It is well know to any 40K naval captain that macrocannons and lance weapons can be used for orbital bombardment but how effective are say, torpedoes or nova cannons against planetary targets?

I'd suggest doing it in one of the broadside gun batteries, which are basically huge open chambers with four of pic related in them.

You could have one or two of the giant guns fallen off their mounts lying on the floor serving as equivalents to hills or ruins.

I was originally thinking the ship was lost to the warp during the age of apostasy and washed up in the Askellion sector, bereft of crew.
But the missing prow makes more sense and is much less dangerous for the crew than lingering daemonic infestations.
The name is a bit generic but I think that was the point of my request.

To Eldar, yes. To Tau, nope. Tau still don't have anything that can match terminator armor that isn't several times its size and Imperial warships still carry more advanced weapons, and that's before you take into account the tech that's only made on a few forgeworlds(cyclonics, plasma macros, nova cannons that fire warp shells, etc).

Funny thing about the weapon recoil for most ships is they don't have much of it. One of the little appreciated bits of 40k is that macro batteries are typically one of three things: lasers, plasma, or railguns.
