The most basic mechanism of any drug is that it is absorbed in the body and then acts on a receptor somewhere on your cells. Obviously this is an oversimplification. However, it is probably the easiest way to understand for a Layman. So when the drug is absorbed into the blood stream it find its way to the type of cell upon which it is supposed to work. The drug then binds to the cell receptor causing the cell to react a certain way. Each individual drug class that she mentioned have various and complex mechanisms. So, I hope this basic pharmacology will suffice for now. If you want a further breakdown of an individual drug in more simplistic terms just ask for it. That said we know the efficacy and safety of drugs through clinical trials and not just understanding the mechanism of action. So, some drugs have been used without a clear comprehension of how exactly they work, but they’ve proven to be better than placebo (or prior standard of care).
