I'm thinking it's the all the atoms, particularly hydrogens (there's one with three bonds), that have way too many bonds.

Anyway, I'm going with Splice or any other movie that hur durs genetics down to super gluing a bunch of random traits together.

I think Mendeley used to have a way to share papers, but I don't think that's available any more (Elsevier bought them a while back). I don't really know what to tell you. I'm watching this thread, too, to see if anything comes up.

I meant to sage that. Damn. Don't be made /sci/, I apologize. This new "Quick Reply" thing is weird.

I'm in grad school now (I'm a small mammal population geneticist, apparently). I haven't been on 4chan in close to a year.

It works better for some things than others. The reason it works is because professors will host copies of their work on their .edu sites and that search finds those.

If you're a student, from my perspective, I'd say don't feel bad. Students who actually do the work, regardless of what others do, are the ones who make it so lab actually finishes on time. The ones who aren't working in lab probably aren't learning outside of lab either, so don't feel bad about cutting in on their time.

If you're a TA and you've taught more than one semester you know the answer is "whatever it takes to actually finish the lab on time".

I wish this didn't come up every semester.

This.

Also, fuck threads like this. Google it. I've seen this questioned asked over and over again on /sci/ and I'm tired of it.

I mean, it's good that you want to know, but you should spend a little time trying to understand it before crying to /sci/.

Also, looking at some of the other posts here, /sci/ has gotten dumber since I was last here. Must be summer.

This is true! I've always liked ecology math because it's so grounded in readily observable processes but sometimes yields surprising results (all of the stuff around alternative stable states is pretty cool). I also think that ecology tends to be a field for "patient" people since it changes over long time scales (which for me is awesome; I've never been quite as thrilled with molecular stuff that takes place in seconds or less).

Plus, I like animals and being outside. It's pretty awesome.

I've been thinking about how the different resource distributions in rural vs urban environments might affects territory size, shape, and predator-prey dynamics. "Thinking" being the key word there since I can't even read half of the journal articles I look up since I graduated. Also, thinking about landscape ecology in general.

Also, researching how to get potential graduate advisors to respond positively to my emails.

I personally crusade for Verdana since it was literally designed to be read off a screen.

Times New Roman is OK and I like Calibri, too, to be honest.

Fuck monospace garbage unless your paper has more number than words.

Cleary, this thing is switching happy and upset because /an/ is never super-pissed and /sci/ is always mad about something.

Oh, duh, that makes sense.
If you just caught a bear claw in the ass, you don't want to the feel the pain to the point you can't move. You just want the adrenaline and the endorphins to get the hell out of there. Sweet. Nice explanation.

Probably because the brain thinks you survived a near death experience and would prefer you did the same thing in the future. It's like "Good job! You didn't die! *pats head* ".

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure. It could just be some kind of evolutionary glitch, like an addictive version of allergies. I don't really know.

You may find this an interesting read:

http://books.google.com/books/about/Iron_John.html?id=ELWA2YlAeUEC

It's sort of comparable to "Women Who Run With Wolves" from a male perspective. It's closer to a long meditation on the topic than anything scientific (it draws it's title and much of it's contents from fairy tales). It's interesting, anyway. The role of the male mentor (or at least, in my opinion, the mentor who happens to occupy a traditionally male status, regardless of gender) is becoming neglected. We aren't as willing to reach out to young men through apprenticeship and mentorship as we once were to the detriment of young men in our society. I think that's a real lose; it's as much of a loss as absent fathers, in my opinion.

That said, it's 2am and I'm probably not thinking straight.

Oh god, I make ham-handed attempts at writing and poetry from time to time (so, similar to >>4256491 ), but I'm tone deaf and couldn't draw a straight line if you gave me a pencil and a ruler. I do try sometimes, though.

This is a really cool painting, by the way, wherever it came from.
