Oh, you.
Mortarion is still pretty mad about that one.

So a friend of mine recently listened to Mortarion's Heart, an audio book I've not had time to listen to myself. Since the Death Guard have been my only real consistent army since I started playing 40K some twelve years back I asked him to tell me just how the infamous battle between Draigo and Mortarion really went. I share this with you partly because I think his version of the events is worth sharing and also to see if anyone shed light on just how much he was exaggerating.

Spoilers follow:

"So, the Grey Knights, doing their standard 'the ends justify the means' thing provokes Mortarion into launching a crusade. They let him conquer sector after sector all to lure him to Kornovin, one of the few worlds where they could actually kill him permanently. It might have worked except that, true story, the old Supreme Grand Master, Geronitan, forgot to wear a helmet as space marine commanders frequently do. So Mortarion melts his face off.
"So then the council of Grand Masters are like 'well fuck, who should we elect as our new Supreme Grand Master?' One of them shrugs and says 'Well, this Draigo guy is pretty expendable, why not him?' and all the rest of the council give a collective shrug and a 'meh' and thus Draigo is crowned. They also tell him what may or may not be Mortarion's true name, and give him a slap on the back and a 'go git um'.

I share this with you partly because I think his version of the events is worth sharing and also to see if anyone shed light on just how much he was exaggerating.

Spoilers follow:

"So Draigo lands, strikes a pose and challenges Mortarion in front of an army of Grey Knights and a massive host of the Death Guard. Mortarion just looks at him like 'really?' for about five seconds before swatting away Draigo's sword, picking him up by the neck, and very lightly punches him in the face for a full twenty minutes.
Twenty.
Minutes.
"The entire band of Grey Knights just watch in awed silence as Draigo struggles like a drowning child, and the Death Guard just sit there. Finally, after twenty minutes Mortarion takes a short break to shake a cramp out of his hand and Draigo takes the opportunity to magically light Mortarion's cape on fire. Mortarion naturally drops Draigo and proceeds to freak the fuck out because that was his VERY favorite cape, and Draigo sneaks up beside him and whispers Mortarion's true name in his ear.
"Mortarion promptly fucking explodes, Draigo seizes his daemon heart and writes 'Geronitan' on it in magic marker, weakening the primarch.

If this is more or less true I'm not unhappy with the events of Mortarion's Heart. Mortarion didn't get beat down like the codex makes it sound and in the end it was a major loss for the Grey Knights, sacrificing countless worlds and knights in an attempt to kill a primarch, but in the end they can only wound him. So how much truth is there to this?

Magnus goes for Space Wolves: Gets his shit slapped
Mortarion does something: Gets his shit slapped by Kaldor Draigo

They both fail. Your Prince sucks just as bad.
