we have already done this with plants for bearing fruit, and as a way to make them resistant to pesticides, eliminated several species of fruit and veggies and clone most of them now.
since many are cloned, a specific disease could theoretically take out one's whole crop.
imagine that with animals, at least, even more than what has been done...

i know that with a tough economy many engineers aren't working in their desired field but i don't think an engineer will just up and become a doctor.
