Most of them were found by accident. That is partly why I find this fun.
I'm not implying in any way my "supreme artistic or mathematical skill" is behind any of these. I just find one I like, position camera, and color a bit.

I don't know the answer to that. Fractals seem to be a highly efficient way of storing and receiving information among other things, so it would not surprise me if evolution had adapted such a method to its design a long the way.

It showed up when I was playing around with adding multiple "Apollo 2D" formulas onto each other with different poly orders. I was just trying every DIFS formula to try and get a feel for its effect.
