[ERROR] No.13435121 [Reply] [Original] [4plebs] [archived.moe]

Has /tg/ played this? One of my players is buying it, and I'm going to look into holding a few one-offs with it.

Worth it?

>> No.13435184

Nobody has any opinion at all on this book?

>> No.13435224

I'm stunned /tg/ hasn't heard of this.

>> No.13435237

/tg/ only plays exalted. Sorry fag.

>> No.13435254

>>13435237
Are you comparing it to exalted?
Might this be an Exalted without shitty rules?

>> No.13435257

>>13435237
Well I'll be.

>> No.13435261

IT'S...INTERESTING.

IT GOES AT THINGS FROM NEW ANGLES, WHICH I LIKED, BUT I'LL BE HONEST I COULDN'T FUCK MYSELF TO READ THROUGH IT WITH TIGHT SCRUTINY.

NOTHING SUPER-BROKEN JUMPED OUT AT ME (IN EITHER DIRECTION), BUT I MAY BE WRONG.

>>13435261
Well, seeing as you're the only one with a coherent opinion of it...

What do you suggest for campaign ideas based on it?

>> No.13435288

It's written by Monte Cook.

The guy largely responsible for 3rd/3.5 edition D&D being the way it was.

It's full of his bullshit, both good and bad. If you liked his other stuff should give you a good idea of whether you'll like this one.

>> No.13435296

read it like some things with the setting but I just cant stand class and level progression games (though I do take a bit of isnpiration from the rest of it).

>> No.13435301

I like the setting. Some of the classes are trying too hard to be "different," but some like the Witch are genuinely interesting.

Some of the races are good too, though I just can't get into the Sibbecai or their fey. The cat-people are well-done cat-people though, and I like the two contrasting "dragon" races.

I think I have most of the stuff that was published for the setting in .pdf form, Malhavoc kind of struck a cord for me so I tried to collect them.

>>13435288
Do you think it'll be compatible with Pathfinder? A lot of my players are aspergian clinging to it, but I want the material.

>> No.13435328

Nothing left of it on /rs/.

Found http://www.mediafire.com/?bo4c433kua64ceg by some googlin', no idea if that's it.

In theory both are OGL. I haven't taken a close enough look at Pathfinder, but from my understanding they take different approaches toward "balancing" the magic system. Arcana suggests restricting Arcana-magic to Arcana-classes, but warns that magic is more powerful than the normal 3e PHB. Something to keep in mind.

>> No.13435354

>>13435305

No idea, been a long time since I read it.

Maybe? I wanna say it took advantage of the whole OGL thing, so it works with 3.5.

But I honestly can't remember. Anyway, I have nothing else to contribute and my own thread to watch die slowly and unloved, so later.

I'll upload it if people want.

>> No.13435495

Played it. Loved it.

Did not run it, though, and it's been a while.

Pathfinder classes might be a little stronger than the ones in Arcana. Some of the things (LOL SWORDAXES) seem kind of over the top. But I love the way the magic works, and the races are all great examples of fantasy races without the standard halfling/elf/dwarf fare.

As for campaign ideas, working as an agent for one of the many political sides is always a strong option. Track down the rebellion or smuggle arms for them, report giant weaknesses back to the dragon's servants or do recon work for giants. Then there's the usual Indianna Jones fare of finding artifacts from when the dragons first ruled the place. And, of course, with the macguffin of the eggs as a possibility, you can always do that.

I never really did more than give this a light reading but it seemed like their version of the fighter the warmain is actually worse than than a regular fighter.

I've used a Totem Warrior in a normal 3.5 game with no issues.

The balance of the Diamond Throne setting is slightly higher than default 3.x, by about one feat worth. It could be adapted to Pathfinder fairly easily, though you want to use the OPs edition instead of the earlier one (black cover "Arcana Unearthed").

For those of you with a miniatures fixation, there are minis of the PC races and a few of the creatures.

This game is where the Racial Paragon classes of WotC's UA came from, by the way. You can indeed become more "racy" instead of advancing in a career class. It's how the PC race of Giants go from the high end of Medium to Large. A second tier allow Giants to attain Huge size, though that's a six level diversion and a deal with dragons...

>> No.13438373

Pretty cool stuff.

>> No.13438403

Fuck Monte Cook and fuck Arcana Evolved. And yes, I've played it.

Here's a link, before you start bitching at me.

These same design philosophies permeate all his work at the time, Arcana Evolved especially, as it was his personal pet project version of 3.5.

As long as none of this bothers you, I'm sure you'll enjoy the game.

Sorry to be one of those thread shitters.
