normally you wont get cortisone creams over the counter only against a prescription, and when you get a prescription you'll also be told how many times per day

usually its 1x in the morning 1x in the evening sometimes only 1x per day for 1-2 weeks and then tapering it off

you'll see immediate improvement with it, but even then you should still continue to use it and not stop (otherwise you will have to use more cortisone in total because you'll relapse)

no, these reviews are usually just spam (just like 99% of papers in medicine and biology), don't bother reading them or worrying because of them

Hi guys, which is the principal difference in ALS and multiple sclerosis? My father was diagnosed with ALS in last year October. However, he's married with some bitch who is with him only for money and she has been waiting all this years for his dead, so she take him to shitty doctors and doesn't take care of him in a proper way. I heard that ALS is really worse than MS, and that people die way more quickly. Although, my dad in November was in a wheelchair already, and he doesn't get really worse since then.
I asked people who had relatives with ALS and they said that is really visible how they get worse. So I was thinking that maybe he had MS, is that possible? Thanks.

Also if takes like 20,000 PVC a day to cause cardiomyopathy and even then it's reversible.

You can order an ECG that works with a smartphone these days (I use Kardia, theres probably others)

It is anecdotal but I have found supplemental magnesium helps when I rarely get palpitations

Also you should know that even in very healthy people like soldiers most have some PVC/PAC on 24hr bolter.

I think cyclists also get then more often.

Co-worker of mine went from some hundreds of PAC or more per day to Zero by cutting out caffeine , stress and exercise.

mcat and gpa are by far the most important thing.

Major in something bitch tier since you're number one goal is mcat and gpa by far.

Then it's research. Look at professors at your school or nearby hospitals that have a shit ton of pubs. At this stage fuck impact you need just pubs. In a perfect world you would do either case reviews or meta analysis on some database.

Then you need some volunteering(clinical and nonclinical). So some that is near a patient and others that aren't. I did EMT and homeless shelter work but again this is not as important.

Then finally for least important, you need some shadowing not really a lot but some.

Finally if your also autistic like me you might find yourself about to apply and think fuck I need to get 3 letters of rec. You'll need two sci profs and one nonsci. Try to talk to professors.

If you can do all that you'll get in. None of it is all that hard it's just a lot

Not this guy but I assume exercise will lead to better vascularization thus increasing the total area of capillaries which should result in a decrease of BP if I remember physiology right.
Regular sport can take your BP down about 10 mmHg.

High-intensity will lead to hypoxia which stimulates angiogenesis so in theory yes, but only if the reason I stated is correct. Idk senpai

Nursing student here. Halfway done.

I hate it so much.

>course content

The program has like 20% actual science courses and the rest are bullshit courses about being nice and caring and following administrative nonsense. And the science that we do learn is heavily dumbed down. We barely learn any of the actual details. Ask a nursing student what insulin does and they'll tell you that it decreases blood glucose and that's about it because that's all they need to know to do their jobs.

>course load

It is jam-packed. You will have no free time. Not because it's difficult. They just give you thousands of BS assignments to do. Essays where you write about how much you care for someone. Group projects where you make skits and paintings showing how much you care. And then there's all the clinical hours and lab hours where you just stand around doing nothing, occasionally wiping an ass here and there or giving someone some Tylenol.

>peers

The vast majority of nurses are female. The males are mostly effeminate fags. In class, you'll see lots of hot girls so that's a plus. In the hospital, you'll see mostly fat ugly old hags. 1% if the class is filled with people like me: people who didn't study hard enough to get into med school.

>the pay

Everybody always talks about how nurses make decent money but it's all relative. We have the second nastiest job, topped only by personal support workers. Pharmacists make more, physicians make way more.

>respect

Don't let anybody say otherwise, nurses do not get respect. Nobody thinks of a "nurse" as a badass. Is it called Nurse Strange? Nurse Doom? Nurse Fate? No, they're all Doctors. You ever see nurses being interviewed on TV? No, only doctors. Do you see anybody calling for a nurse in a public emergency? No, only doctors. And for the most part, it makes sense because we really don't know what to do in an emergency. 5% of the answers on the NCLEX are "Notify the physician". One note when you do a bitch term major you have to be really commited to med school because if you aren't your prospects of getting a job afterward are kinda shit. But things like psychology, sociology, nutritional biochem, medical anthropology. Figure out what science classes premeds take to increase their gpa and take those.

Pub's are publications in research when you get good results or discover something novel you can submit it to journals so others can use your new insight. The number one thing I can recommend for research is to make sure you have a good P.I (principal investigator). Look them up on google scholars and make sure they are publishing a lot per year.

If you have any other questions ask. The process really isn't that hard it's just a lot of hoops you have to jump through.

>>9863428
Not a bad plan at all as a NP you have some decent autonomy too. It's fairly similar to being in family medicine.

That being said if you don't mind debt (I fucking hate it and I'm coming from a decently well off background (family income roughly around 200k) you could just go md route. I'm going to be 320k in debt after med school. It's mind-boggling to say the least. It does force me to not consider some less well-paying specialties and altruistic life plans but in the grand scheme of a life in medicine, it should be fairly manageable. (at least thats what i tell myself)

Nursing is a pretty comfy gig tho you work long shifts but have lots of days off. I would go nursising anthesist personally though

I believe an RN with the highest pay makes around 75k whereas NPs make about 10k more, more or less depending on which unit you're in and not including overtime. Point being, it's not that much more money. They also have to take 2 years of school, which means you will lose out 2 years of income. In the long run, it will not really result in more money. But I could be wrong. Do your research and make sure you do the math before you decide if it's worth it.

However, keep in mind that becoming an NP might be worth it for the other benefits. It's not just about money. NPs get more autonomy and decision-making power. They also don't do nasty work. You get to feel a little bit closer to a physician in terms of prestige. And with a master's, you have the choice of teaching.

I come from a rich family and they're paying for my education so I don't give a fuck about money. I plan on working as an RN only grudgingly. I'm going to do it for the experience and then eventually do a master's. If I can become a professor for something like pathophysiology or pharmacology, I will be happy.

>And you may have chose the wrong uni if your science is dumbed down to a "nurse level". My uni had us take a biochemistry course, microbio/immunology and then 2 A&P courses that were shared with the med students.

Which university do you go to?

I'm in an accelerated BScN program. It's for students who already have one degree, so they can get their BScN quickly by skipping some courses. I did Biology before this and so I took the "real" biochemistry, microbiology, virology, immunology etc. courses and I can tell you that the nursing versions of these courses are definitely dumbed down. Shit, we had like one slide on the four types of hypersensitivity. I'd love it if any med students here could chime in to describe how many hours and hours they spent learning about hypersensitivity.

The only course I really enjoyed so far was pharmacology. I was wondering why it was so interesting. Then I realized that it's because the professor for this particular course was not an RN. He's in the chemistry department. He wasn't even teaching us what we needed to know to do the NCLEX. He was just going by what he found interesting and teaching us the real chemistry.

A uni in Canada where the pre-requisites for nursing school is an associate's degree in science. We needed organic chem, calc, and preferably biology courses.
I needed to do a year of physics before I went full-steam into the nursing courses since physics is my weak point. I actually just found out the biochem class wasn't a requirement for all the nurses, just some students who're out-of-province. The biochem class wasn't a "for nurses" and was handled by the chemistry department.
We did have to take pharmacology for nurses, and it was horribly simplified. It was taught by a nurse, so you lucked out with your course. Anything that went into the molecular basis of drugs and such was just "read the book if you want. We're not going over that". Luckily the biochem class went over everything.

Tuesday there was no major change even after icing the ear and using the cipro as prescribed.

Wednesday I woke up to BOTH ears swollen shut, I went to a different doctor this time. And they diagnosed some type of ear infection (they took culture sameples to send off). This doctor believes the swelling is a result of the ear infection and there is no TMJ. They prescribed an oral antibiotic (cephalexin) and to continue with ice and inuprofen.

The data gets screwy when you look at it globally or across different locations.
For example, in the US a Caucasian person may be more likely to partake in alcohol than an Asian person and less likely than someone of Hispanic Origin. However, that data changes drastically from location to location. In Europe, pretty much the inverse is true, and in some countries, whereas America has a nice 51% rate of who consumes alcohol, other countries may have a population that dominantly partakes in Alcohol or very sparsely does at all.

Plus, IQ in terms of being used to measure intelligence and relating it to alcoholic consumption has really odd implications of itself. People of both higher and lower IQ are more likely to drink than average IQ.

In the end, all that can be concluded is that the data is fucked, and that’s probably because not much effort is put into it. There’s most likely no correlation between race and alcohol consumption that isn’t tied to region. I’d say region and cultural values are the biggest factors, and race is probably negligible.

I want to fucking kill myself, need some help.
14 days ago I had a serous otitis with a whistle in both ears.

After I took all the medication, yesterday I went to the doctor, he took a look and was all good, but the whistle was still there.
To make sure, I had an audition test to see if I was losing hearing, but everything went perfect.

The problem is that the fucking whistle is still there.
the only time I did not had them was yesterday when I woke up for an hour and today the same but for a few minutes.

When I swallow, I can feel a kind of annoying pressure change in my ears, which is what the doctor told me that maybe was the cause and he recommended me to chew gum.

He told me that if in 15 days the whistle still there they were going to look at it deeper.

I want to know if this is normal and it will go away or I should just kill myself because its a fucking nightmare. Someone helpme please.

I ask because I plan on going to community college first then transferring to university, since I'm many years out of high school already and I'm wondering if I should be chasing down some kind of research opportunities during my community college years to try to keep par.

I'm an EMT/soon-to-be paramedic btw so hopefully that is good for something as well.

i dont know if this is the right place to post this, but i think i need medical help. should i go to a doctor? i recently picked up a bag of seasoned sunflower seeds. the only have seasoning on the outside so i cant resist eating the shells. everyone tells me not to eat them but now i know why. i ate all the seeds yesterday (i bought them 2 days ago and started eating that day, its a big bag so i finished the day after) and today when i went to poop i could really feel them grinding against my asshole. they were barely digested and the crushed fragments of the seeds were still sharp. its for that reason that i think this could have caused internal bleeding. yesterday i felt a sharp pain in my stomach area and here we are now.i figured this was the closest thing to a doctor i could get right now.

Go take a shit, tell us the colour of the poop and see if there’s any obvious signs of blood.
Any stomach cramping? Knife-like pains? Eating almond seed shells like that can do a number on your appendix if you still have it, which can lead to intense cramping and eventually induced appendicitis and rupture.

If there’s both cramping and either jet-black shit or obvious bleeding, take some ibuprofen and drive yourself to a doctor before it’s too late.

Hahahahahahahaha, yeah you definitely needed the /med/ general.
First off, no, you aren’t gonna fuckin die.
Second off, yeah, jet-black shits mean you’ve got internal bleeding.
Appendicitis is just general illness of the appendix, a little unnecessary bodypart unless you’re eating grass that just kinda hangs off of your large intestine.

Advil is indeed ibuprofen. Take one or two Advil, and just hit up the doctors. Tell him you’re having trouble pooping, minor abdominal pain, and black feces. Then tell him what you did in terms of eating all of those sunflower seeds.
He’ll probs put you on some pills, maybe at worst shove an instrument up your ass and recommend some sort of procedure. Just make sure your insurance is in order and you’ll be good to go.

Oh, and it sounds like you don’t have appendicitis. Honestly, I’d advise going to the doctor as soon as possible, but it isn’t going to kill you to wait until the next morning or so. Just don’t delay it too long, because you are technically losing a little bit of blood.
(And pardon my response delay, I was busy shitposting on another board.)

>> No.9869413

Walk it off as in it’ll just go away on its own?
I’d advise against it, because we don’t actually know exactly what or where you are bleeding, we just know it’s on the inside of you. Just hit up a doctor. If you’re a minor or living with friends/family, just tell them you need to go to the urgent care/clinic because your poop is black and it’s not normal, or drive yourself if possible.

The worst?
Uhhhhh, maybe a puncture in some lining of the intestines or stomach, maybe you induced an ulcer or hernia or something? That’s really like the absolute worst that could’ve happened, and it isn’t even all that bad. That’s all stuff that can be easily fixed with the right procedures.

The very very worst result from your point of view is if the doc says, “Yup, you need surgery.” In that case, you’ll probably have to go in for a procedure on a scheduled day and they’ll either put you to sleep or numb your bum and operate on you, putting utensils and cameras on long sticks up your asshole. (Which although is definitely not pleasant, isn’t that bad either.)

After that, you’ll probably have to take an antibiotic to prevent infection and a pill for pain, and have some sort of stitches shoved way up your butt that’ll fall out like a week later while you’re shitting.

Honestly, there’s no need to panic. Sleep comfy tonight anon, and be ready to maybe have the doctor look at your butthole if necessary.

Dude, the appendix isn't useless, it plays a big role in local immunity of the colon. Also why the hell are you advicing pain killers? He takes these, pain goes away and the clinical picture gets foggy. Only spasmolitics are allowed for abdominal pain until it gets a diagnosis. Also how the hell did you know he has internal bleeding without even seeing his poop? Melena is very different from regular poop.

I get that the appendix isn’t useless, I almost died having my own rupture and ended up with permanent damage from the waist-down. However, it was clear that the anon didn’t exactly know his stuff and the most important thing was to help him stay calm and get himself to a hospital within reasonable timing.

Yes, I oversimplified things and did nothing near a formal job. Had I been at work and he was in my office, I would’ve actually looked at things more formally, but from here, all I can tell is it’s a guy that ate something he shouldn’t have and it’s fucking up something on the inside. I prepared him mentally in the simplest manner possible for what may go down tomorrow, and only recommended Advil so he can get some rest because he did report pain. If he does go in tomorrow morning, it shouldn’t fuck with the results as long as he tells them he took it (and it’s procedure for them to ask). Getting him help and keeping him calm are the most important aspects.
Tomorrow is when he’ll actually get what he needs. Who knows, maybe they’ll just give him a laxative and tell him to drink water and send him his way. They’ll know more in one visit tomorrow than you and I could probably ever figure out over days of conversation.

Yes, it is very worth it if you can handle the weird shit that comes with it. Rigorous schooling, handling blood and nervous patients, etc.
It pays well and gets you some decent respect though, and a lot of the jobs have pretty nice perks like not having to work full weeks or getting work autonomy (aka you actually get to use your own decision making instead of just following commands, like being your own boss).

What matters most isn’t even “should you”, it’s “what should I do?” There’s a lot of various fields within the medical field itself, and they all vary differently in what they do and what their pros and cons are.

Mercuric Iodide is really only toxic if it can get access to mucous membranes or the kidneys. I suppose putting just the right amount to just the right spot on your skin could result in poisoning, but if we’re talking something like an accidental splash of a few drips on your arm, you should be just fine.

Poisoning usually occurs through oral consumption or inhaling a gaseous form of the substance, and will lead to accute renal failure.

Redpill me on (((surgeons))).
Are they real doctors? Or just butchers larping as doctors. I mean obviously technically they are. But I mean more in terms of attitude, philosophy. Do they really look at patients the way other docs do, or is it simply a case of any excuse to start cutting and chopping (and earning lots of shekels for it)?

>> No.9874686

>>9874669
First off, you’re horribly misunderstanding what surgery even is if you think it’s just about cutting people open or pulling out organs. Most surgery is extremely clean and precise.
Surgeons are people. All people are different. I’ve met surgeons that are cold heartless creatures. I’ve met surgeons that genuinely believe in palm reading. I’ve met surgeons that are horribly depressed and unironically want to kill themselves every day. I’ve met surgeons that act like robots in a human’s body.

The red pill isn’t that they’re psychopaths that like to cut people up; they’re people that just do surgical procedures for a living.

Here’s your red pill:
Surgeons work one of the most depressing, disgusting jobs in medicine. They see people die at their fingertips, and they get their hands dirty handling all sorts of bodily fluids and guts. It isn’t that they like to cut people up and watch them die; it’s that they are the front-line grunts that have to do that dirty work. They are real doctors. All surgeons are physicians and must go through the same rigorous training. The difference between a surgeon and a doctor is that a doctor does a lot more computer work and rarely sees the inside of his patient in the same way a surgeon will.
Surgeons aren’t some sort of evil breed of medical worker, they’re an under appreciated rank that needs respect and understanding.

I got 3/3 offers with MMIs and all I can really say is that try and bring in evidence where and when you can. Don't prepare for questions too much, but prepare your experiences so when you get asked a question, you have something to bring up. If you've ever worked in a hospital, you only need one or two good examples which will cover just about every base you can imagine. Like some difficult patients I had working as a phlebotomist gave me the experience of dealing with difficult patients, patient consent, bedside manner, the needs of patients, what a difference you can make in someone's life, the wider role of allied health professionals and so on.

The only real prep that's worth doing, probably, is looking up things like the four pillars of ethics, medical guidelines for your country and certain core values that the med school you're applying to promotes.

So, if you get a question like "what can doctors do to protect the dignity of patients?", bring up any medical guidlnes you know about, how it applies to medical ethics and then an example of where you've seen or been able to apply it yourself, then what you learned from the experience. A big part of one of my MMIs, and the med school I ended up picking was resilience. So a lot of questions were about stress, coping with stress, dealing with other people who are stressed out and stress in the workplace. And every time, I tried to put in personal anecdotes about when I've been stressed out, struggled, having depression/anxiety and shit like that.

>> No.9876238

>Don't prepare for questions too much, but prepare your experiences so when you get asked a question, you have something to bring up.

This is some solid advice, I wish I had reflected on my experiences before going into the MMI. I have been writing an "experience bank" which is just a series of specific/standout events where I demonstrated a particular skill, value or behaviour.

The university I applied to used scenarios with actors to test our emotional intelligence and our ability to express empathy. This really caught me off guard since I spent a lot of time reading generic ethical dilemma A, B, C and medical guidelines.

However, the scenarios made me realise that I lacked the tools to communicate or express my feelings of empathy. My preparation this time around has been working on my com. skills, talking to people, volunteering at facilities and reflecting on emotional experiences to better understand the thoughts and feelings of others.

Couldn't agree more.

Also, there's often no 'right' answer to these MMI ethical scenarios, so a good response IMO considers both extremes (and explains why they're not the best route) to a dilemma and then settles somewhere in the middle.

I had to take a 2 year "break" from school for medical reasons. I have 2 options for finishing undergrad:
Option one is returning to a top 20 school, where it would take 2 semesters and cost about 30k.
Option two is transferring back to an unranked but cheap state school with an awful department for my major, where I could finish my degree in one semester for around 5k.

Do medical schools care about where you got your undergrad from? Will it look like I couldn't hack it if I transfer back to the state school? Honestly I have a lot of reasons I want to transfer back (cheaper, smaller campus is better since I have a mobility issue now, didn't mesh with student culture, advising was terrible).
I have decent stats, but not amazing, most of it is explainable due to the medical issue.

I’m still open to other career possibilities though because I’m still a junior in undergrad and I don’t know what all is out there. I just want a comfy life, but I don’t want to be a doctor. I’d consider being a PA, but I’d love to hear if you guys have any other suggestions on what profession to look into.

>what are MMIs?
Multiple Mini Interviews

Basically a newer format of interviews that are set up like OSCEs, or speed-dating. You get the same questions you'd expect out of a traditional panel interview, but with different people. It means you have to time your answers better. But if you get off to a bad start with one interviewer, you can have a fresh start with another.

That's all that education in the modern world has been reduced to. paroting, listening and repating what has been said a thousand times.

If they aren't challenged to teach themselves, they will never turly take it to heart and actually KNOW what they've been tought.

>Sci·ence
/ˈsīəns/
noun
The intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.

Medicine fits the literal definition of science, and is probably more of a real science than whatever fucking autistic study you’re following.
Furthermore, we actually use our science to better the common man, not make incomplete theorems that don’t benefit anyone for shit. Most science can’t even do that.

Eyo my dudes, i've got my exam to enter medschool this december. Is there anything in particular which is vital to be accepted?
Other than that, i've got a pretty crappy Chemistry base to stand on.
Any of you can recommend any books on chemistry and Biology?
Aside from that once you get into the career, what is the most difficult subject in 1st year so i can start reading up on it.
Thank you

Chemistry major here. Everything was going great until I semi-botched Diff Eqs. in senior year and I took an overall GPA drop from 3.65 to 3.58 squarely in the BCPM. How fucked am I? I have a 520 MCAT, but it's a retake, and I'm applying to mostly 3.7-3.9 median schools.

what was your original score on mcat? I'm pretty confident you'll get in places but it'll probably be more low tier md schools. I would just apply through a range of schools if you can afford it

I want to go into medicine, but had to take 3 years off from uni because of a brain tumor. I'm 26 and only mid-way into my bachelor's degree. My GPA is good, but I still need to knock off a couple pre-requisites and write the MCAT. Is there hope for "older" students like me? I'll probably only apply for med school when I'm in my early-mid 30s. It then takes another 7+ years of fellowships and shit, no?

>> No.9881283

>>9881273
I know people that started med school in their 40s, so late 20s or even mid-30s isn't so bad. But the one thing I'd say is that you have to really want it, because you're resetting your career at that point and the losses you'll incur from med school won't be made up for quite a few years.

I wouldn't say I'm totally resetting my career. I'm in a biochem major and planned to go into medicine for a while.
But thanks anon. I'll keep at it and hope I can start applying in the next 2-3 years.

I got these things called “nodules” in my ling, like a lot of them. Some are referred to as “adjacent satellite nodules” and there’s one that’s like 1.35 cm in there. Basically just found out my lung is filled with these things. I go to a specialist (plumologist or whatever it’s called) in a couple of weeks. I can’t really find straight answers on Google, but you guys are smart, I’d assume. What are the chances these are cancerous tumors, or are nodules a nicer term for tumor? Doctors wouldn’t tell me much.

I would find it personally frustrating so chose Psych instead, which is more related to cognition and behavior, which was my main interest anyways.

Do better. You'll be fine. Get to and stay above a 3.3 gpa and find a professor who will let you get research experience with them, and you'll be fine for top 25/50 unis for grad school.
