Independant, own-pace learning is definitely the most the most effective way (by orders of magnitude imo). And now we can keep track of kids while they're doing it too!

I think kids spend too much time "working" though atm. Kids should be kids. Homework should not exist untill secondary school at least. And school days should have lots of breaks for sport (15 mins every hour) to keep kid's motivation/concentration up.
I really can't express in words how much less effective i think the current approach to education is.

I had a friend who taught himself piano in 6 months to a level it takes most people years to achieve. The key difference was that because he was doing it entirely off his own bat he could put in the level of dedication it required, which he wouldn't have been able to do had he been going to formal lessons.

When i think of how much of my childhood was wasted in boring classrooms, basically learning nothing, it makes me mad.

How the fuck do brains work /sci/?

You mean to tell me that the mindless dispersal of neurotransmitters can lead to such complex behaviour?

I don't habeeb it.

But if you don't believe in god you go to hell. This fear of hell is the root cause of much religious insanity.

So I propose to you anon's wager:

1. God exists.
>a) You live as a moral non-believer. God rewards you for doing what is right and you get eternal happiness.
>b) You live as a believer. God punishes you for not standing up for what is right.

2. God doesn't exist.
> a) you live as a non-believer: you enjoy life
> b) you live as a believer: have shit life.

>Rational choice = a.

Pascal's wager relies on the assumption that god is the exact god of a certain religion. Once you realise you can't make any assumptions on what god will or will not punish, you're left with two choices:

a) act as if god exists (or the more philosophically dodgy)
b)act as if god is truly good (and thus won't care if you choose not to believe him).

I got enough of a buzz so as i could link up the the rational concept of "endorphin release" with the specific concious feeling of an endorphin rush.
and thus whenever i'm having a wank or doing anything endorphiny i can focus better on the feeling and enjoy it much better.
Being able to quantify dopamine and endorphin buzzes in my brain also makes me much better at telling how good things feel relative to each other and thus imo live a more fulfilling life.

I'm sorry that i didn't need to slam heroin to get what I wanted from that class of drugs.

Did kratom and codeine a few times. I feel like part of some neuropsychological elite now that i'm able to tell the specific feeling of an endorphin release as i go about my life.

But i've had my fun now and I wouldn't use them recreationally.
I'd be tempted to try oxycodone and the like if i knew someone with them but I wouldn't give in.
Opiates are pretty addictive and they're pretty shit drugs. Sure, you feel great. but they don't really alter your conciousness in any way. You don't gain anything from the experience. You just feel good for a few hours. Other drugs help you socialise or gain new insights, which is why i like to think i do them.

Great article in newscientist about the growing trend of overdiagnosis of mental disorders in children.
I espeically liked this quote from Allen Francis (the man who wrote the DSM-IV)

>"Psychiatric diagnoses are getting closer and closer to the boundary of normal,"

I thought /sci/ would like.

The male brain is programmed to be monogamous. We didn't evolve the ability to fall in love for no reason. But it's also programmed to not turn down pieces on the side if it can get away with it. In most cultures you're expected to ignore these urges, and rightly so.

>>3193455

>Men are serial monogamists

Serial monogamy is really only a way of achieving polygyny through stealth in a society that enforces monogamy.
You should only really find it in societies where monogamy is enforced (but somehow divorce is allowed), women have a high degree of independace, and birth rates are relatively low.
Think about it this way: why would a man leave his woman if she's still pumping out children for him. Bear in mind how much he's already invested in the children he has with her.

Casual sex would have pretty much never existed. Any woman fucked by a man would have been his wife, or a rape victim from a different tribe (or possibly a woman with whom he his fucking on the sly- this is an incredibly risky move for him and the wife though. If caught their lives could be at stake).
Men "fucking below their standards" as they do today would have been quickly removed from the gene pool as they would have been forced by the ugly slut's parents to spend his life wasting his resources on her and their ugly retarded children.

>> No.3189265 [View]

I think labelling a child's personality as "diseased" does a huge amount of damage to their self-esteem, which actually in many cases destroys a child's chances of overcoming whatever initial disadvantage they have. Not only that, but they can just blame their "disease" for not trying and thus actually the diagnosis makes them worse than they would have been without it. I guess a really thourough cost:benifit analysis should be done before diagnosing a child with a mental/learning disability.

It's really sad because many of these traits are actually benificial in low amounts and needed by society to advance and the envelope of how bad you need to be to qualify for a diagnosis is being continuously pushed by parents who want an exucse for the fact that their kids are underachieving in school/not fitting in as well as they'd like.

I'm pretty sure 90% of 4chan could have been diagnosed with adhd, ocd or aspergers had they been children nowadays with the wrong parents in the wrong country- Where i live we have public health and ritalin is rarely prescribed. I have friends from countries that rely much more on private health. Doctor's being paid to deliver the good. Everyone's on that shit.

Would these people let their kids do coke?
Probably not, but ritalin is pretty much the same just longer lasting. I wonder what sort of long-term consequenses it has on dopamine levels in the brain? I used to snort it back in college before heading (and with a little booster during the night). Amazing times but the comedown was killer. An 8yo doesn't understand what a comedown is?
People give out about this sort of shit being done to animals.

125 is plenty intelligent to succeed in most fields, what you need most of all is creativity and the ability to really think for yourself on things,
You also need wisdom and the right sort of cognitive style, a unique way of looking at things and very high levels of dedication.

I'm not saying you can succeed if you put the workl in, i'm saying that if you don't succeed it won't be because of a lack of "intelligence".

>Studies of chess masters and highly successful artists, scientists and musicians usually find their IQs tobe above average, typically in the 115 to 130 range, where some 14 per cent of the population reside -impressive enough, but hardly as rarefied as their achievements and abilities.

It would be like wasting my life trying to persuade the "flat earthers" that the earth is not flat. Gotta prioritise.
