we do have free will, but we can't do much with it.

not because "hurr chemicals in your brain" and that bullshit about particles having predefined paths.

all the factors that determine what our life will be are determined at birth - natural intelligence, upbringing, opportunities, these will shape our personality and everything we experience.

all you have control over is, say, where you put your pen down on your desk, but even minor things like these are often affected by other things (e.g. ocd, organization, for the pen example).

so we don't have much control over our lives, but at the same time we have full control in terms of how we steer our own bodies through life.

this is best summed up in the opening lines of the great gatsby

>In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since.

>“Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”

Rebecca Black's Friday is the 82nd highest rated video of all time, despite only 13% of votes being positive.

I think this is because Youtube use a primitive ranking algorithm, probably 2 points for a thumbs up, -1 for thumbs down.

A better ranking system needs to take into account both the number of votes and the percentage.

for example, 50 ups and 50 downs should be ranked above 1 up and 1 down, even though the percentage is the same, because it is increasingly difficult to sustain that percentage as you increase the voters.

but at the same time 10000 ups 10000 downs shouldn't beat 500 ups 2 downs.

The Elo rating system is used to rank chess player, this takes into account the players' current scores and the outcome of each game.

Are there any ranking algorithms that are used to rank things based on user votes?
