Everything you said is wrong. The Outer Space Treaty forbids the "harmful contamination" of celestial bodies. There is no court on the planet that would view terraforming endeavors to constitute harmful contamination, when the purpose is to render the planet more, rather than less, livable.

Also, Article 16 specifies the withdrawal procedure from the treaty, which amounts to simply announcing it in writing and waiting a year. No strings attached. Every international treaty can be withdrawn from, m8. The countries that would most benefit from claiming space objects happen to be the only ones who can actually enforce that treaty. That shit will go out the window as soon as the space colonization and industrialization race starts, don't you worry.

Look, just forget about this bullshit Mars or Venus bullshit. Given our technology, global politics and social culture, its not going to happen. Nor are sustainable space habitats in orbit. You may as well paint a scenario where Medieval era people are faced with a massive asteroid collision that will wipe out all life, and then ask them to band together and find a way of living in space or on another planet. It is simply beyond their capabilities.

So let us consider the plausible scenarios.

Now first you must understand our universal economic system. All economic growth, all our financial systems, all our prosperity and wealth, is based ultimately on one thing alone: Population growth.

Scenerio 1. Environmental degradation continues to the point where it severely hinders population growth, the economy stagnates, the global standard of living declines. The environment stabilizes. We all end up living in a less densely populated world, but technological progress stalls and average life expectancy drops.

Scenario 2. Population growth remains unchecked until environmental degradation reaches a critical point. The population then suffers a J curve event, and declines to per-industrial era levels. The resources that were once available in the 19th century no longer exist in sufficient quantities to permit a return to 20th century levels of prosperity.

Scenario 3. The environmental degradation becomes so extreme that Earth suffers a catastrophic extinction event with over 90% of all species vanishing. There is no human recovery from this. The Earth eventually recovers after a prolonged period stretching into the tens, maybe hundreds, of millions of years. New species arise and perhaps some of them become self aware.

Scenario 1b. This follows up on Scenario 1. Following the decline described in Scenario 1 groups of people formulate new political and social structures that aim to limit the environmental destruction and if possible, reverse it.

On other hand, I can only base my sentiments on moral reasonings and I know it will not be the same for some people. Extremely unlikely for scenario 1b. The past 50 years have proven that despite the information so readily available the general population remains relatively uneducated and unwilling to make life style changes necessary to prevent further environmental degradation. Such efforts that have been made are trivial and fleeting, the gains always under revision and susceptible to further attack, and furthermore being mostly restricted to western countries. The reflection of how the environment is still not being taken seriously enough is demonstrated in the politics and the intransigence of the overwhelming majority of countries.

We have reached the stage where even if the general population was aware we are nearing the tipping point the necessary political and economic changes needed, which would have to be enforced globally, would take too long to be effective.

TLDR. We are fucked.

Some groups recognize this and have either given up in attempts to reverse from the tipping point, or have always acted selfishly, and are already making preparations for scenario 2

It now requires a complete societal and economic collapse to permit the social/political/economic conditions where this situation does not arise again in the far future. This may take varied forms and is difficult to predict. Some future societies may develop an ingrained resistance to change, be it technological or otherwise, and survive on subsistence levels with a low impact level of technology. Such societies will in effect become technologically stagnant. Other societies may recognize the need for a benevolent technocracy which oversees the environment and places controls on most aspects of daily life pertaining to resource allocation, consumption and population growth. A Green dictatorship, so to speak, one which is willing to enforce its ideals and standards globally, by wars of conquest if necessary.

In any case, it will be a very different way of life and form of society.
