What level?

I used Basic Fluid Mechanics by David C. Wilcox for my undergrad Fluid Mechanics class and absolutely loved it. It's a bit short on examples, but what it lacks in examples it makes up for descriptiveness and rigor.

Dunno if you can find it easily online though.

I think I could be ok with this sort of grading system in a 100/200 level course with like 300 students on an exam if the TAs are fair with partial credit and such. For smaller, more advanced level courses (especially at the graduate level, where lots of students are fighting to maintain high GPAs to keep teaching/research assistantships) it seems pretty harsh.

I've lived most of my life in a pretty heavily Baptist area of the US and there has been exactly one occasion that I can remember where someone proselytized me. I just told them I wasn't interested and walked away (I was on my way to class). I haven't met too many atheists that were vocal about their beliefs, but the ones who were tended to be pretty relaxed and enjoyed debate without getting all mad about things.

I can't help but feel like posts like OP's are huge exaggerations, but I've seen a lot of people complain about the religious/atheists being jackasses like that so maybe it's not. I guess I've been extraordinarily lucky or something.

Mechanical engineering is certainly a good place to start if you're unsure, especially if you like practicality and the idea of building things. At the undergrad level it's usually pretty easy to switch from MechE to something else (be it another engineering discipline or one of the sciences) in the first couple of years if your interests change.

Before you ask what it's like, check out course descriptions and do a little research to see if you really find it interesting.
