What does /sci/ think about the current scientific literature on the subject of race and intelligence?

Are we starting to get a clear picture on the causal relationship between the two? Are socio-economic reasons and education sufficient explanation for the discrepancy? How much is nature versus nurture?

Can we do something with the information we have so far?

This was written like 20 years ago and I think we knew slightly more now. But still there's very much questions on what we're measuring, how we're measuring and how to explain stuff like Flynn effect.

It's not really a valid premise because race isn't directly taxonomical like a tree of life. Most people asking this question will have a superficial western view of race.

I.E. you're more closely related to an African than many of that African's neighbors.

"Race" is a social construct. The IQ (assuming we're talking about IQ even granted its flaws) of white people would have dropped shortly after the Irish integrated with what America considered white.

you're referencing the paper that is often quoted as saying that there's more variation within a population than between populations. that is an incorrect quotation, however. what that paper showed was that you could observe the majority of all possible alleles, in a categorical sense, in one population and >90% with any two populations. however, that paper said nothing about the distribution of those alleles within the population.

Say one group on a continent splits into two, we'll call them groups A and B. And then group A splits into two groups, We'll call them groups Aa and Ab. Say that Ab emigrated elsewhere.

Remaining are Aa and B on the original continent. If you're from group Ab, you have a more recent common ancestor with someone from Aa than someone from B would.

Yes and no. Better than we ever have, but we understand the brain so little that answers just lead to more questions at this point.

We think so, but this is murky water. You can't directly quantify the effects of discrimination and all the effects of poverty, so it's difficult to isolate them as variables. It's also difficult to define the races in a meaningful way biologically that's also meaningful to how race is perceived socially.

This is meaningless without more specifics.

Ultimately there are too many variables to get good conclusions beyond what we can get with our wide-ranging correlations. So far, in America at least, the intelligence within races varies significantly more than the averages between them.

Pretty soon we'll have a good regression model that predicts IQ using genotype. We'll then be able to see if those same associations exist within races and see how much of the difference between races is explained by differences in the frequency of those genes.

So there's no need for vague ideological squabbling about what environments and cultures can produce IQ differences. We can answer this scientifically.
