I told my players that they could bring any concept they wanted to the table and i'd make it work because the setting is very open and AD&D gives no fucks.

>MFW everyone wanted to play human fighters and elven rangers.

I'd love to have the girl with golem arms.

"Oh man, oh man, fighters are so shit in D&D, but i want to play a fighter anyway!" Says the hopeful player as he prepares his cult to play demonic dice based games. "So, i was thinking we could fix them with all these house rules!" he adds, placing down a giant block of printed paper on the desk, the comic sans text on it merely font size 3.

You flinch as you eye the first page, suggestions like rolling 10d4s for strength and giving the fighter spells called maneuvers fill it to the brim. "What if... What if we play a system that isn't D&D or Pathfinder." you suggest, knowing full well that non-spell casters can be a magnificent force in systems that are properly designed. As soon as your words leave your lips, the room falls silent.

You have committed a sacrilege. How dare you imply that a game not based on D&D could be better crafted? better designed even! What a fool you are! "How can you expect us to learn a whole other system with levels and classes and feats and skills!? Surely, you must be joking!" You raise your voice in defiance, you have read these other systems. The rules are simple, character creation is elegant and the time to be sunk into learning them minimal. But, how can they understand? It has taken them years and dozens of books to understand a mere fraction of the broken system they have been trapped in. There is no escape now. For they fear whatever else they try will take just as long to learn a fraction of. It is a prison without walls.

Quietly, defeated, you sink into your seat. Fear has won.

>OP thinks characters are defined by their class and equipment.

"Listen closely. I'd like to help you, but I can't. I'd like to tell you to take a copy of your policy to Norma Wilcox on... Norma Wilcox, W-I-L-C-O-X... on the 3rd floor, but I can't. I also do not advise you to fill out and file a WS2475 form with our legal department on the 2nd floor. I would not expect someone to get back to you quickly to resolve the matter. I'd like to help, but there's nothing I can do."
