I would argue that his biblical and alchemical writing was a good thing. See, science back in his day was shit. No one really knew anything, and science was carried on the back of trial and error mixed with experimentation, and a couple of geniuses whose genius only helped them guess right more often than the average person. And when you are trying to solve a big problem, but have no idea of how to proceed or what to do, sometimes the best thing you can do is just keep yourself occupied and keep your brain turned on. For Newton, this was writing about skydaddy. In our modern day, there is enough real science that we can entertain ourselves with better subjects but it is still the same thing. Same reason people take coffee breaks. Same reason people seek out entertainment. Etc. etc.

You can't just expect a person to be working on something at full potential all day every day, especially since the learning process probably works with the brain reward system, and working on similar things all the time everyday reduces the reward for the process and causes you not to learn more in the extra hours you put in. In his down time I image he used religion to cope with death and shit like that, since there was no other thing to do at the time when everyone else around you is a brainlet
