Gene-stealer is still a more or less conventional lifeform in shape and function. One brain, eyes, torso with organs inside, limbs and so on.

Legienstrausse and the other Maerorus do not have those restrictions. Also you need training to not die using polymorphine and you can't just change shape on a whim, there is preparation and shit.

A Maerorus can just decide that it needs a tentacle with an eye on the end to see around that corner without having to stick it's head into danger and it has one immediately. Jumping out of an aeroplane? Now you got enough wings to, if not fly, at least slow down. Got to fall fast? That's fine. Just make cushioning around the brain and hit the ground, whatever is left attached after the splat can be rebuilt into a couple of limbs and a digestive system. Then it's just a matter of eating the broken limbs to regain the biomass and scuttling off before the bring out non-kinetic weapons.

Presumably the only really good weapons would be ones that burn and destroy the cells at the chemical level. Flamers, plasma, meltas, strong acids and the like.

Also the brain, or analogous organs. The tissue will grow back easy but the memories won't unless there is another brain or some such collection of grey matter acting as a back up.

Which raises the problem that they could make two brains, shift them to opposite ends of the body, split down the middle and multiply via mitosis. Although as an artificial predator they might not have the instincts to want to breed beyond safety in numbers and needing numbers. But not too much numbers and be noticed too quickly and also deplete the food source. People are delicious for some reason, possibly an engineered preference to encourage hunting.

Legienstrausse can't mitosis. It's too alien a concept to envisage and enact for a person born human.

Its a chameleon dude. You're right, the Thing actually is pretty easy to kill in a one on one fight [until the reboot that is], its pretty slow and its shapeshifting just makes it about as durable as a particularly obnoxious animal.

The problem is, it looks exactly like a human being. Its basically a modernization of the fear that initially was attached to vampires and werewolves. The fear that the person you're talking to, the normal everyday human being may actually be something evil or alien, and attack without warning.

It only uses body horror to defend itself and to assimilate lifeforms. So basically yes, if it hits a populated area, mankind is fucked unless the IMMEDIATE unquestioning response is nuclear KILL IT WITH FIRE.

Occasionally describe what the PCs can smell. Pretty easy to come up with it on the spot, and they'll think you're some kind of Tolkeinesque-autismo-wizard for having so much "prepared" detail.

The Thing, hands down, no exceptions, scariest fucking monster there is. Can assimilate you from a single cell, if it reaches an inhabited area your civilization is basically over, and it breeds paranoia like crazy.

The main point of Nightmares of Mine by Kenneth Hite is that all genres explore a particular emotion. Horror explores the emotion of Fear, and the monsters in Horror are symbolic of commonly shared fears. He then goes on to provide a literary examination of all the classic monsters and the fears of society that they represented and how those fears changed over time.

Example: Zombies are a symbol of the primal fear of overpopulation leading to disease. Fear of Overpopulation, Fear of Contagion, Fear of Death. Fear of the collapse of order. These tropes are the buttons that Zombie stories push.

A good horror player or keeper knows and understands these fears and how to use their character or monsters to experience and elicit them.

Guys I'm looking for a map of the research outpost from The Thing.

Does anyone have it? I used to but I can't find that shit anymore.

Also, The Thing general.

Have some inspiration, I also recommend pulling every single person in your group away privately to talk and when you're all done telling the entire group, "I just want to remind some players that if I told you you're infected you have to play in character as infected."

Infinite tension.
