is there any mathematical way to justify the common valuation of chess pieces?

>knight=3
>bishop=3
>rook=5
>queen=9

did somebody derive this or something? or is it just some rule-of-thumb? honestly i think it is kind of BS since bishops are much more useful in the endgame than knights...

If i'm not mistaken he is 3 times IMO gold medallist, solved all the hard problems but didn't solve easy problems

2012 p4 is very easy but he didn't solve it, instead he solve the difficult p3
2013 p6 is difficult he solved it but didn't solve the easy p3
2014 p6 is the most difficult problem of 2014, he solve it but didn't sovle p5
