Absolutely fantastic idea, I can barely count all the scientists who would die at the chance to be professionally associated with 4chan. I'm sure any links with /b/ or Anonymous are excellent credentials for any scientific career path.

My best effort I'm afraid. Please feel free to tidy up or disregard entirely. I've just pasted the existing cargo-bays on and made some minor adjustments.

I like how you have positioned the cargo-bays, I'm working on adding them to Mad Scientists version and neatening them up slightly, although I'm slightly worse at paint than aardvark is at venture capitalism so don't hold out much hope on me succeeding.

1. Slight correction, I think I may have initially misunderstood this question, I thought you were referring to hydrogen in outer space, and how much of that would be required to naturally result in fusion.

But I think you were actually meaning for how it is done on earth in labs right? In that case, we have done it with just two hydrogen atoms, but the prototype fusion power stations use several kilograms I believe (Citation needed, just an estimate based on rough size)

Note also that on earth we mostly use an isotope of hydrogen called deuterium in fusion reactors, not just plain hydrogen.

Please remember I'm out of my scientific comfort zone here.

5. Nearly all interactions between atoms in a molecule are down to the electromagnetic force, but it can manifest in several different forms of bonds such as hydrogen bonding, covalent and ionic bonds, dipole-diplole interactions and so forth.

In highly unusual cases, such as at very high pressures, the strong nuclear force can also have a tangible effect, resulting in fusion of individual atoms.

Gravity also provides slight bond, but this is so incredibly weak that everybody (aside from a few weird theoretical physicists) ignore it.

4. Technically I suppose the matter does all fuse in a black hole, but he pressure due to gravity is so high that atoms cannot exist, so the matter fuses to such a high degree that all the atoms collapse into a huge mass entirely composed of neutrons. The centre of a black whole can be thought of as one giant nucleus.

I should point out that I am a biochemist by training, so nuclear physics and cosmology are a bit out of my field, so if anybody can add to, or correct my explanations please do so.

3. I'm less sure on this one, so I'm merely speculating here.

Most obviously you would have stronger tides, perhaps up by several meters in cases. Also I would have thought that there would be in increase in some seismic activity, so more frequent earthquakes. Weather systems may also be effected to some degree.

2. Many species of algae do produce hydrogen as a by-product, and although we have more efficient ways of producing hydrogen, they do have certain advantages. Firstly, with the right algae, start up costs can be very low, as no complex large scale electrolysis equipment is required. Secondly, certain algae can also be farmed as food, allowing you to get two birds with one stone.

As for fusion power, the liming factor isn't obtaining the hydrogen, its generating the large pressures and temperatures required that is costly.

1. Fusion occurs when there is enough hydrogen for its gravity to compress the atoms close enough for them to overcome their electromagnetic repulsion, and succumb to the strong nuclear force, causing them to fuse together into one atom. I'm not sure quite how much you need, but at a ball park estimate I'd say perhaps .2 to .5 solar masses, but a cosmologist (or wikipedia) could give you a more accurate answer.

I strongly support the idea of attaching the toroid habitats to the ship, a excellent project for somebody with greater Paint skills than I to be working on.

Incidentally, you mentioned we are intending to venture into deep space, I take that to mean further than just Mars or elsewhere in the solar system? If this is the case, will an orion drive really be sufficient for the journey? As I feel another drive system would be required, solar sail, ion drive or perhaps even some sort of alcubierre or other FTL system.

Also I believe we need larger cargo-bays for the ship, it needs to contain enough equipment to build a civilisation from stretch on an alien planet. Not to mention larger landers, those small shuttles are too small for large scale space-to-surface cargo delivery.

Just my musings on this project, I've been making my own attempts to implement these additions, but so far my results have been embarrassingly lacking in quality, if anybody feels they could do it better than I, please go right ahead

I like the ship, its great but I feel it could do with a bit more detail before it is ready to launch. It's a great starting module for our deep-space craft, but it require cargo-bays, cockpits, more descent vehicles, sensors and communication arrays, and a dozen other vital systems.

In a more serious vain;
You appear to be attributing your lack of success to an absence of talent, almost as if you think successful people are just born with a skill set and coast through life easily. This is not the case, But what it really comes down to is straight forward hard work.

At the risk of sounding mean and heartless, my advise to you is to stop blaming yourself, or others and start putting some effort in, and I mean serious amounts of effort into your life.

Was there a kid at your school who always got stupidly high grades? That wasn't because he was much more talented than you, it was as he worked much, much harder.

Nope.

Have you ever played Warhammer/YuGiOh or similar games? If so, what?
Can't say that I have.

Do you play vidya? if so what genres do you enjoy the most?
Yup, RTS mostly, and the few good FPS's our their, e.g. Half Life.

No. An Idea gas is a purely theoretical construct, as it assumes particles have no volume or mass, which is of course impossible.

Pic unrelated but nice to look at.
