10226301 No.10226301 [Reply] [Original] [4plebs] [archived.moe]

This is probably too early in the day, but I just wanted to get a sense of what period in Rokugan history you will all be playing once 4th comes out?

First Day of Thunder
Clan Wars
Scorpion Clan Coup
Second Day of Thunder
Hidden Emperor
Fall of Onnotangu
Spirit Wars
4 Winds Era
Chagatai's Ambition

>> No.10226342

I will probably be going pre-Scorpion Clan Coup into the Coup/Clan war, to introduce some new players to the setting.

Also, did everybody see the new Clan site previews?

>> No.10226536

I had not, but I did just check out the clan stores. Wouldn't mind picking up a clan hoodie.

>> No.10226561

You should check them out. I expect they'll be our last morsels before the release.

The clan shops are cool, and the hoodies and caps are going up in price. I kind of want a Lion hoodie, but I'm just not sure. I'm not really a hoodie kind of guy, y'know?

>> No.10226707

Where are the clan site previews exactly? L5R.com isn't the easiest site to navigate if they are there.

And I understand. I'm actually a hoodie guy, but I'd give my left eye for that Dairya "I am my own master" shirt from Hidden Emperor.

>> No.10226912

Well, the Lion Clan one is at www.thelionclan.com, buried in their RPG forum.

To get to them more easily, go to www.alderac.com/forum and then hit the 4th Edition RPG subforum--they're not on the main site at all, but there's a stickied topic in the subforum with links.

>> No.10226947

Oh, and just Ctrl F for 4th to find the subforum.

Those aren't bad, although as a Unicorn fan, I was a bit depressed at the emptiness of the forum, and now I'm trying to remember the names of the old clan sites from 10 years ago.

>> No.10227205

Clan sites vary in their activity, content and frequently change hands. The official Lion site from 10 years ago is still up. I think you might still be able to find the Deathseeker (which was a major news source 10 years ago).

>> No.10227255

Oh man, I remember going to the Deathseeker daily. I hope I don't find any of my old posts. God those were awful.

I want to say there was also a Dragon clan site called The Thunder Mountains that was pretty well done.

I've also always wanted to run a game where the PCs were Thunders, with the real possibility of failure on the Day of Thunder, leading directly into Thousand Years of Darkness.

Wow, sounds like everyone prefers the Hantei on the throne.

First or Second Day of Thunder?

>> No.10227513

My first character ever was a Fox Clan shugenja.

I do admit to huge nostalgia goggles for the old days (fuck the Mantis clan).

>> No.10227698

The storyline gets kind of weird after the Second Day of Thunder. I wouldn't be averse to running a campaign in the Toturi I or Four Winds era, but I would probably diverge from canon pretty quickly. I'd also consider running one in the era of Toturi IV or V or something like that. But there are lots of historical eras with enough background to start you off-- Gozoku, Steel Chrysanthemum, etc.

Also, Second DoT, the first is a really different world, and the point would be to make and build up their characters to be Thunders.

>> No.10227843

You can find the current sites off of the main L5R site. You just go to the Clans under the pages tab.

>> No.10227847

Either Clan Wars or Dawn of the Empire.

Thousand Years of Darkness would be cool, too.

>> No.10229036

Read up on Rolugan 3000. It was never completed, but gave you a great set up for the Third Day of Thunder.

But get rid of the whole Mech concept. Keep Unicorn on motorcycles, Crab with Tanks.

Tips for new DMs. Make the players feel like the cogs they are and make them earn that cog. If a player says he wants to be the greatest Kakita Duelist, make him earn in, don't let him just have that as his background. Have him duel constantly.

Also, remember that characters are not immortal. If they fart in front of their lord, they should commit seppuku before their lord can even smell it. And they should be happy to do this.

Lastly, for everyone thinking about making their players Thunders, everyone involved should know that 7 people are chosen, but not all 7 are coming back.

>> No.10229302

No one ever answered me when I asked if the Mantis clan should now have a Thunder. They're now a Great clan and Yoritomo is in Tengoku thanks to the Thunder Dragon. While he isn't a Kami, it at least gives him the same status as them.

So on the Third Day of Thunder, if a Mantis came with the other thunders would he/she be allowed or not?

And not related; but what does a shugenja do if challanged? Like some bushi badmouths their clan and they challenge him; but to what?

>> No.10229438
File: 49 KB, 306x428, Naka Tokei.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google] [report]

>So on the Third Day of Thunder, if a Mantis came with the other thunders would he/she be allowed or not?

This is up to the GM, but I would not allow a Mantis Clan Thunder. I would, however, allow the Mantis to play a significant part in the Third Day of Thunder. Give them the title Child of Storms, and it is the Mantis Clan's duty to defeat or engage Fu Leng's Champion in order for the others to confront the Dark God. What a Tweest if the Dark Champion is one of the Thunders.

>but what does a shugenja do if challanged?

But in all seriousness, if two shugenja challenge each other, they duel with MAGIC!

If a Bushi is foolish enough to challenge a shugenja, usually the yojimbo will participate in the duel. If the shugenja does not have a yojimbo, then expect the issuer to be burned alive. You generally don't want to fuck with shugenja on equal terms.

Rokugan 2000. I actually didn't mind the half-magic mechs.

>> No.10229946

If they were fighting Yoritomo no Oni, which was the corrupted city of Otosan Uchi, then yes, using Mechs makes sense. But the whole concept is so ridiculous, I wouldn't dare throw that at my players.

Unless I turned the campaign into G Gundam level manliness.

>> No.10229975

I think it's really easy to screw up on the feel of seppuku. If you fart in front of your lord, your lord will probably just laugh. Remember, you are your lord's property and you should not be wasteful with yourself. If you actually screw up, you better be ready to fall on your own sword. If you screw up in a minor way, then be prepared to make lesser amends.

Also, if I made players Thunders, I wouldn't warn them ahead of time that some of them were going to die. If they can't figure out that that's what happens when you go up against a god with unlicensed nuclear accelerators strapped to their backs, that's their problem.

Also, usually the descendant of Shinsei goes with them.

>> No.10230044

And the Kami Togashi in disguise. Sneaky bastard.

>> No.10230104

Well, that was only the one time. Shinsei went, and then subsequently the Hooded Ronin went. Togashi only went the once.

>> No.10230121

We're playing in the Current timeline at the moment. Most of us have nearly died at one point in the campaign, with my shugenja getting hit so hard that I was partially severed from the elements and couldn't speak to the kami, and had to have a huge ritual involving dozens of shugenja to restore my connection to them. After all was said and done, I taught them one of the spells I had that was pretty much exclusive to me, which was a yojimbo made up of a certain element, depending on what your preferred element was.

I love being able to create my own spells. I make so many friends and enemies in the clans from it.

>> No.10230169

Going to run pre-coup again in the near future.

With 1E. There's no reason to think 4E won't be just like 3E - shit in a silk stocking. Same writers, same blind editors, a similarly fake list of playtesters.

>> No.10230347

Togashi HAD to go the second time. He had Isawa's 12th scroll in his chest. He knew he was going to die. Its just a shame his clan's Thunder was that madbitch Hitomi.

Obviously you haven't been checking up on the Design Diaries. They realized the mistakes of 3rd, and have gone about to change them - specifically free raises don't fall out of the sky, the Tsuruchi aren't their own Tier, and they are distancing themselves from the CCG so you can set it during any period. This is the reason for my initial post.

This is also why dead clans like the Boar and Snake are provided in the main book.

>> No.10230382

I dunno. Both 3E and 4E add some incentives to taking higher skills that 1st edition didn't have. Also, Iaijutsu duels have been fixed for 4th--the mechanics in 1st edition had a bunch of unnecessary CCG holdover mechanics. Plus, legitimate courtier schools for all the different clans. Grapple rules for 4th look really clean. And character generation runs on the same rules as experience points, so there's not reason to stack up on traits and skills that are already high.

>> No.10230428

Not necessarily. They could have removed the 12th Black Scroll before or something like that. Not that there wasn't a good reason for him to go, or that there's any reason for him to not go, just that I don't think it sets a precedent.

That is to say, if you were going to run a 3rd Day of Thunder, you'd only need Thunders, a Shinsei and a bad guy.

>> No.10230723

Except it can't be that easy. In the two previous Days of Thunder recorded by Humanity, the clans put aside their differences, and in the second day united (except for that slight pause where Yoritomo threatened to attack the unified clans unless they granted the Mantis Major Clan status.)

You need to have a reason for all of the clans to unify in order to overcome the greater evil.

An interesting story idea would be the coming Third Day of Thunder. With the knowledge of this day, the forces of Jigoku have been setting the clans against each other (You can do the standard pairings: Unicorn/Lion, Dragon/Phoenix, Crab/Crane, or something crazy like Mantis Airships/Unicorn Armored Cavalry Divisions, Crab Mobile Fortresses/Phoenix Technokami, Dragon/Scorpion street warfare, Lion/Crane wars).

The players must race against the clock and throughout the war torn Empire in order to unify the clans against the corruption belt of The City of the Lost, Shinomon Forest, Ruins of Otosan Uchi and then escort the Thunders to the final battleground.

Interesting twist: the least likely PC is actually his clans Thunder and the only Thunder in the party.

but I have not picked up this game since the First Edition. I was a loyal crab player but back then, EVERY one at the local hobby shop was running either a Crane or Lion deck. Maybe was too young to really appreciate the game, but can one expect Crab to have been brough up to balance?

>> No.10230915

I don't think the clans had too many differences in the Dawn of the Empire era. Everyone was either busy setting things up or warring with Fu Leng.

That being said, I don't think you can have a campaign based on only those elements, but if you're looking at the things that mystically have to happen/line up to have a Day of Thunder, that's what you need--7 Thunders, Shinsei and a bad guy.

Rokugan 2000 actually has the clans being purposefully thrown into turmoil (and everyone thinking that another Day of Thunder won't happen because of a previous war against the Shadowlands and the sacrifice of the Dragon Clan). It also does a good job of having strange and unusual Thunders.

That being said, if I were having a PC be a Thunder, I would do my best to have every PC be a Thunder.

>> No.10231010

Yes. Lion and Dragon are probably the strongest right now, but balance is much better as a whole than it was around Imperial Edition.

Crab seem to be middle of the pack this year, judging by regional (Kotei) results.

>> No.10231246

Well you're talking about 2 different things: the CCG and the RPG. As for the CCG, no idea. No one plays in Miami, so I've been out of the loop and can't help you out if a Crab deck is any decent.

As for the RPG, its split into a Rock/Paper/Scissors style archetypes for Bushi in Tough, Fast, Strong. Hida are the Toughest; Hiruma are Fast (but not as fast as Tsuruchi or Bayushi).

At the dawn of the empire, there wasn't rampant hatred, but there were still some issues between the newly formed clans. Matsu probably thought she was the best fighter and would have no problem proving it to everyone, and I'm sure Utaku would have clamored for the chance to prove her wrong. I'm sure the proto Crane were outraged at Hiruma not wearing pants.

But yes, I will concede that ultimately the Day of Thunder needs those three elements. Actually you don't even need 7 humans. As the Kenku had participated in previous Days of Thunder prior to humanity's rise, it would not be out of the question to have a Nezumi Thunder.

And I did like the idea that the Lion Clan Thunder was an Actor.

But I'd have to see. I like the idea that only one of the players is a Thunder, and now its the rest of the party's mission to keep him alive until the confrontation.

Well, who wouldn't? The Monkey Clan is awesome.

Ah well, might as well give in and talk some more.

So I'm the guy who's been posting as the unicorn wife, recently, with the troubles over her scorpion husband. Recently, it's been discovered that he's... quite heavily tainted, has probably tainted her, has made deals with oni, etc.

This had to be dealt with, and very soon. He was away for a few days on 'clan business', doing what I don't know. But my character was there, and she had many of her allies and close friends from her days before her marriage. Not to mention enough clout to ask for backup, after presenting the evidence to her Lord. I recieved a number of Moto Bushi, and some shugenja for my troubles.

We waited several days. My husband returned home. I acted as if nothing was different, up until he entered his personal room.

I'd like to say we surprised him, that we held him down and interrogated him, but I would be lying. Tainted as he was, he was still a Scorpion. He killed two of the Moto faster than they could blink, as the rest of us moved in to assist. He avoided me in the ensuing combat, slicing first the Moto and Shugenja, and then moved on to my friends. Oddly enough, he killed none of them as he did the Moto, only knocking them out--my closest friends and allies. A Crane Courtier whom I had grown up with. A Lion Bushi who had saved my life, and had his saved in turn. A Mantis Shugenja, one of the Moshi, who had known my mother and been friends with her. Even the Ronin to whom we had no official ties, but who still through some dogged sense of justice had followed us after we saved his life.

>> No.10235534

Dripping poison is terrible. It requires such a convoluted means to administer, requires a long time to prepare, AND isn't deadly enough to justify itself.

>> No.10235541

But when it was just him and I, he lowered his arms. He could not strike me, he said, because he loved me. All he had done, he had done for me. That we would be together, forever. He had turned to the Taint, to the Shadowlands, because he knew that I did not love him, but hoped to make me.

All he had done, he had done out of love.

I killed him without a word. I alerted my Lord, who alerted the Scorpion.

I also invited a Kuni Inquisitor, in order to assess myself. It was as I feared. He had tainted me, greatly, deeply. It would not effect me or become active until someone performed the correct maho ritual, but it was still there. But there had been rumors, recently, of a cave somewhere in the Shadowlands, made of Jade so powerful and so pure that nothing could taint it, and that meditating within it could remove all taint, no matter how deeply held it was. That would be my goal.

>> No.10235570

My Lord wishes to celebrate me as a hero of Rokugan. He has allready said that he will send word of my exploits to the Emperor. I have asked him not to, yet. There is nothing to celebrate. I am tainted, deeper than the Inquisitor had ever seen. And though I have killed one threat to Rokugan, many more await. And I may be one. I want no recognition for doing my duty. It was done, and I have leave to try to find this Cave of Jade.

My friends are all coming with me. Even the Crane. I wish they would stay behind, but they trust me and will not let me go alone. And they have the leave of their Lords to follow. I will not stop them.

We leave for the Shadowlands tommarrow. I am bringing only what I require. Horse, weapons, armor, and supplies. We have been gifted a large number of jade fingers, in the hopes that it will be enough. I expect to purchase more when we reach the Wall, before we continue on.

Part of me hopes I will be able to return. Most of me expects I will not.

I think you'd be better of requesting the use of either the Nemuranai in possession of the Crane or the spell ritual Jade-something, both of which remove the taint completely at the cost of your life.

Getting to you could have been the plan of the Shadowlands all along, and the Scorpion husband was just a means to an end.

Entering the Shadowlands could turn you into this. Death would be preferable.

While I suppose that is true, it just seems... I don't know, there's a feeling that we need to find this cave. If nothing else, I will make sure the Moshi in the group knows this ritual, or at least is able to learn it, for if things go terribly wrong in the Shadowlands. And you're worse of Lost. Still, I can't argue with "a feeling that we need to do this". Just be prepared for the worst and make sure that your friends are prepared to kill you before you embark on this quest.

If you have the influence, then you might want to bring along an outsider who doesn't know you, like a Witch Hunter or a Crab. If the worst comes to pass, then your friends might hesitate a moment to long. Having someone who wouldn't hesitate before caving your skull in could be good.

It is a setting very conductive towards storytelling.

Bushi, Utaku Battle Maidens, hands down. I <3 my heavy cavalry.

Scout... probably the crab one, the name I forget off the top of my head because it's late, but they're manly. Living in the shadowlands? Takes balls.

Courtier, definately gonna have to be Yoritomo, I think it is. The mantis ones. They allways get played as Mafia by my group.

And Shugenja again goes to mantis, with the Moshi. Sun-worshipping? Matriarchal? Probably lesbians? Hells yeah.

(Oddly enough, despite having two of my favoriate schools, Mantis is only my second-favoraite clan. I prefer the Unicorn.)

I'm convinced that among the bushi it's mostly taught as a "skill" so that older kids can make fun of the younger ones who don't quite have it down. In our family, it's often one of the first major tests of a young courtier's ability to make excuses for the obviously inappropriate.

Besides, you never know when it'll come up. When no members of other clans are present, always clarify- subtly- what's meant by a challenge of "shooting from horseback". I knew a one-armed Moto once who would always trick people that way... even at sixty years old, he was quite remarkable.
