Only a few more hours until america is made great again!

But seriously, lets get to the point.

If Donald Trump wins the presidential election, what scientific advances can we hope to see?

>> No.8464165

Hopefully none because it is already time that the government stops funding "advancements" when private industry is already more than capable of funding innovations on their own, literally all the time, and start using the money they waste on NASA on regular citizens.

Oh, guess what? Trump is the middle class and lower class pandering candidate. So none! Finally.

Seriously, every time I hear about the new 10 billion fucking spaceshit I cringe hard. Papa Trump will fix that and put that money back in the economy.

These are his words on how he is going to act. The talk about autism is what he believes. I think that what matters is how he is going to act and I see nothing wrong having the government officials in charge to at least re-think how often certain shots need to be taken for children.

There is nothing wrong with that!

I am not delusional. I know that Donald Trump is not "our guy" so I only care about how he is going to act. You continue sucking Hillary's tits by attacking the minute flaws in his character by ignoring his policy. That is how useful idiots are made useful and kept idiots.

Policy promises made during campaigns are cheap as free, a.k.a. they're not binding commitments; they are quite close to meaningless, especially for those without any party commitments.

I judge peoples' future behavior by what I can observe of their behavior in the present. If I were hiring someone to work for me, inability to behave like an adult during the interview would be disqualifying.

But that means you can run up a huge millions of votes lead in a state you already won and you don't get any additional electoral votes for doing it, while if you lose in another state by a 51-49 margin that guy can get more electoral votes than you.

Also NASA doesn't send money to mars you knuckle dragger. It gets spent on the space project. Most of that goes to American engineers, technicians and operators. There are always more blue collar workers than white. So under funding NASA is taking money directly out of the hands of really smart and hardworking people from all walks of life. It also is useful for shit like satellites? We have to pay the fucking russians to put our private industry stuff into space because congress quit funding nasa so the Saturn V program shut down.

This will all make sense after you finish high school.

Not much.
Education would reduce his voter base, he's going to be against it. Funding stuff that relies on education seems like it would take away from the big 'national building' projects that he's going to do to a) build jobs temporarily and b) give to his own companies to siphon taxes into his pocket.

Pence is also pretty anti-science and I expect him (as the more experienced on policy) to be holding Donalds hand for the first few months, likely introducing him to everyone's favorite pro-religion, anti-science think tanks to get his info from.

Donald has made it abundantly clear that he is a confirmation bias seeking fool. Which people he surrounds himself with to get information will determine the future of this country and I suspect he is going to make some very dumb choices in that regard

I sincerely hope I am wrong, but the guy has basically lived on a twitter echo chamber and doesn't show any signs of reading or listening to people's opinions that differ from his worldview. That worked out great for getting him elected, so why would he suddenly change?

Traditionally yes, this cycle had the Dems being the business party. Trump represents a populist coup that seized control of the party, hence a lot of, not all, big business influence went to support Clinton.

That was actually a negative for her, because there is a growing animosity toward the business sector of our country. This is true on both the left and the right, Trump felt the shift and Clinton did not. It's ironic in a way, the business mogul led a rhetorical revolt against business interests. How this will play out in terms of policy though is another matter. The house and senate are still largely dominated by the old guard GOP who do support business interests and Trump himself may very well show that his allegiance actually lies there as well.

A Trump presidency can only mean bad things for science.

This man openly believes that vaccines cause autism. He has a public disdain for science and intellectualism, and there will be a general public trend toward this (even more than before) because these beliefs are now completely out of the closet. He will work to reverse all progress against climate change. He said in an 89-word Reddit post that he "loves NASA," yet elsewhere he says "right now we have bigger problems - we need to fix our potholes." He's all over the place, which is bad news for any kind of stable support to NASA (or, really, any other scientific agencies).

As for evolution vs. creationism, he says "I believe in both." Personally, I don't think he cares much about evolution, as his religious-right platform was relatively low-key in comparison to his appeal to xenophobia. Evolution has little to do with his "plan" to build a wall.

He's gonna rape a trainful of african babies with brain cancer if it serves his agenda.
But that doesn't mean he's gonna do any favors for corporations once he's the president.
The best way to secure oneself in the seat of power is and always was to MAKE THE COUNTRY _OBJECTIVELY_ BETTER and not let elite oppress the people.

For the people ITT who aren't already aware, Trump's ideology with respect to NASA is to pull them out of Earth science and focus the association entirely on space -- which I don't find disagreeable at all, nor do my (few) connects at NASA. I think better allocation of NASA resources could spell a lot for the US in terms of space exploration. NASA has fallen onto hard times over the last decade or so as they receive a lot of their funding (which is already very limited) under the premise that they'll dedicate their services to Earth science.

It's understandable that the republican candidate is viewed as the one who is afraid of scientific progress, but a lot of us in the field don't believe Trump to fall into this category regardless of who we voted for.

You are putting words into people's mouths. It's a simple idea that has a profound effect on individual beliefs, society, and how we view the world as a whole (or divided, as it stands today). Tribalism is a very simple concept with complicated underpinnings in the brain's evolutionary biology. It is what allows Trump to make incredibly disgusting claims about any group of people outside of white christian men, and still become the POTUS.

If you really want to answer ALL of the questions of why anyone voted for him at all, of course the answer is nuanced. But we're talking about why he was elected, and that's because a lot of uneducated white people instinctively chose their group, and "voted their subconscious". They don't think about it, they don't reason about it, they just know what end they need, and the details will come later.

That's not how budgets work in this country. NASA gets a budget from Congress telling them exactly what they will spend on Earth Science. They have no say in the matter and it doesn't hurt other projects to fund Earth Science within NASA. If NASA was told to shut down Earth Sciences tomorrow their budget would fall because they would lose that money, legally they are not allowed to spend it on anything else. True, but not in the stages of presiding over the budget; however, which is what I'm referring to. At the start of every fiscal year, the budget is in appropriation stages which go through congressional channels as well as executive. At this point of the process, federal resources are granted to general endeavors (EPA, DoD, CDC, etc) rather than specific movements within a department. It's at this point where receiving funding for something like Earth science negatively impacts NASA's funding for space exploration. The initial budget requests that congress drafts are holistic and heavily influenced by funding from the previous year. It's not unlikely to suggest that NASA's internal budget for space exploration will increase, even if they receive a cut (since federal pressure for Earth science is removed). But of course, there's also a chance that they simply lose all of the Earth science budget and receive no additional budget bump, but I'd like to think that wouldn't happen.

The president's initial budget request is only a suggestion. It gives the president an opportunity to propose ideas and programs that he/she would like to see enacted, most of all. Congress actually drafts their own entirely at this stage too, before presiding over the one submitted by the OMB. http://www.acenet.edu/news-room/Pages/A-Brief-Guide-to-the-Federal-Budget-and-Appropriations-Process.aspx

My argument is that when they sit down to lay out the distribution of the federal budget, it's more unusual for a department to *lose* money out of their budget than to gain or remain the same in the following year (unless they were wildly unsuccessful). So if NASA gets a cut from earth sciences, I'm imagining a scenario where they get some of that money back to be likely. We'll have to wait and see though.

>The president's initial budget request is only a suggestion. It gives the president an opportunity to propose ideas and programs that he/she would like to see enacted, most of all. Congress actually drafts their own entirely at this stage too, before presiding over the one submitted by the OMB.
You are again missing the point. At the stage when Congress sink their teeth into the Request is is broken down by program. Changing budgets on individual programs at this point does not affect other programs, for example in the last 2 years congress added money above the request to planetary science. Other programs were not affected.

>it's more unusual for a department to *lose* money out of their budget than to gain or remain the same in the following year
Because on industry inflation. Budgets in general go up. This has nothing to do with the actual point. Entire programs being canned is not the norm, the general trend is irrelevant.

True, but she would not have put a climate change skeptic as the person to lead the charge in dismantling the EPA for starters, nor try to pull out of the Paris agreement. His science is nationalism, she would have at least left these institutions in tact, if not furthered them.

Also yeah, I'm surprised no debate brought up his comments about vaccines causing autism and the effects that would cause if he were to use political sway to get people to stop taking them, or go into detail about WHY he thinks climate change is false.
