Not yet, I'm getting into aero-related course material this coming semester. I'm doing ROTC so hopefully once I get my degree I can fly planes for a job. Internships give tons of opportunities to do that sort of thing, but there are also "flight studies" majors at some unis. Not very useful, but you get lots of involvement with aircraft. Lots of jobs in non-aircraft development, but do well so you get to choose your job not the other way around.

Life isn't a straight line. There are many people in university who've seen some shit and have hard lives trying to reach their goals. Their efforts in taking 3 courses a semester while working a job are no less significant than someone with a full ride because they had a cozy life.

I agree with most of the things you say, but that does not mean that making less than total commitment is acceptable. If someone is serious about their career and making a better life for themselves, then they will work as hard as they possibly can on their degree. There is one thing I disagree with:
>a bachelor's degree is still a bachelor's degree
Do you honestly believe that the brilliant student who graduated in 3 years with research experience is equally qualified as the dim student who graduated in 7 years while working part time at a fast food place? Given the same GPA? The guy working at the fast food place is going to be seen as having enough wisdom to understand what he can handle and what he cannot. STEM is a career you do till you pretty much drop dead, a few extra years to get your undergrad mean fuck all.

Thanks for the (You).
Age will stop to matter when you are not applying to entry level positions. There is a noticeable difference between an enthusiastic bright-eyed 22 year old and an older jaded 27 year old, you can see it in the interview. However, a 32 year old and a 37 year old applying for a higher-up position will make less of a difference, they'll both be early-middle aged. 5 years matters less at that age.

Actually this was supposed to be a shitpost but you've now definitely made me considere this scenario from an employer's perspective. I guess the decision would be a factor of the nature of the job itself, the company and interview performance.

Still, I'm slightly inclined to say that work experience and interpersonal skills would play a significant factor in the decision, all others things being comparable or equal.

Yeah, this is my point. Basically, imagine you are the project manager of some engineers or scientists:
>hire the guy who seems socially collected but has a worse resume and might need training
or
>hire the guy who is a clear autist going neck deep in the technical details but will probably need no managing to be motivated for work

I am not even really trying to say that older means worse, as much as I am saying that young people with a ton of qualifications tend to be unusually hard workers.

Turboautists should be given a fair shake more often. They've never been able to expect success and rewards to simply fall into their lap like the socially gifted, so they've learned to fight for every inch and take an insane amount of personal ownership of their field and professional development.

It's one thesis, workload is 6,9,15 ECTS and you take 1 in 1st year and 2 in 2nd year. All courses but model theory are 5 ECTS, model theory is 3 ECTS.
Max workload is 65 ECTS/year by default, but since i did good in undergrad my yearly limit is 75 ECTS.
Listed are all mandatory courses as suggested by advisors - you take all mandatory courses in winter semester and take thesis 1 in summer semester, plus electives to fill out the ECTS limit for your degree (120 ECTS in 2 years for MSc) in either semester. Second year is thesis 2 + electives in winter semester and thesis 3 + electives (if you still have any ECTS left) in winter semester.

okay that makes more sense, is there any meaning behind ECTS credits? in my uni in the US 5 credit hours would mean you spend 5 hours in the class each week. Whether it's 1 hr every weekday or one 5 hr sessions or two 2.5 hr session. Just wondering because was thinking of applying to some euro unis for my masters in photonics like ET Zurich, EPFL, and some Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters

if you are in engineering and your uni is ABET accreddited it is fine for getting a job. If you want to go to grad school then any R1 or R2 state school is fine. If you cant get into your dream grad school from that than it is entirely your fault. I for one am glad I went to a third rate uni for free rather than some out of state or private uni like my high school friends (MIT, caltech, berkeley) that are in $100k+ of debt as we all now go to the same grad school

>> No.9895148

ECTS isn't as clear, it differs by country and even by uni. Basically 60 ECTS should add up to 1600-1800 hours on my uni, and my semester has 12 weeks so 1 ECTS is roughly 2.3 hours weekly on my uni. This includes class, assignments, studying, etc.
Also, don't do Erasmus, it's trash unless you're from utterly trash uni.
If you want to get to ETH you better attend an ivy-tier uni in burgerland and/or get some letters of recommendation, your undergrad honestly sucks in comparison.

>> No.9895172

is erasmus that bad? i was interest because it could be free and a nice time traveling through 2-3 universities. ETH I think I am alright but my courses might not be enough. Theirs seems to be much more broad for EE (more emphasis on CS, Math) where as mine is more specialized for my subject (photonics, optics) as my whole last two years are focused on it. My GPA, gre, research, and internships should be good enough other wise

>> No.9895218

>>9895172
All my highschool friends regret doing Erasmus.
I know how my uni treats Erasmus students - even though it's one of the better unis in EU, the requirements for Erasmus kids are ridiculously low. A friend of mine, doing PhD in CS at the same uni taught Erasmus kids one of the programming classes and the potatoes zipped a whole workspace folder created by their editor when they were supposed to zip just the source files and a makefile, there was one guy who just zipped some XML file created by his editor. Also rampart plagiarism.
They all passed the class for "diplomatic reasons" while regular enrolled students would be thrown out after pulling that shit 3 weeks into semester.
Good luck on the ETH though, competition is very tough there.

My degrees are in mathematics at University of California. You can think whatever you want of our education system. Truth is that people from all over the world want to be there for whatever reasons. Hate it if you want, I don't care.

>>9911346
Did you take those units at a community college? If so, then at least you didn't waste your money, only your time.

>>9911472
I'm a PhD student now. I would wrangle an undergrad if any of them were willing to work hard on academics. A lot of them are just thinking about money. I don't blame them for that, but I can't really help fund people who aren't personally interested in the material. The research would just slow down more than I'd like.

I won't argue that other places are just are leftist. UCSC is soaking in sjw nonsense though. Our humanities programs (except for philosophy) are more of a joke than anywhere in the world. There is literally no academic spirit or rigor to it. All the PhD students take 7 years and many aren't even funded. Literature is the worst, and the undergrads in humanities are easily some of the dumbest people I've met. I don't know if that is any different from other schools though.

If you can get into a PhD program directly after doing a bachelors, you can technically get a masters. Let me explain, let's say you pass your candidacy and finish all the requirements for a masters, but decide that you do not want to finish the PhD. Most institutions will let you leave with a masters degree. There's really no point in formally doing a Masters if you can just get into a Phd program right away.

Schools like U Alabama and small liberal arts schools count as middle-of-the-road, right? Still, being *the* top performer at a school like the former, a huge school which gives merit aid to attract top talent seems a little daunting.
T. Kinda smart student without the extracurriculars necessary for a top school (different high school each year), 3.5 high school GPA, and a 1500 SAT.
I'm looking at Bama because it gives the best aid with a 3.5 GPA cutoff, but all of it's best programs (such as the main source of undergrad research) are selective and available only to incoming freshmen. They'll look for extracurriculars and high school research, see that I have none of either, and, well, you get the idea.
