Why do so many people play space marines, /tg/?

I am honestly at a loss. When I look at the 40k list threads, around 75% of the lists posted are space marines. It's insane. Why on earth do you enjoy fielding the blandest, most common, boring ass models that 40k has to offer? MEQ is boring as fuck to play against, and fucking every and their brother has an army of the useless little shits.

And then there's those faggots who play with their space viking yiff marines, their space vampire marines, their space roman marines, their space homosexual marines, their space crusader marines, their spiky eeeeeeviiiiil marines, their completely bland imperial fist marines, their negro marines, their super special daemon hunter marines, and the fucking 30k series which is just 40k marines but with different patterns on the shoulder pads and sillier helmets. Fuck, I'm probably still missing a few versions of the exact same fucking shit over and over again.

Honestly, what is the appeal?

A space marine is walking around with his helmet off, as they are wont to do, and is hit in the face by a round from a .50 cal Barrett. Does he survive or does his head turn to mist?

Is there an army with a shittier aesthetic than the Space Marines? Can you believe that someone actually approved this design for use in a game? They're not just Starship Trooper ripoffs, they're Starship Trooper ripoffs who look like they were drawn by 5 year olds. When I think of power armored warriors I don't think of this cartoon garbage.

I dunno - why not just use the 40k system, but just have them only using muskets or swords for the first few sessions, as they fight in a civil war that has rocked their world.

Well first of all, sory for my aproximative english, I do my best but since it's not my native language the following would be full of grammar errors and others random spelling mistakes.


I collected White Dwarf magazines for nearly 15 years before I stoped early 2011 because of what the editorial policy became. And I wanted to know i others people feel the same way.

To demonstrate that i took one of my oldest WD (octobre 1999) and compared it to a more rencent one (february 2004) and one of my latest (january 2010).

octobre 1999 : the first 3 pages are dedicated to the edito and new GW products coming this month. then there is 2 articles on eldars aspect warriors and different kind of scenarii and tactics for warhammer (warhammer chronicles for those who remember this serie). then a HUGE article about mordheim which was released this month with lore, tactics and scenarii but NO prices or anything like an advert for the mordheim box. Then a serie of Lore related article on wh40k, a WD team's FAQ and a 20 pages long wh40k battle report between adrian wood, alex boyd and andy chambers, all playing orks in a ffa scenario. the magazine was also sold with a mordheim miniature.
