Why the fuck do there even need to be nerve endings in teeth? They literally cause more harm than good. The pain they cause is not proportional to their importance.

>> No.9994807

Presumably they warn you against breaking your teeth on bone and wood. Or ice, nowadays.

I see the purpose of these informative nerves, what I don't understand is why the hell do we have our emotions directly linked to these things, including pain/discomfort to the point you can die from it (heart attacks, unconsciousness, anxiety attack, adrenaline, sugar rush)

This is tantamount to saying "why does pain exist?", which is obviously retarded. Your mouth is one of the highest traffic areas on your body, being able to gather information about what you put in it is useful.

>which is obviously retarded

Why though? Surely there must have been another way of informing you of damage or risk of damage to your body without the suffering that comes with it?

Pain is the worst thing about life. It's so inefficient. It's not even precise. You can feel chronic debilitating pain even when people wíth over 10 years of medicine experience, modern CT/MRI machines, ultrasound, blood tests can't detect anything. The pain is even in the way of treating injuries which is why surgery is done with pain shut off.

I hope it's just me being ignorant but I don't get why pain treatment is not the #1 issue in science. It's strange to me that people are worrying about aging and want to live longer before the issue of pain is solved.

How else would your body react efficiently to it if it wasn't at all aversive? I think damage pathways by definition need to be like that. aversive, highly arousing, stimulating of quick action - suffering.

That kind of pain you're talking about is a disease.

Because without a sudden emotional shock, you're liable to ignore it... And since language is learned, rather than instinctual, your brain can't really take some time out to explain the dilemma to itself.

If you wanna talk about neurological responses that a generally detrimental, just consider yourself lucky you're not one of those other mammals with a much lower pain tolerance that goes into shock from such stimulus.

(Also just see your dentist and get it fucking over with.)

It should be like in video games. You should just feel where the injury is and then decide for yourself whether to ignore it or not. So if you need to do something painful to survive you are not held down by your fear of pain.

I am probably being irrational but fuck I just hate pain so much.

I liked chewing on bones from dinner as a kid, but my parents made me stop when my adult teeth started coming in

>> No.9995608

>>9995597
Cooked bones become brittle and can easily splinter. Which is why you don't feed cooked bones to pets. The splinters can get caught in their throat. Eating bones is fine, but damn I can't imagine allowing a child to eat them without some sort of good discussion about proper chewing so they don't get splinters caught. As an adult, you can munch away all you want on bones and it will strengthen your teeth. If you have dental work, avoid chewing with those teeth. In fact, if you grew up chewing on bones and continued it into adulthood your teeth will be healthier all around.

>>9995390
Pain is pretty efficient. Teeth are extremely important. Without them you can die of starvation in the wild. Thankfully, humans know how to pre-masticate their food with tools and cooking. Thus, knowing when there's a problem with your teeth helps you survive.

What you really need to think about is why you are having pain with your teeth, if it is not related to chewing on something you shouldn't be chewing on. Because modern man has a shit load more problems with their teeth than cultures without our shitty diets.

>The pain they cause is not proportional to their importance.

Tf u talkin about nigga. There are literally animals that die of starvation when their teeth fall out. Your teeth reflect your health - especially your diet. Our ancestors didn't have half the problems we do because there was no processed sugars in their diets. Nearly every part of the body has some sort of feedback system - the teeth are no different. The pain isn't just there to cause an inconvenience. It is there to tell you that something is wrong. Like other animals, we use our mouths as a 5th "appendage" sometimes (to hold onto stuff, etc). But imagine what it would be like if we felt no pain cracking teeth opening a beer bottle? There would be no mechanism to tell you to not try something stupid like that again. Your mouth is prone to all sorts of nasty infections - not something to be ignored. Teeth also have blood supply and require nutrients to function, they are not merely there for mechanical purposes. You can replace your teeth with dentures, but dentures are not indestructible either and require very frequent maintenance (more so than natural teeth).

I guess OP would be pro Leprosy. That's an ailment that inability to sense pain in extremities, resulting in damage and loss of limbs due to not being able to receive the pain feedback.
