Seeing a lot of Elon Musk hatred on here recently. Shame on you /sci/. He is the man who will open up the stars to humanity.

>> No.9989696

No hate, just sceptical about his deadlines, and the fact that at one point they probably have to scale it down because things dont add up.

>> No.9991275

>>9989598

Wasn't he always a meme, though? Did anybody here ever look at that man and go 'yep, nothing about this man is humorous'.

I may disagree with the guy on a lot, but his achievements and other upsides means that he is overall a benefit to humanity.

Yeah, ofcourse its bullshit.
But spaceX has a close relationship with nasa, and nasa has multiple versions&working prototypes of about everything you need to keep a crew alive in space for a long time.
And if the BFR actually works, then the only part of spaceX in the mars mission will be spaceX building the booster and the outside hull of the ship.

If most cosmic rays and solar wind are blocked by earth's magnetosphere, why wouldn't placing electromagnets around the crew section and power them to a few micro-Teslas be sufficient for most radiation dangers?

>> No.9991426

>>9991380
>If most cosmic rays and solar wind are blocked by earth's magnetosphere
They aren't, they're blocked by the atmosphere. That's why airline pilots get significant levels of radiation dosage, since they spend many many hours above a large fraction of the mass of the atmosphere.

>> No.9992775

>>9991380
It would. Cosmic rays are mostly charged particles.

Wrong, Crew Dragon has life support, they are working on life support systems since at least 2013.

It would not, cosmic rays are charged but also very high energy and omnidirectional. Electromagnetic shielding is just not viable, it takes a huge amount of energy to cover even small volume.

First of all, Musk talks big but in the end, the only reason half his businesses are a success is because he’s such a huge meme amongst the common populace. Vertical take off and landing vehicles have been around for years and spacex WAS NOT, the first to do it. The only reason the business is also booming is because they receive government subsidies. The Hyperloop idea has been around for around a hundred years and even then musk has barely done anyhing with his dumb fucking company, other than bore a small tunnel. The guy is a captain of industry, NOT a scientific or engineering genius.

>> No.9992792

>>9991278
>One big feature they totally forgot for going to mars is radiation shielding.

Radiation shielding for a Mars mission will consist of a solar storm shelter located most likely in the center of the ship, surrounded by supplies. You need like 1 ton per square meter of mass to shield against even the largest solar flares.

As for cosmic rays, there will likely be no shielding against them because you need many tons per square meter and it is just too much mass. The solution will be a fast trajectory (3-5 months), which is enough to keep cancer rate increase at manageable several %.

Radiation will not stop a Mars mission.

>> No.9992795

>>9992789
>spacex WAS NOT, the first to do it

VTVL toy rockets existed since the 60s, but nobody cares about that triviality. SpaceX was the first to do it for an orbital class booster lifting an actual payload, and the first to do it in an economical manner. They deserve all the credit they get for it.

>> No.9992824

Fuck no. Earth's magnetic field can block cosmic rays due to extreme distances. It's micro teslas over thousands of kilometers which is enough to deflect charged particles. For smaller things we need stronger magnetic fields. Artificial magnetospheres may be possible though. Most of the constraints come from keeping superconductors cool.

>> No.9992829

> Earth's magnetic field can block cosmic rays due to extreme distances.

It cannot even do that, vast majority of cosmic rays are blocked by our atmosphere. Magnetosphere only redirects some low energy cosmic rays and solar protons.

Water actually works well for shielding. Since you're gonna need a lot of it to keep your crew alive it would be best keep it stored in the outer walls.

It would be best to keep the parts where humans spend the most time near the inner part of the ship and storage + places where people need to be the least near the outer walls.

The LEM was made by Grumman, Rocketdyne made the F-1 engines for the Saturn V, and many other PRIVATE companies designed different parts for NASA's ships. The astronauts aboard apollo pissed into bags using a device created by a condom manufacturer. Having more companies is a good thing you brainlet.
