beta/alpha is not scientific.

the concept has been generally scrapped in regards to human behavior. in fact, the concept of an alpha/beta male even in the animal kingdom has been blown way out of proportion. there is no true ''alpha'' male in any animal kingdom, including humans.

stop parroting bullshit you read on /fit/ or PUA forums. the alpha/beta bullshit is just not there; you are making it up. i've even heard people talk about gamma, omega, sigma, etc. what the fuck

The engineer hating/faggotry thing on /sci/ is a meme and frankly, it's /sci/ banter. Getting rid of that is like trying to tell /sp/ to get rid of
>ireland
>too much ass

Frankly, I don't want /sci/ to get rid of it; just curb it. The jokes associated with it were very subtle and somewhat sly from time to time. I think a lot of engineering majors took it to heart though and started lashing out, which is really funny because it makes them definitely seem like sissies.

The IQ threads should genuinely be discarded. There's nothing more that can come out of them, period. Like the first response stated, it should be filtered with something so that people can go on to better conversations.

Computer Science is hated like engineers are hated; i.e., not real hate. It is genuinely friendly banter(at least it began that way during the inception of /sci/).

>mad scientist
>good

That faggot just made threads about the
>DEEP OCEAN XD

Seriously, fuck him. He had /sci/ doing high-end role-play for a bit. You had faggots in paint, building underwater stations and uploading them. Those threads were fucking pathetic.

Why did anyone ever like that guy? He was also one of those 'hur dur, let's post IQ pix of blks n wytes xD' posters, and didn't know a lick of actual mathematical knowledge.

From the times I saw him, he seemed somewhat helpful.

I don't browse /sci/ often enough, so maybe I viewed his good posts and missed his bad posts.

Saging also since it's well, not /sci/.

He said some interesting stuff from time to time, though. I remember exactly what thread you're referring to, though.

It was some Topology thread and he kept saying some shit 'begged' the question when it was a simple conditional. It was fucking weird.

Because you're trying to troll in a thread where people are being semi-serious about the topic.

If you want to do
>LMAO UMADUMAD U SO FUKIN MAD xD
go to /b/ or /soc/. The guy wrote a paper, put time and effort into it, and people are providing feedback/discussing the subject. You're mocking it.

Either add something to the conversation at hand or leave the thread.

No. Fuck no.

I vote against myself. Not only am I not even involved in /sci/ so much, but people hate tripfags for that very reason most of the time.

In other news: Whatever happened to the Rhizome project? I'm still on that on Google. The books that I want/need are rarely there, though. Weak.

Who REMEMBERS the Rhizome project?

I agree with this. There's a huge dilemma with this, though:
Not enough people are adept in these fields to partake in those threads. As you can tell from the past few months, more than half of the denizens of /sci/ aren't that experienced in those sub-fields of Math. This isn't a good or bad thing in particular, but that's the way it is.

Also, this is 4chan after all. If someone gets a blatantly wrong answer or someone provides a wrong proof, people are swift to disrespect them. Also, egotistical posters who feel that they are the absolute best and everyone else is subpar.

There are people here who aren't under aged, but haven't been exposed to mathematics in a while. Every now and again, we get posts from people who are CC students or older adults who haven't been to Uni in quite some time. As such, their mathematical skills are lacking.

The original aim consisted of merely providing slight brain teasers to a variety of people from all backgrounds. The daily putnam thread, for example, excludes an enormous amount of individuals of /sci/ because not everyone can answer them. I love the Putnam threads and it was a good idea the mod(moot or someone else) decided to sticky a question everyday. It's just that not everyone can get involved. Also, the quiz threads I made contained questions from other higher-level math fields as I stated previously.

Why I go to 4chan? Because it's fun.

If you mean why I'm on /sci/, it's because it's fun. Also,
>fucking tripfag
:( I feel you dislike me because I trip.

In the beginning, /sci/ was pretty rad.

I used to have weekly quizzes with Calc I, II and III questions just for fun. Brain teasers for the ones who were really good. To include those who weren't in Calculus just yet, I'd put up algebra equations or Pre-calc based material they could answer. Other people in the thread started asking questions on group theory, analysis, etc. I doubt anyone remembers these threads(this was in the 1st and 2nd wks of /sci/), but I used a Yotsuba picture. We also had someone on /sci/ going over Logic; physics discussions were actually discussed with, you know, some actual MATH. We didn't have any IQ threads up or anything of the sort until later on. There was/is ChemGuy who is, quite possibly, the most knowledgeable chemist on /sci/. I literally do not know why he lurks here sometimes; he is too good to be on /sci/. I've yet to see him ever wrong on any subject dealing with Chemistry or Biochemistry. He's a monster.

EK came soon after. Afterward, a slew of people came in; some good, but most horrible. Some people correlate EK's arrival with the descent of /sci/, but she just came around the same time it started to descend. I was one of the few people who started 'hating' on EK, but I only did it for fun and it was meant to be a joke. In all fairness, though, EK would say a lot of dumb shit or recommend wrong solutions to problems which she had no experience in. She was good in certain HW threads and liked to chat up stuff, but she was inexperienced in many fields of mathematics, physics, probability, etc. Harriet, her counterpart, was/is much smarter.

People try starting decent threads, but they get railroaded by shitty posters or they're buried underneath the mess of other horrible posts.

Those forums are there for scientific, academic and intellectual enhancement only. Maybe 4chan has skewed your sense of forums, but not all have a sense of dry humor.

If you think stack exchange is bad, it's counterpart(for Grad students, professors and postdocs) is pretty stoic. They once tried to have a thread on humor, but it was immediately flagged and taken down. Those websites are strictly for those interested in academic pursuits and nothing more.

are you Based ChemGuy?

i gave you that name, btw. i consider you one of the most knowledgeable non-trip/non-namefags. i remember when /sci/ first started and how you gave several tutorials on how-tos regarding chemistry. i also remember you helping a lot of people and being brutally honest with a lot of shit. crazy smart, too. you eat and shit chemistry, from what i remember.

>> No.4317753 [View]

>>4317750

yeah, but no. i appreciate what you're attempting to imply, but it's not at the same level.

even if someone is going to a shit level grad school ( ... ._. ) the work is exceptionally on a different level than undergrad. there's a certain standard that needs to be met. even at the shitty grad schools.

>> No.4317740 [View]

it isn't ''homework'' in the usual sense. the problems are normally very difficult and cannot be solved in an examination time period.

depending on the grad school you go to, you have an oral exam to pass, a comprehensive written exam to pass, etc. all of that shit applies. have to score well on them, of course. if you don't, i think you're given a second chance by taking over some courses and doing extra studying.

>> No.4317738 [View]

>>4317735

depends.

at my grad school, the classes have some exams but a lot of assignments. take-home assignments.

depending on the prof, the assignments take precedent over the examinations. the work is obviously harder and the breadth of work is exceptional in the sense that everything is expected of you. there's no 'hur dur lets review.' it's pretty straight forward and the profs assume you know shit; otherwise, you wouldn't be in the class.
