FlashCards are useful for specific and structured data. Especially when used with some sort of mnemonic. Mind maps are laughable and more for communicating with others/teaching.

The absolute best way I've found to study is to read cover to cover through the text book, and for every paragraph translate in your own words, using metaphors from your own life for the concept being described. It takes fucking hours, (maybe 2-3 weeks of 8 hours a day transcriptions/exercises)... but it's a free pass to top the class and get an extremely solid understanding of what the fuck is ACTUALLY going on as opposed to just knowing how to do the calculations.

The best part of doing that is that you can do it alone.

Just avoid all your classes. Still have a better understanding of the subject matter than anyone else who went to those classes... shame the professor when he compares your attendance to your grades.
