If you unironically believe that one of the biggest guys is a hack and a failure, why don't you just revolutionize the field with your wisdom? I mean, if the bar is so low then certainly a genius like you would immediately rise to the top.

It's not, but it's supposed to be exclusively about employment. The bottom layer should involve nothing more than money and shelter. The second layer shouldn't have security of body. The third layer shouldn't have sexual intimacy.

I wonder. Maslow's Hierarchy seems to generally hold true, but one wonders if it should've been presented in a philosophical context rather than a psychological/scientific context.

Because for some of us, the need for self-actualization precedes the need for recognition and materialistic things.

Okay, let's take this to the logical conclusion. Assuming that you are not bullshitting yourself, what will you do once you have self-improved yourself enough? Do you actually have a goal? Any goal at all? Or are you just "self-improving" without reason or direction?

Sounds like you might benefit from a bit of self-analysis. I recommend you take a day to yourself and just think about the formation of your ethics and personal beliefs. How am I justifying them? Where did I get them? Do I know of any factors that might have influenced that development? Pretty simple stuff that can lead to more objective thinking.

Ah, poor simpleton. Your intellectual capabilities are better suited to pedestrian sci-fi flashy light CGI spectacles than any kind of critical analysis of yourself or, in this case, others.

You can associate cooperatively with other individuals without any sense of love or belonging. Not all people can, of course - there are plenty of brainlets and plebs who let their emotions rule their minds - but it can be done by anyone worthwhile.

It is obviously completely wrong in its generalisation, and anyone with a PhD would attest to that.

Doing a PhD means physiological "needs" such as food and sleep is of secondary importance to the achievement of completing that PhD project. Also sex and health even self esteem are of less than secondary importance.

And when you have that PhD and start your post doc career you should by now realise that security of body, employment, family and health are still secondary if not tertiary to getting tenure.

Maslow was a hack and anyone who doubts this has no idea what a PhD is about.

>> No.9944595

Yes. And I did quite a few contributions to the lab disaster threads we had last year or so. I have been poisoned, electrocuted and irradiated, multiple times. I did a few rounds of post doc and experienced first hand to lack of job security. Pay was so low that grills had no interest and in any case you could not afford one. After paying for accommodation, food, transport and paying off my student loan I had pretty much nothing left. No smoking, no alcohol and hardly any social life. As a post doc you need to grind out enough papers to get tenure even if it means you have to live in the lab.

I cannot see this combination. Life as a PhD student is normally miserable but I am happy I survived with only minor permanent damages to my health. And vanity? Where did that come from? I just can't see people with vanity issues staying on for the entire PhD just to put two letters in front of their name.

Trouble with reading comprehension? The PhD time was miserable and was for everyone I knew. Life now is pretty comfy. And strictly speaking I never said I got the PhD.
