Not him, but what are you expecting for an answer? The model found some correlation between the pixels in the data set and the label of the picture. The correlation might be uninterpretable by humans depending on how the model is trained.
You'd have to have the access to the model to see the weights and biases and visualise them to see what it is doing but iirc they didn't publish the model so we will never know.

The model was not published so nobody knows. And it was a machine learning algorithm so it didn't have definite criteria, just subtle pixel patterns.
For all we know, the clinics in black neighbourhoods had crappier x-ray machines and the model was testing for the noise in the image and didn't care about the bone structure.

Not quite, it's more that certain patterns will cluster around certain demographics.
For example, it doesn't take a genius to realize that umbrellas are more frequently carried by people on rainy days, the AI doesn't even need to understand the causation, all it needs to do is quantify the amount of entropy that one distribution shares with the other

That's a known fact, but the AI can determine race with high accuracy of any skeletal x-ray, not just of the skull.
The working theory is because of the melanin levels in the dermis, a darker skinned person will have a reduced radiation penetration level from the x-rays. The resulting image can have a minute difference that the human eye cannot detect, but the AI can pick up on due to digital scanning of the image.
That being said, it is also common knowledge that different races have different bone/skeletal forms, so the "working theory" is most likely a coverup to protect "all men are created equal" so funding into the AI isn't canceled.

Same principle with the law of averages, the AI compares a data sample to a set of standards it itself generates from the data it scrounges. There are superficial differences in skeletons within the different races, especially the density which the AI can easily measure even with visual data alone.

I can tell races apart based on how their hands and feet look. Blacks have the weirdest looking hands and feet. They look completely different from everybody else's, even when you control for skin tone. Europeans and East Asians have slightly different features between their hands. I find that East Asian women tend to have the sexiest hands and feet.
