The theoretical and most recent stuff is what interests me most. Specifically, quantum physics, rather than the type of physics that engineering works with.

>study physics in your own time
Yeah, that's what everyone keeps saying. But I'd really like to take it seriously; a career out of it (or astronomy, or both really) is a dream job. It's not just something I'm interested in; it's something I actually aspire to study in depth and further human knowledge in.

Yeah, so I have romantic notions of my future, whatever.

To work as a astrophysicist in a prestigious scientific company.

>what you love
physics
>what you're good at
physics, maths to some degree, design
>what you think will get you money
engineering/design
>what sounds easiest
of what i've mentioned, easily design
>what your parents tell me to do
engineering/design

yeah, still in high school, can't decide what to do. want to take physics since i've loved it since i was a kid, but parents keep saying i'm unlikely to have a successful career there (i.e., only the best of the best make it). engineering/design is fun, and i know i'd enjoy it, but i don't want to regret not taking my real passion instead.

tl;dr: love physics, get money with engineering/design and like it too, what do guys.

i'm still in high school, and i'm enthusiastic in multiple areas, including physics, astrophysics, maths, but also design.

my dad's interested in me taking some industrial design/engineering courses after uni, which sounds good, but i've started to take a bigger interest in theoretical astrophysics. but my parents keep telling me that it's hard to secure a high-paying job in the science community as an astrophysicist / physicist (i.e. you have to be the best of the best), and i should stick with the engineering/design idea.

there's probably truth in what they're saying, but i still don't know. astrophysics is something that's fascinated me ever since i was a kid, and it's a dream job. i don't want to have regrets later in life. what do guys

to the contrary, travelling into the past makes more sense than travelling into the future

A mathematician, a physicist and an engineer are sitting a test. The first question is, "Are all odd numbers prime?"

The mathematician thinks, "3 is prime, 5 is prime, 7 is prime, 9 is not prime - the answer is no."

The physicist thinks, "3 is prime, 5 is prime, 7 is prime, 9 is not prime - that could just be experimental error - 11 is prime, 13 is prime - yes, all odd numbers are prime."

The engineer thinks, "3 is prime, 5 is prime, 7 is prime, 9 is prime, 11 is prime..."

There was a science jokes thread yesterday on /sci/.

A physicist, an engineer and a statistician all go hunting in the forest. They spot a deer and get ready to shoot.

The physicist does some quick ballistics calculations in his head (assuming vacuum), but lands five metres short.

The engineer accounts for some air resistance, but lands five metres too long.

The statistician yells, "We've got him!"

If the neutrino DID break the speed of light, then Einstein's work would have to be revised. Not everything he said was correct (and we already know that, anyway).

Okay, by 'care about mankind', I thought we were comparing someone who's generally pretty selfish with Mother Teresa. Obviously, someone who is completely and utterly introverted to the point of being secluded from humans completely is going to be disadvantaged by natural selection, yes. But on a more general level, caring about mankind isn't really a factor in natural selection, I believe.
