https://astronomy.com/news/2023/01/do-we-know-more-about-the-moon-than-the-deep-sea-no
>This idea has been repeated for decades by scientists and science communicators, including Sir David Attenborough in the 2001 documentary series The Blue Planet. More recently, in Blue Planet II (2017) and other sources, the Moon is replaced with Mars.
>As deep-sea scientists, we investigated this supposed “fact” and found it has no scientific basis. It is not true in any quantifiable way.
Is this actually false? We have literally mapped the surface of the Moon and Mars in great detail >>15185473. Yet we've barely mapped the ocean floor (see the Malaysian Airlines plane).

RL-10s are cheap, they're just sold for a high profit margin. The RS-68 is "cheap" compared to the RS-25, but that's not really much of a statement. The TR-106 would have been pretty cheap if anyone had ever finished it, but it was an engine without a rocket. The RD-0120 was cheap, but all Soviet shit was cheap after the wall came down.

Hydrogen is a bitch+ to work with, but it's not so bad that it makes engines impossible to make economical. Working with hydrogen isn't like working with something crazy like fluorine. If an engine is expensive it's because of something other than the fuel choice.

Yeah. They won't risk unnecessary damage to the area. The SF won't last for more than 10 seconds, I'd wager, so it'll need a minimum amount of fuel. The gay thing about this is that we will not have much of an indication for when the SF might happen. It could fill up 10 or 12% percent and then just sit there for hours and hours until they decide to go ahead or simply cancel the attempt.

The deluge system probably isn't a requirement because if they can SF for a dozen seconds or so, they've just simulated launch conditions to the pad. Also, the deluge system at Boca is going to be a lot more work than the one at 39a not only because of the digging and moving of preexisting pipes, but because they have to figure out how to get enough water pressure for the deluge system to the pipes as the currently existing options won't really work, so a new source for the water will probably need to be built like it is as 39a, but they'd need to find the space for it.

So... the 31 engine static fire confirms the following things:

1. big fucking orbital launch mounts are not necessary

2. big fucking flame trenches are not necessary

3. current water deluge system may be sufficient to handle an orbital launch assuming they can input water throughput by 2-3x (accounting for the longer duration spent by the booster on the OLM up to T+3-5 as it takes a little bit of time for the fully fueled SuperHeavy and Starship to clear the initial 10m from the OLM

4. The concrete mixture they created is sufficient for launch

What we learned today :
-SpX is confident enough to fire the engines at the first try. (Remember the old days of day-long aborts )
-5 sec of static fire ! Impressive. OLM looks fine , tower looks fine , concrete looks fine
-Launch plume will be HUGE
-We dont know how those 2 engines will affect the overall result of the test but remember that SN15 did abort the static fire in the same day they launch. The problem was the over-conservative limits

It takes 3 months during the Mars transfer window to get to Mars from Earth. Elon & Gwynne both confirmed that they want to have around 100 launches with Starship/SuperHeavy under their belt before they put humans on it. If their rate of launches increases at a rate of 10 every 6 months, then over the next 5 years, they'll get to around 300 launches. Which they'll need to do to satisfy:

1. Starlink Gen2 big bois for big $$ printers
2. HLS Demo, HLS Crew
3. In-orbit refueling demo
4. Resupply missions to ISS via Starship because lol

Also, the next Mars transfer window period doesn't start until October 2024. They can't launch any ships towards Mars, otherwise it would take 9 months to get there given the distance Mars is at currently relative to during the transfer window. This will remain perpetually a bottleneck until stable core fusion engines are created for Starship where the 3 Vacuum Raptors are eventually replaced by fusion torches basically and then the sea-level Raptors exist only for Earth; and Vacuum Raptors would be used effectively everywhere in the solar system including for Mars landing--because fusion will let us get to insane ISP second ranges and thrust values from highest to lowest.

I would suspect that Elon wants "Optimus Subprime" to get to a point where its functionally usable for the mission criteria of Mars, such that they can shit like a hold full of 25-30 of these along with a 100-125T of cargo. Assuming ship successfully lands on Mars, they'll unload and go about unpacking the cargo and setting it up. Effectively building a base along with a dedicated launch pad for human Starships on Mars while the crew arrives in subsequent vessels. End of 2024-2025 seems plausible for this to be achieved. All the while, as the ships travel to Mars with antenna pointed back to Earth, they can keep improving the bots and then push OTAs across the solar system so that when the ship(s) arrive on Mars, the bots have the latest and greatest capabilities.

Getting away from the NK-15, KORD, and then mess of plumbing they needed to feed thirty engines would have increased reliability tremendously for the first stage. We never really got a chance to see how the second stage would have wanted to fuck things up, and the second stage was where the early Protons had most of their problems.

https://ntrs.nasa.gov/

I assume that to access the registered (classified?) content of their technical data you probably have to sign an ITAR agreement, right? Probably has data that they wouldn't want Russia or China to know?

Will they even be able to have enough launch complexes to handle so many Starships? After ten years they'll have ~3650. If they can launch once per day then even if they can get each pad handling 3 launches per day they'll still need ~1200 launch platforms.

N1F would have solved the engine quality issues. KORD was always going to be an Achilles heel for the design given how low quality Soviet computer systems were. Getting the plumbing reliably reinforced could have gone either way.

Scaling up the Salyut program to the N1F's capabilities would have been amazing.

Yep could be exactly what the plasma magnet sail needs for limitless power for outer planet/Kuiper belt/SGL missions

Funny enough the report this comes from omits the plasma sail altogether and gives brief mention to magnetic sails at the end (for slower transport of cargo)... IDK if NASA Langley is just ignorant of or actively avoiding it which is ironic because in their section on Cold Fusion (LENR) they mention how people found it incredulous and "too good to be true" but they praise it.

Musk's only option would be to launch entirely from a moonbased where the FAA has no jurisdiction.
