>CS is a subset of mathematics

Playing around with babies first graph theory and combinatorics doesn't make CS a subset of math. If any field is a subset of math, it's either physics or EE.

What subjects and topics do you believe should be the standard requirement in the undergrad/graduate curriculum of your field/major? Similarly, what electives do you think are the most important or worthwhile?

I'm curious to see what /sci/ thinks is important

why is computer science so difficult for under graduates?

why is it so difficult to understand that whenever you come up with an algorithm you have to argue its correctness?

"hey here's an algorithm that can send you back in time and it runs in O(n^3) time :D"

I just finished grading assignments

hmm are you referring to the motivational letter?

well in that case... write what are the reasons why you want to become a PhD student, be honest, don't lie because all of them will be uncovered while being there, which will in turn generate a lot of unpleasant situations both for you and your supervisor, group you're part of etc

I have been a PhD student for almost a year now and it's a pain in the ass, but for some reason I like it. The feeling when you prove a new idea is incomparable against anything else in the entire universe.

BTW my area of focus is algorithms and data structures.

>Set and logic notation everywhere
>Oh god CS is like so unbelievably mathematical dudez! You wouldn't understand since your schools are all shit tier

I'm sick of CS majors not realizing their ¡non-programming! courses are laughable compared to math, physics, and engineering courses.

And their programming courses are a far cry from making them resemble any sort of competent programmer. There's literally no redeeming value in a CS degree.

>it just seems that most of the CS students want to build web apps or software to make a buck instead of rigorous research

It's not that it seems to be that way, it is that way. Undergraduate CS is completely disjoint from any type of graduate education in CS. Undergrad CS is purely daycare for overgrown manchildren retards. Those that want to study CS in graduate school are math or engineering majors.

>>6067883
>Universities still don't know how to split CS into a set of meaningful degrees
>CS as a degree has only existed since halfway through the 60's

Hasn't stopped University from establishing a rigorous and respected program of study for the computer engineering sibling field.

>Even then, the REAL CS courses are really only available at the master's level, because one needs a lot of knowledge from diverse fields for CS research.

100% agree. Undergrad CS programs should completely die off. The only topics that can be covered are either enterprise java code-monkeying or extremely pathetic waterdown CS concepts which majors still fail to understand.

>CS is the one science closest to mathematics

No, that is without a doubt Theoretical Physics. CS doesn't come close to the sheer breath and depth of mathematics that appears in the study of real physics.

Hey /sci. Im trying to come up with an algorithm to put into a flowchart that converts a base 10 number to a base 2 number. Any idea on how to go about this?

I know you would have to divide the base 10 number by base 2 until its completely broken down, but how would you represent storing the remainders in flow chart form and then displaying them from the bottom up to represent the base 2 form? Any ideas?

Pic unrelated.

No, it doesn't. CS implies 2-4 easy semester of calculus, 1 pathetic matrix algebra class, and a bunch of watered down bullshit being called discrete math and probability.

Bullshit, undergrad automata and complexity courses are trivial as fuck.

>It's fucking undergrad, not everyone is going to do a masters in pure or applied maths. You could say that shit about literally any major.

University and especially their Math, Science, and Engineering programs should NOT be in the business of letting people fuck around for 4 years just to get a paper saying they're employable in the end. They should actually require them to learn the subject matter of Mathematics. Enough Mathematics in scope and depth that they are at the point that they are knocking at the door of graduate education at the end of it.

It's this kind of logic that transformed undergraduate CS ' """education""" ' in to a 4 year manchild daycare programs that teaches student literately nothing at all.

Hey /sci/,
I have to sign up for university in 4 days. Information engineering was my first choice, and after the 3 years I would have to choose two additional years, between biomedical, tlc, electronic, and computer engineering.
Two days ago, anyway, one of my friends suddenly chose computer science and I realised that maybe a purer science would be the best for me. I am now struggling between comp science and computer engineering. I'd like to do some counseling in the future, and I'm afraid that with comp science I would remain stuck in the programming phase. I'm also afraid I won't like the electronics part in computer engineering. Also, I wouldn't mind making some money in the future.
How can I choose? Do you have any personal experience you can tell me about? What would the best choice be, in your very own opinion?

Thanks in advance, and excuse me for my english

Don't see why I should care about this, though obviously these people should really just be getting a programming certificate at CC.

At my school the first year triumvirate of Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Statistics filters out about 90% of them. The remainder drop out half way through Calculus II.
