Btw, I also scored 140 on RAADS-R (The Ritvo Autism Asperger Diagnostic Scale Revised) which I took with my therapist. A score of 70 or higher indicates some degree of autism. Yeah, me too. I feel like I could compensate more when I was younger. I have better understanding now at 27, but my execution sucks. I feel like my sweet spot between having the time to develop coping strategies and being young in non-demanding environment was at ca 20. Environment got more and more demanding through college for me and at some point my coping strategies just didn't do it anymore. I got depressed and anxious. I am gonna try to build new coping strategies though. I am somewhat positive. Many people with autism report positive development with social interactions and other aspects into late adulthood.

Diagnosed as little kid. Is autism even really a thing though? It seems like a diagnosis for a set of personality traits. Different personalities tend to face different challenges and obstacles in the world, but if you can function in society then I'd define you as not having a disorder.

Not sure, I think it is very personal and differs from person to person. If you don't get the diagnosis it could be nice to have it ruled out. If you get the diagnosis it could be both good and bad. If you are in need of social benefits, then it would be easier to acquire it with a diagnosis. A diagnosis could also make it easier to treat stuff like depression and anxiety, at least that is what my therapist argued when she wanted to screen me. I was refusing because I didn't think it was relevant for me, and I am still not sure if I did the right decision about going through with it. It could change your identity, start viewing yourself in a different manner which could lead to some undesirable outcomes. That was partially what I was afraid of, and still is.

Yes, I agree, for those who understand and care about numbers. A lot of autistics don't care about numbers though, but have repetitive traits in other domains. It is also a point that numbers is of technical and concrete nature, which is characteristics often said to be enjoyed by autistics. Temple Grandin has done some work in trying to identify how autistic people think. She came up with three main categories.

- VISUAL THINKERS (thinks in concrete pictures and often love art)
- MUSIC AND MATH THINKERS (thinks in patterns, kind of like an abstract version of visual thinkers)
- VERBAL LOGIC THINKERS (interested in lists, numbers, facts and details of subjects/things , may be good at learning new languages)

So I would speculate that verbal/logic thinkers are the most likely to be purely interested in numbers, then music/math thinkers, and then the visual thinkers as the least interested in numbers.

I'm INTP and I enjoy social situations. Not really talking to people, just listening to the thrum of conversation and feeling a warm atmosphere. People having a comfortable good time like that makes me have a good time. That isn't so say I don't actively go out of my way to avoid talking to people. Why so harsh? Those with high functioning autism often have recurrent depression and crippling anxiety. A major depressive episode and/or increased anxiety can wreck your coping skills since they often are dependent on intellectual and conscious processing of social situations.
