Sorry if you wanted a more generalized idea, but I find the chain rule is best taught by example to many people.

>> No.1779638 [View]

Take for example the function
f(x)= (x^2+1)^3

You need to identify some inside function "u" in this case u=x^2+1

Thus we have f(x)=u^3

The derivative of this will be f'(x)=3u^2 * u'

From there you simply plug in "u" and solve

You add acid to water, don't let these guys fuck with you. Think, a drop of water into an acid will boil and possibly cause burns; a drop of acid into water wont boil.

Integrate.
Let F= integral sign

F x^n= (x^[n+1])/n+1

Thus: [(x^2)/2]-[(x^3)/3] |1,0 is your definite integral, from there you just plug in and solve algebraically

Your second point is true, though I feel ubiquitous world wide.

From my foreign class mates (there are a ton of international students at my college) it would appear all nations put FAR too much emphasis on standardized testing. USA notwithstanding obviously.

Yeah, but in my HS we had a 52% grad rate in my cohort year. NY state came in and took us over and the person you're responding to is right- the government's answer to failure is a top-down response.

They cut the depth and rigor of AP Courses, make you use ridiculous not taking methods (you don't have enough room to write out the formulae needed, but thats cool since the state considered writing formulae to be a hindrance to understanding math, but if a complex problem in which you didnt have to write half the steps ended up being 5x=8-4x then SO HELP YOU GOD if you didn't right out all your work at that point you would get the problem wrong)

I digress, but the way public schools are regulated they are forced to assume all students are 100% intellectually. They cut standards at the top and wonder why the kids they are supposed to be helping are still dropping out four years later.

Two reasons:
1) Top universities have a shit load of money to reinvest or pay top professors to come teach.

2) Public schools are run by the government, which has to use its "proven, successful..." methods of dropping standards to accommodate the less intelligible students.

Art teaches expression in my opinion. Expressing yourself if typically considered important in science, and any real world subject.

The same way most sensible English majors will tell you (in retrospect) that their math courses taught critical thinking, also applicable to any real world subject.

Learn some calculus. Don't overly concern yourself with formal definitions of differentiation and integration now, just learn the concepts and applications.

Some basic statistics too, though definitions will be important.
