the ground, and most of the fleet's attention is making sure that they don't escape, or on providing orbital support.

Besides, there's nothing in the fluff to suggest a Navigator can scan and identify a ship from hundred or thousands of light years away. By that self-serving assumption, I will make one of my own - Abaddon can have a couple Sorceror's whip up a spell to cloak his ship from Imperial detection and allow him to ride the ripples and eddies of the Warp all the way to, I dunno, the Calixis Sector.

> Actually, they do pose a threat. But to themselves as well.

That's supposed to be what makes a Black Crusade so bad. Normally Chaos fights everyone, itself included. A Black Crusade is when they all get together and say "well that was fun, but now it's time to go fuck over the Imperium." It's supposed to be a serious threat because it's a time when Chaos puts aside its internal struggles and actually focuses on the Imperium.

> They still pose a threat, even if only indirectly, because they are sufficient a threat to keep a huge part of the Imperial warmachine focused on Cadia and the Eye. Same with the Maelstrom.

Except that all the other supposed threats to the Imperium are kind of in the same boat. Tyranids? Never show up in force, and the ones that are never enough. Necrons, same deal. They actually get used as target practice by local PDF forces in more recent fluff. Orks? Always there, in the background, never changing. And they have a similar thing going with Armageddon. Eldar? The most pathetic, they pretty much never win anything, the gritty and determined human hero always manages to defy fate and win by wanting it hard enough, rendering all the Eldar predictive powers useless.

So keeping the Imperium forces tied down in one place doesn't actually matter because there is nothing to capitalize on it.

>> No.13911846

> And do you really want a setting where half the universe is rulled by chaos? Really?

No, I just want them to be able to actually win for a change. Hell, not even half the time, just some of the time. Abaddon, the Chaos Legions, the Black Crusades, and so on have been reduced to the point where they're essentially a running joke. I would like them to actually be a threat instead of just being written off with "oh, they'll never breach Cadia. It's the best defended planet in 40k, it would be retarded if it was ever successfully attacked." Like in >>13911565

You do know that, in the fluff, the Imperium regularly loses planets to Chaos, Orks, Tyranids and even occasionaly Tau? I can think of at least a 12 BL novels where the Imperium loses worlds, fair enough, the rest depict them as winning. Codexes have references to planets lost and others conquered as well.

The Imperium usually wins in the fluff it's depicted in, but it does lose. Then again, it's the most powerful force in the entire galaxy. It's lost many systems to the Tyranid fleets, several dozen more to the Tau, and many lost to Chaos in all corners of the Imperium. Why do you think things like the Macharian, Sabbat and Damocles crusades are launched? To conquer new worlds, to regain lost ones, etcetera. You are wrong, and you know it.

>> No.13911905

Look, bud. I can feel your anger, but look at our point of view too. We reached the limit of our Imperium ten thousand years ago, while Chaos just really began to make a difference. We are dying old coots, okay?

No matter how many times we beat the Orks, we will never beat the Orks. No matter how many times we kill chaos and heretics, they will never be defeated. Nor the Tau, or Nids, or Eldar (who are in a worse situation, actually), or Necron or whatever.
The Imperium can't do shit anymore, just hold the fucking ground. Don't take that from us as well.
