His was 8 pages for no reason other than he loved being detailed.) At the same time he was able to get some new results specifically because he was comfortable going so far in the weeds (e.x. That every F_sigma_delta set is the set of curvilinear convergence for some continuous half plane function).

Complex analysts were somewhat interested in his work at the time, but Ted had no interest in doing anything other than boundary functions. He was kind of a one trick pony, likely because he was sick of math by the time he left Berkeley, but his contributions at the end of the day were minimal because he didn’t make connections with the rest of the community. His field of boundary functions basically disappeared in the 70s after he left.

In this particular case yes it was for no reason. In the context of the proof he just needed the indices to follow the path in the figure. Being precise about this is pedantic, especially when there's plenty of other serious math going on. This isn't like assuming Jordan curve theorem based on a picture, this is just a fucking integer sequence lmao. If it was really necessary to define a closed form, it would have been done much easier as a recursion or in a for loop or something. He uses this bizarre square root expression in a footnote (not the main body of the text) and says "The reader may find it amusing..." His PhD thesis is not on geometric function theory, I would know because I read it. (1) Boundary functions are a minuscule niche within a niche (cluster set theory)
(2) People stopped publishing about boundary functions basically as soon as Ted stopped publishing
