My physics teacher:
"Light can't bend."

>> No.5722002 [View]

I'm upgrading grade 12 physics (I'm doing upgrading and university level courses at the same time). I don't know if that counts as soft science.
Where I live (not in the states), the government covers 100% of upgrading plus living expenses. They practically throw money at people to go to school here so they can pump out more workers. Apparently my teacher isn't on the same program. Part of me wonders if she fails students to pad her paycheck, since half the students in her courses are retaking the course.
A few students and I talked to the dean of upgrading and she agreed that the teacher's approach is a bit psychotic. The teacher has said the course is designed so only 15% of students pass, and that everyone else achieves around 65% or lower, and that ends up giving her a 65% average in her course. 65 is usually a good average, but most courses have it designed so that the people who show up and do the work (ie me) get high grades, and the people who don't get low grades, and it balances out to about 65. She said she's only handed out an A 5 times, and she's been teaching for like 30 years. I'm used to getting A's across the board. I could see this sort of thing in maybe some crazy high up university level courses, but in a high school course this is a bit excessive. I just see no reason I should have finished grade 11 physics with an A (and every other course with an A), and finished grade 12 physics with a C-.

Nope. She finds it more satisfying to spend a whole 80 minute glass berating us for our low marks, saying we just sit on our asses and do nothing between classes when we all spend insane amount of hours studying.

And, fuck, it's not like I didn't know the course material and theory. I got 90s-100s on assignments and labs and I was the go-to person when people needed help understanding. Her tests were just 90% of the course weight, and they were poorly worded and way harder than anything covered in the course or the textbook. They were practically psychotic.

I spent 8 goddamn hours a day in the library. I knew the text book cover to cover. I did every question on every assignment and worksheet whether it was mandatory or not. I worked harder in this course than I did on any other course. I've been on the dean's list for the past 3 years and now I'm suddenly failing. There are people working harder than me too and pulling no higher than a 70. There's no reason that all three of this teacher's courses should have averages below 50 persistently every semester in a high school level course. The teacher is literally worse than having no teacher.

I had a shitty teacher this semester too.

Taken from a letter a few students and I wrote:

"- repeatedly wasting class time by talking about subjects not related (or loosely related but not relevant) to the course material
- repeatedly going over the scheduled class time
- ridiculing students who ask questions in class
- publicly announcing where students made mistakes on tests and assignments, by name
- publicly announcing test scores in class, including low marks, by name
- not covering or not adequately covering material that is on tests
- not adequately preparing students for tests (assignments and questions assigned from worksheets and the text book do not adequately reflect the kinds of questions on the tests)
- not adequately informing students of important material from prior courses that should be reviewed (whether in or out of class time) for assignments and tests
- not taking responsibility for low class averages, instead shaming and talking down to students who performed badly on tests despite putting in adequate or more than adequate study time outside of class time
- intimidating students
As a result, the classes as a whole are failing to perform well on tests. On the first unit test, the class average was 50%. On the second unit test, the class average was 45%. The class average in total is in the 40s. Students who have perfect attendance and have been on the Dean's List in previous semesters are failing, or not obtaining grades high enough for university transfer or to get into their choice of program, or seeing a drastic drop in grades from previous related courses. Most of the students who are performing adequately either have a previous background in the course material, have taken the course before, or have described themselves as self-teaching."

>mfw I might not be able to pass a high school level upgrading course because of this teacher's shenanigans

They're both dangerous and life altering decisions and that need to be made with competence and clarity.

a) I know exactly how science uses correlation, but it does not imply causation in every instance. If you think it does, you are the one who has to learn more about the scientific method, not me.

b) The WHOLE BRAIN is plastic. This is why people who are missing half their brain can still function perfectly fine. The areas of the brain that correlate with gender differences are not apparent in brain scans of new born babies.

c) Brain differences are caused by any number of environmental factors. The brain differences caused by abnormal hormonal environments don't prove that there are brain differences between gender, just that brain patterns we once thought were exclusive to one gender are now being seen in both genders.

d) We treat gender dysphoria different from other dysphoric disorders. An example of this would be body integrity identity disorder. Some people feel like they should be limbless. Even if it was the only treatment, we would consider it unethical to remove perfectly healthy limbs from someone. Instead, we would look for an alternative treatment. The same should be done with GID. Giving into any type of dysphoria is unhealthy to the psyche of a person.

If children are capable of making the decision to have a sex change, do you think they are also capable of making the decision to have a tattoo as well?

>> No.5721150 [View]

>>5721128

I should also point out that there's been studies that have shown that there are no noticeable brain differences between males and females at birth. It's only when they are told that there are differences that we see differences arise.

a) Correlation does not imply causation.
b) The brain is so flexible that it can change within minutes. Brain differences between genders are learned. There are brain differences between people of different religions, and differences between people who do and do not play video games. The only behavioural differences between men and women are hormonal, not neurological.
c) The differences you pointed out do not prove there are actual differences between genders, only that things that were thought to be exclusive to one gender actually aren't.
d) I'm skeptical of the estrogen thing. Sounds like a result of confirmation bias and the placebo effect.
e) Even if transgenderism was based on science, why would they feel the need to adhere to stereotypes? There are cis females who look male. They usually don't go about getting hormones and surgeries and voice training to be more female. Females are allowed to look male, and males are allowed to look female. I don't care if a male wants to wear a dress and call himself a girl, but unfortunately according to his genetics, he's still male.

>> No.5721087 [View]

Gender identity is based on emotions and feelings. Not science. People don't go through scientific tests to determine which gender they feel like. They just feel like a girl or a boy, so they go through changes to adhere to the stereotypes of what a girl or boy looks like, how they dress, how they talk, and how they act.

Even looking at it without the science, it's still the stupidest show. Everybody except the girl is wearing no fewer than 5 layers of clothing at a time. Also, stereotypes everywhere. It's pretty much nerd blackface. And the only reason people find it funny is a) because most of the "smart" jokes are at a high school level or lower, so people think that because they like batman and some basic physics that they are smart too, even though half the science jokes on that show are incorrect, and b) the laugh track. If you've ever watched the show without the laugh track, it is the most awkward thing in the world. Also, even though most of the female characters in the show are accomplished in some way in the sciences, they never focus on those attributes. The male characters only see them as sex objects. Take out the nerds and the science and you have a typical shitcom: stereotypes, sexism, laugh track.
