Any post-undergrads here who study math on their own and didn't go to grad school? I don't think I can mentally handle the stress of graduate school, but I want to learn more math. How do you guys stay discipline/motivated?

>get a job that pays for grad classes
>take evening classes at your local university or take online classes
It's that easy

I find it is helpful to have a space away from computers and TVs for studying. Forcing yourself into a space where there is nothing to do but study is the first step in my opinion. Then just set goals for yourself. For example today I’m going to read through all of chapter 20 and write out summary’s for each example. Tomorrow I will do all of the even problems and rewrite summary’s from memory. The next day I will do all odd problems and re write all summary’s from memory. The next day I will work up a presentation on the information in chapter 20 and videotape myself giving the presentation. One week from now I will rewatch the presentation and compare it to my summary’s for proof of accuracy.

If you really want to get good you should spend the rest of that week trying to expand on what was in chapter 20 by yourself. It is good for mathematical creativity and it makes the exercise of learning more rewarding because you made something while doing it.

I'm an idiot who has a lot to learn and need to work hard to learn it
rather then
I'm a smart person who needs to prove to this grad school how smart I am

If you manage to swollow enough of your ego to pull this off it should releave a lot of stress at least. You're lowering the bar of success/failure by doing it. Pretty much what >>9976519 and >>9976528 are trying to convey.

Yes OP, this is literally me and I literally do this for pleasure. I dink around with baby-tier stuff and frankly stuff I should have learned in undergrad but didn't. Personal interest: mostly history of math as opposed to actual math. I haven't really been at it for some time as I've found other amusements.

I don't know how to say motivated but 3-5 hours a day are enough to learn a decent amount if you want to, just try to get a job with that allows you to study 1-2 hours on the job and 1-2 at home and you still have some time to pursue bitches, that's how I pretent to carry it with physics (have a bachelors) since I don't like school
