10549462 No.10549462 [Reply] [Original] [4plebs] [archived.moe]

ITT we discuss our opinions on what makes for good armor design.

When thinking about the general "look" for a setting, everything from the armor that's available to the heroes to the sort of thing the faceless goons they're expected to trounce wear really affect how players will come to view the setting.

What styles do you feel are eternal classics, and what strike you as played out and hackneyed? Is reinvention a good thing, or is it a sense of familiarity that holds your interest?

>> No.10549500

It really depends on the setting itself. Played out and hackneyed works really well for certain settings, after all.

My personal favorite armor designs are utilitarian ones that don't scream "LOOK AT ME, I'M A VIDEOGAME CHARACTER" or "THE ARTIST WAS REFERENCING HULK HOGAN WHEN HE SKETCHED ME". But again, everything works well, under certain circumstances. Just take a look at 40k. Good luck getting those retarded armor designs to work in any other universe.

>> No.10549523

I like to start with realistic designs of armor (usually taken direct from real-life styles) as a base, and depending on the game in question, adding a few fantastic/impractical touches for lolz.

As for specific styles? I like full and half plate best. Lamellars are kickass, too. There's also something to be said about a good old set of boiled leathers.

I like armor with nearly invisible visors or eyes. If being "faceless" is impossible with the technology level, than some kind of menacing, inhuman monoeye is also acceptable.

To me, good armor design in a sci-fi or modern setting depends a lot on the technology level and combat role. Armor intended for espionage tends to be form-fitting and less protective so much as designed to reduce clothing noise and dampen heat/electric signatures. Armor intended for tactical combat, especially in urban environments, should be bulky, but still flexible enough to allow a normal human range of movement.

Of course, I'm a /m/an, so armored battlesuits in sci-fi urban combat are very appealing to me. They could even be small mecha and I'd like them anyway, but that doesn't strike me as "armor" so much as a vehicle.

I like my power armor to look pretty 'realistic.' Like something you'd see used in today's future.

Pic semi-related. It's a bit too bulky for my tastes but it looks fairly realistic - much like a modern soldier he has to lug a lot of gear around (one of the benefits of powered armor is it lets you do that easily, too!) and clearly has pouches and shit for magazines and whatnot.

None of that silly shit where the guy has his armor and gun and nowhere to put his spare mags.

We've used ID tags for a long time now. So, I don't see them going away. They're a quick identifier.

And by design, one can be left with the body and one collected. It's part of why they come in pairs.

Additionally, the number of beads on the long chain is 365, and 52 on the short chain. So if you are lost or captured, you can keep track of the time.

You guys are just nonconformist fags.

Aside from the DECORATIONS, the standard 40K Space Marine armor, especially those with the modern good pauldron sizes (and visibility) is one of the most practical designs out there. Both a 40K marine proportioned and one with normal human proportions count here. Rounded shapes to better deflect shots yet carry a simple, elegantly mass-produced, design aesthetic. The large pauldrons appropriately protect the soldier from the direction he will get hit most from when he is in a shooting stance. The only thing not properly armored is the crotch area.

And just look at the fucking Beakie. You do not mess with Beakie.

The most important thing that makes nice armour designs stick in my head is simplistic outwardly design aimed at function. Not too many frills or doodads sticking out all over the place, everything you can see has a purpose.

Next thing is helmet design, a large unobstructed field of view is important, but that at the same time usually ruins the appearance in my opinion. Now you can two ways, just ignore that factor and accentuate the eyes like helghast designs or try to incorporate it and make a face covering visor that looks cool (usually darkened and elongated to give the face a empty feel). Or just forgo it completely and use a helmet without covering the face.

Oh what the shit. What's the source on this one? I remember seeing a different suit from, I assume, the same... thing.

Earlier in the thread there are two others.

I think they were on dA or some concept art forum. But the ones I have saved were from... a /tg/ thread D:

Sadly, I don't recognize the signature off hand.

And image limit.

Shall I start a new thread?
