Quaternions are plenty useful without converting them to euler angles.The conversion won't gimbal lock if you convert to Quaternion before doing any operation.

This actually confused me when introduced to linear algebra and higher levels of calculus. I had a hard time differentiating between the 3d plane and 3d directions, and this caused a lot of issues axiometrically, so to speak.

i-j-k notation is useful for engineers who have to do a change of basis in 3-space often enough to warrant the extra letters. Some Dynamics problems I solved involved 3 set of units vectors.

It has no reason to be a thing for general math, though, and yes, it can make things confusing later on as you realize choice of basis vectors is just done to make things convenient.
