>Are there really people who think THAC0 is too complicated?

THAC0 was inconvenient and counter intuitive for new players, NOT complicated. On a whole it's better that we've switched to the scaling up d20 system.

That said: you stir memories of when said system of D&D did not have huge inflatable numbers. I kinda miss that.

>Savage Tides. Pretty epic fight.
Pretty epic everything. When I ran it I used the "What happens after" as reason for why 4e fluff came into being.

>Do you, GMs of /tg/, prefer to use premades/modules, or plan out your own scenarios? Do your players lead where the story goes, or do you prefer a bit of railroading?

See you're not actually asking a question. Premade by someone else or premade by you is still premade. Now in ANY give RP session you need to be flexible in case things go off course or it will feel like you are rail roading your players even if your not. The real question is, do you go with the follow? Or do you try and steer them back on track?
Because honestly it never really matters, you ploop "The problem" in front of the PCs and they'll eventually make their way to it. Like a carrot on a stick.

Your players always and at the same time never really lead the story. You give your players choices, they make the decisions, but the thing is... You make all the options in the first place.

>The arbitrary assigning of points while simpler is just frustrating and at least with natural progression the skills you actually use would always improve.

Elder Scroll style is it?

Can't remeber what table top is was but there was this system that had you write which skills you used, and upon a successful check (i think) you got a 1 point of "Skill experience" after you got enough S.Exp that equaled your current rank it leveled up. So 1 rank 1 S.Exp you went to level 2.

It encouraged you to keep trying the skills your were good at, but at later levels it was a little difficult to level up a new skill.

DEAR LOST IN MEDITATION

YOUR FEARS ARE WELL-FOUNDED. THAT WOMAN IS NO DOUBT A DEMON IN DISGUISE. LUCKILY, THERE IS A VERY EASY WAY TO DISPATCH SUCH DEMONS.

THERE IS A LAKE OUTSIDE YOUR HOUSE THAT IS VERY DEEP. CHALLENGE HER TO A SWIM TO THE BOTTOM. YOU WILL SUCCEED AND BOTH OF YOU WILL SERVE FORE- I MEAN SHE WILL BE VANQUISHED.

I always played them as aquatic beholders, but a group of aboleths working together would be some scary shit.

Adding lots of attacks per round can be just as effectively imbla as having absurd amounts of utility. If rogues wer allowed to double the maximum number of skill ranks they were allowed to apply, they would waltz right over everything else too.

Making everything in the game broken doesn't fix the game, it just breaks it more, as we've seen with Exalted. This sort of situation is exactly what the Tomes were released to correct.

And for that matter, these sorts of arguments are exactly why 4th edition was created the way it was; balance issues. The new system fixes it, but in order to do so completely shifted how D&D worked under the new rules.

Sup /tg/

I've hit a bit of a wall with my current character in development. DM is going to be running a Dragonlance setting 3.5 game, in the Age of Mortals, so no Wizards, and we've already got a Sorcerer running so that's filled up. My roomate and I are both playing, and he's running a swashbuckler, and he and I were thinking of co-owning a ship to use in-game, paying hirelings as crew 'till we can get to Leadership at 6th.

Atm, I'm looking at a human based Child of the Sea (fae with aquatic skills and spell-like abilities and such), but I'm at a loss at what to do with the 2 levels I have left after LA.

So, I'd like some help. Each post participating rolls 4d6, dropping the lowest, and the first 6 such posts will be what I use for my stats, come hell or high water. After that, best character suggestion that comes up will be what I run, and if it goes well, I'll make sure to make time for storytiems here.

DEAR READERS OF THIS COLUMN,

IT HAS COME TO MY ATTENTION THAT THE ILLUMINATION PROVIDING THE HEADER FOR MY WORDS OF WISDOM WAS MISTAKENLY OMITTED FROM THE LATEST INSTALLMENT. THE NEWLY PROMOTED COPY EDITOR WISHES TO INFORM YOU THAT WE SINCERELY APOLOGIZE FOR THE MISTAKE, AND THAT IT WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. THE FORMER COPY EDITOR WISHES TO INFORM YOU THAT HE WAS QUITE DELICIOUS WHEN SERVED WITH A TWIST OF LEMON. THE FORGOTTEN DEPICTION OF MY MAGNIFICENT VISAGE IS INCLUDED WITH THIS CORRECTION.

YOURS SINCERELY,

Dear Abby,

I've been on-and-off sleeping with this cute transmutationist who works in the R&D lab. I'm a field operations mage, by the way. The mercenary work has allowed me to mass an empire in liquid assets, but I digress. I recently found out she's an illithid. I'm abjured to the nines, which is why I suspect she hasn't tried to invade my skull one way or another, but there remains the possibility that she isn't after my mind.

Do you have any advice?

Best Regards,
Evoker And Loving It

Dear Abby,

I've recently come into the possession of a halfling farm. Foolish things aren't yet aware it's not just plants were growing, any way I digress. I was thinking of getting my fellow feinds together but I think a simple halfling roast, while a staple of fiendish cuisine, just won't make the impression I need on my superiors. I need something with a certain flair to it, something beyond the ordinary rape and torture that would be sure to impress even my most jaded guests. Any advice?

Sincerely yours,
A Fiendish Farmer
