My players thank me after every session and that's more than enough for me.

Gygax used to let people start as Balrogs before he got tired of /pfg/ tier trash.

For the more experienced GMs and role players, do you ever guide and help new GMs to become good?
Is it an obligation of players to encourage GMs to become better?

Yes. I use a landscape oriented tri-fold screen that allows for custom inserts on both sides of the screen's panels.

Usually I keep some nice art on the outside for the players to look at and set the mood while the interior has assorted charts for quick reference. Any important stat blocks or story beats, locations, NPCs, etc. I keep written on sorted index cards. I also keep my dice (unsurprisingly) and a 1 minute timer behind the screen though I will roll openly if anyone ever expresses doubts about whether or not I am telling the truth.

My current set-up works well but I still experiment to find potentially better configurations.

>"you were in fact RPG characters all along"
Do people actually do this? I joke about such things at the table but that is due to it seeming like a very dumb twist.

I would say such a twist is far from overused due to it being too cringey to do well.

Playing a game with a modern setting and having the PCs all play an RPG sounds like a great way to get some one-shots in and potentially do some foreshadowing.

>Am I wrong for being irritated by this?
Nope. My group situation is similar to yours and while right now our issues are due to changing work schedules I would be very bothered if people flaked for lesser reasons.

In the meantime those of us who can meet do and we merely play a smaller game. It helps that my group rotates the GM roll frequently as everyone knows how to run at least one system. On a related note learning how to balance encounters for smaller groups has been interesting.

The new referee is openly a doppelganger, they transform to look like NPCs or do character voices.
The PCs are all "secretly" playing doppelgangers to haze her.

Picture this:
>you're DMing a game for your friends
>The PCs are faced with a challenge
>they manage to deal with it, but their solution wasn't perfect and led to some loss of resource, like hitpoint damage or using up a magic item for example
>after the game, the players ask you "What was the actual solution to the challenge? What were we supposed to do?"

Do you tell them, /tg/?

here's a couple of ideas

if you plan on adding any kind of 'time fuckery' the players should meet a young adventurer with an easy-to-remember name, and maybe because of the spirit of kindred spirits etc. he gives the party a nice trinket ( like a scratched gold coin or some such ) to remember him by as a fellow adventurer incase he dies in the dungeon. later on, they meet an elderly man that has the same name and says he lost his lucky coin and can't remember what happened to it.. etc.

another idea would be to enter a part of the dungeon where there's a shitton of ghosts, but the catch is that the ghosts shift themselves to look like the dead loved ones of the adventurers and then lead them to their death

my final idea is to walk in on a bunch of skeleton goons taking a break from being skeleton goons and playing a tabletop roleplaying game like pic related. since they aren't on the job they invite the players to join them, and then you'd have a pc rolling dice to see how much their ingame character rolls, essentially playing mini-dnd inside dnd
