OP,

Take out a piece of paper. Now draw a line of length negative one inches. Now, at one of the endpts of this line, draw a line of equal length, but perpendicular to the first one.

What does it look like?

I sympathize with you OP. Glad you've discovered the wonders of learning and attaining consciousness despite your environment.

Try khanacademy.org

It's a free resource and can teach you pretty much anything you need to learn. Full courses on algebra 2, geometry, trig, precalc, calc, chemistry, physics, etc etc

I'm a first year in MIT.

I got a perfect score on my physics midterm =D (Classical Mech II), a 94% on My multivariable calc midterm, 83 in chem, and a 93 on a term paper for this humanities class called "inductive logic"

I hate chemistry with a passion; good thing first semester at MIT is grades with a pass/no record system.

The horizontal displacement of the potato divided by the time it took for the potato to reach the ground is equal to the average wind speed.

Think about it; the only force causing the potato to move to the side is due to wind speed.

By height I assume that you mean the highest point?

You just need to find the initial velocity, plug it into one of the kinematics equation, and solve for vertical displacement.

Don't over think it OP, it's easy stuff

I'm sorry if you perceived my comment as arrogant; it wasn't meant to be taken that way. Arrogance is definitely /sci/'s biggest problem.
But we must understand that this arrogance, for many people here, stems from an unjustified period of social isolation and, in some cases, bullying.

The day that we start showing some compassion and love for our fellow man and learn to cooperate is the day where we lose the need to defend our established personal biases and arrogance.

Sure. The plane's elevation from the ground is 4 km.
At some time afterward an observer measures the angle of elevation to be 60 degrees.
At this point make a pretty little right triangle in which you drop a horizontal from the plane to the ground and connect the plane to the observer.

This makes an angle of 60 degrees, and the side opposite this angle is 4.

Therefore, tan 60 = 4/x (opp/adj)

x = 4 / tan 60

x = 2.31

Now we do the same thing when the angle of elevation is 30 degrees.

tan 30 = 4 /x

x = 7.18

Let the horizontal displacement of the plane at the time where angle of elevation is 60 to be zero, and the displacement when the angle is 30 to be 7.18 - 2.31

Therefore, the plane has traveled 4.87 km / min, or about 4.9 km/min

Since this is just a case of two dimensional motion, and the plane flew right over the observer, you just have to look at the change in horizontal displacement.

My method is definitely correct.

Grade One Thinker fag here.

Yes, I have done this. However, I'd like to wager that less than 10% of /sci/ has.
Don't take that as too much of an insult. It's better than the 0% for the religious populations.

This problem could be solved using Newtonian Mechanics. Now you're a suicidal basement dweller lurking an underground discussion board dedicated to math and science. I have no doubt you can solve this question yourself.

Scientists don't pretend they know the definite answers to life's questions. As human beings, all we can do is base what we know on probability.

Just because philosophy majors are scientifically inept doesn't mean that science is useless.
